This is not a reliable indicator of fitness. The proper approach is to
conduct rigorous head-to-head trials:

Thanks, Darren.
I really don't see how I could go wrong at $50 -- unless they're such
crappy lenses that I can never find a decent use for them.
I still need to suss out some details on them, and will report back with
my findings ASAP.

I can't tell for sure from your original post, but if it did not SAY a
lens mount in the original post, it is quite possible that you will
find it is a screwmount camera/lenses. Tomioka made the 55mm f1.4 that
was found on many of those cameras (see:

Well, that and the fact that I have a thing about old, manual-focus

I'm mostly concerned about getting one jammed on a body and going into
hysterics, and secondarily, completely screwing up the lenses in the

OK, so I just picked up these lenses for $50:
Sears 50mm f/2
Sears 135mm f/2.8
Sears 28-85 f/3.5-4.5
Sears 80-200mm f/4
All are PK mounts except for the 28-85, which is the dreaded Ricoh K. I
haven't been able to find my precision screwdriver set, or I'd go ahead
and pop out the pin.

Indeed. However there is one gotcha - new Tamron 14/2.8 SP lenses go for
above $1000. I am not *that* rich.
I cannot buy K (A) 15/3.5 for the same reason I am selling my Sigma

I have a sigma 12 - 24 and can attest to the fact that at least my
sample is a cracker. Only negative is that it isn't the world's smallest

Hi!
My FAJ 18-35 is a good lens but I want even wider lens. And I want it AF
and even more I want it to be full frame.
It seems to me that my options are (in parentheses is Fred Miranda site
score):
Sigma 15-30/3.5-4.5 (8.5 out of 71 reviews)
Sigma 12-24/4.5-5.6 (8.7 out of 64 reviews)
Tamron
Rick, I have Pentax 17-28... I have learned that there is Sigma 14/2.8
and Tamron 14/2.8 both AF, full frame (Tamron?) rectilinear lenses.
Sigma can be had for $900 new from BJ or Adorama.
Question is how to I make sure that I get a good sample and which one do
I choose?

How do you feel about fisheye? The Pentax 17-28 is a
