Beautiful, beautiful work. One thing though: I didn't get the original post to this. You posted this today, right? or No? Cheers, Christine Don't know why you didn't see the original post. I sent it just after 10PM Thursday (Sydney time) and it came into my mailbox a minute or so later. The original post is also in the archives. A mystery. The Regatta picture took a bit of work. I wanted to shoot late in the day to get the late sun on the face of the bridge. Unfortunately, when I got to the site I realised that the sun was setting too far north (if I'd looked at The Photographer's Ephemeris, I would have known this beforehand). So, Plan B was to combine two images, one exposed for the sky and the other exposed for the bridge. Thankfully I had my tripod with me Thanks for the kind words. OT: Tales from the bike shed
A couple of interesting stories for the PDML Bike SIG: Jon Snow, a well-known TV news anchorman who made his name reporting the Vietnam war, is also the president of the CTC (Cyclists' Touring Club, oldest cycling org in the world). He's had his bike stolen (again!) from outside his office. So it can happen to anyone. He's offering a £1,000 reward for its return. It's a hand-built titanium Condor. http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/uk/wheelie+bad+jon+snow8217s+bike+sto len++again/3709197 What is perhaps more interesting and useful for us mortals is a site called http://bikeshd.co.uk/ which is an aggregator of Bike For Sale notices posted on Gumtree and eBay - a useful place to look if your own bike is nicked. Also, 13th July was the anniversary of the death, from an excess of special go-faster cycling sherbet, of British rider Tom Simpson in 1967's Tour de France. Hello, It just occurred to me it's been way too long time since I showed you any pictures, so here is one: http://www.toralf.net/bilde.php?navn=sollerud6b Nothing more than a snapshot, really, but I must say I'm a bit fascinated by all the cruise ships that visit us every summer. Perhaps especially the ones among them that has a bit of history. This one is apparently the last ocean liner that was built for Den Norske Amerikalinje (The Norwegian America Line) - so some time early in the seventies, you might have seen it at exactly the same spot on it's way to New York as part of the regular transatlantic passenger service. Although the company was probably about to give up that business at the time this ship was delivered, to focus on cruises instead. Re: PESO: Lake Edith, Jasper National Park
Having been there myself, I have only one basic observation that is not meant to be a critique or negative... e.g. don't feel bad because of what I write. OK? Here goes. The image, in any tone, color, sepia, gray-scale, does not capture the ambience and natural beauty that fills that area. IMO, it is way too wide an angle of a shot. The mountains are beautiful and the water is beautiful in that place. I haven't looked at anything but the original offering. There is too much water, too little mountains, and the colors are lost. and that's what adds so much beauty to the Canadian Rockies. If you live near there, go back often. :-) Tom C. This is my favourite photograph to take, and I want to get better at it. What do you think? -- Michael Hamilton Could we compare it to the unphotoshopped version? Okay, here are a couple more to compare: http://www.michaelhamilton.ca/images/MHlakeedith2.jpg (better sky colour, less sepia, adjusted horizon angle) http://www.michaelhamilton.ca/images/MHlakeedithorig.jpg (original, slight boost in blues, sharpening, etc) Thanks for your suggestions and comments so far! I've made a few improvements that I like already. Well, I think the original is preferable. There's some detail in the treeline whereas in the other versions, the treeline is pretty much a dark, elongated blob. I'm not all that keen on sepia so I may be a bit prejudiced in commenting, but if you like that sort of treatment, trying to bring out a bit more detail in the sky of your first post would improve it, I think.
