GESO: Leopard

In 37 years we must have spent about 400 days in Kruger yet have only had 7

see Leopards almost every time they visit the Park. These are not the
greatest of images but they are proof that we spotted a Leopard in the late

Pentax unit was much much faster than the last unit for AF, about on
par with any of my other lenses but much quieter. The Sigma was $100
more and offered a 7 year warranty and f2.8 at the wide open end, and
AF was faster than the Pentax but i decided to go with the Pentax. The
sharpness looked a bit nicer, is lighter and the focus ring moves the
correct way. LOL

I tested the 17-70 on my K-5. It was a *little* slower but I don't think
that I would have noticed if I had not been counting. The one thing I
noticed if that if the camera failed to achieve a focus lock and then I
tried to focus on a new subject, it took 1 to maybe 1.5 seconds to get a
lock. What I mean is - if I pointed it at a plain white wall the camera
often would not lock at all and just stop hunting after a short while. If I
then switched to a subject with high contrast elements it would take a
second or so to focus - longer than if I manual defocused the lens before
 testing.

I tried the lens on the K-01 and it consistently took about 2 seconds to
focus - no delay in the lens starting to search for the focus point, but it
moved slowly and generally took a couple of seconds to lock in.

Just for fun I tried it on a K-10d and it routinely took 1-3 seconds to get
a lock, but it was surely the body's fault. The lens was hunting all the
 time.

It was interesting to compare the K-3, K-5 K-10 and K-01. Without a doubt
the K-3 blew all of the others away and I don't recall any shots when the
camera indicated the shot was in focus when it was not. I had a few issues
with the K-5 and many with the K-10. The K-01 was very accurate but very
 slow.

Hopefully the new lens will fix the problem you experienced.

I know the AF of Canon and Nikon are quite fast leaving us Pentaxians

2-3 seconds to lock on and focus on a static object.?? Me thinks
 that's a bit to slow.
The salesman and i played with it for 10-15 minutes. It did get a tad
faster to focus but it was still painfully slow. I know it will not be
as snappy as my Nikon 70-200 f2,9 VR lens, you can barely hear
anything and it locks on faster than Mike Johnson deleting a cat
 photo.

So, am i missing something with this SDM system. Is it painfully slow
or should it be as fast or faster to AF on a subject as the screw
focus lenses. Do i need to adjust a menu setting or something.

Another is on order for Saturday

Re: Pentax 17-70 f4 and SDM motor question

2014-03-22 Thread Rob Studdert
I bought the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 a week ago when my Sigma 17-50/2.8 was
in for repair, I quite like it. It's pretty sharp, if it's not looking
great consider checking that it's actually focused, it may need some
focus adjustment.

more and offered a 7 year warranty and f2.8 at the wide open end, and
AF was faster than the Pentax but i decided to go with the Pentax. The
sharpness looked a bit nicer, is lighter and the focus ring moves the
 correct way.

 Hi all

I went to pick up above mentioned lens this afternoon. loks and feel

I know the AF of Canon and Nikon are quite fast leaving us Pentaxians
hunting and pecking our way through landscapes and soccer photos, BUT,
2-3 seconds to lock on and focus on a static object.?? Me thinks
 that's a bit to slow.

Photos of the town that never was

2014-03-22 Thread Igor Roshchin

I suspect quite a few PDMLers would appreciate this collection:
http://themetapicture.com/photographing-a-town-that-never-was/

This echoed in my mind with the photos of the vintage cars I've seen
from Paul.

There are more pictures in his Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24796741@N05/page1/

Among those are a few interesting collections:
Mary Janes:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24796741@N05/sets/72157604251470791/

And in this one, recreating the past collection, he an interesting
description (under more):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24796741@N05/sets/72157604253082581/
I had been collecting 20th century memorabilia for a number of years
and felt I had to do something creative with it, instead of just having
it packed in boxes.
In the late 1980's I had the grand idea of recreating the 1950's through
a series of staged photographs.
Over a period of years, rooms were redecorated, vintage cars were found,
authentic food was prepared and friends came over to dress up.
Here are some of the results.
Not being satisfied with just the photos, I eventually put together a
series of fake photo albums, a fictitious personal diary and souvenirs
from imaginary trips. All of this was placed in trunk and
put aside so someone would eventually find it.
Is it unfair to have people think that what they found is real?
Hm. Good question.

Cheers,

Igor
