Actually, you have. It's called a return because they keep returning
to take more of your hard-earned money. :-)

It is money people lend the government with no interest. In the US we
have a federal income tax that is collected with payroll withholding by

That's the assumption that makes it all a farce. None of it is the

Wrong.

I understand the reason for taxation. I believe it's a necessary evil.
What really gets my goat is the fact that:
a) The government encourages people to save for the future so the
social security system wont collapse in a heap when the baby boomers
all retire start drawing their pension. But
I calculated what the interest on my money would have been
considering if I'd put the entire amount that the government owes me
back into the highest return financial instrument I have available to
me for an entire year ... it comes to $21.
I guess for some people, that $21 is a make or
Your government does,. maybe. However that's not the theory behind
ours. Practice has gotten very out of step with theory.

Frankly, I blame the list. ;-) We had just discussed the 50-200. I had asked
about it and got replies
Bah,

Since April 15th falls on a Sunday (today), tax returns would normally be
due on Monday. But Monday is a holiday in Washington D.C., which makes it a
'national holiday' - meaning tax returns are due on Tuesday, April 17th (or
file the Automatic Extension of Time to file Form 4868).
The list giveth. The list taketh away.
So ends the lesson for today.

I try to let them hold as little of my money as possible, but I
always over-pay during the year by a little bit to make sure I don't
have to come up with more cash at tax day. Takes the bite out of it
