I like the second shot better than the first. For me, what makes both of them is the subtle lighting, the coloration of the water. In this respect the first has a slight edge, but both are super. The surfer is a necessary added element, but the water texture and color is what makes them.

Thanks AlexG, I'm quite happy with the exposure logic in K10D, it seems to get things right most of the time. In these shots I think the low position of the sun helped a good lot too. Come to think of it, that's probably why there's so much nice colour in the water in the first shot too...
