Speaking of exhibitions...

2014-12-29 Thread Richard Womer
My wife and I went to the Paul Strand exhibition at the Philly Art
Museum yesterday. It is excellent: all phases of his career (most of
which I was unaware of) are well represented, including a few motion
pictures.

If you are in striking distance of Philly, make a trip. It runs through Sunday.

GESO: Hydnora Africa

2014-12-29 Thread Alan C
Now here's something unusual for you. These are shots of a root parasite,
Hydnora Africana, which flowers every year in the rainy season. The usual
host is a member of the Euphorbia family but this one is oddly parasitizing
an Acacia (Knoppiesdoring). The pollinating agents are dungbeetles as shown
in the last shot. It was a grey day so I used a 500W halogen for
illumination.

Been chilling (pun intended) in Calais all afternoon until the light was
gone, playing around with the K-3 and the HD DA 55-300 mm. Thought you
might like this one of ferry MFL Berlioz leaving Calais for Dover,

PESO Gandalf the test victim

2014-12-29 Thread Bruce Walker
Santa was especially good to me and delivered five boxes of Paul C
Buff gear on Dec 24. I've been unpacking and reading manuals since
then and am _finally_ lighting things up to test it all out.

Here's my go-to model, Gandalf the Russian Blue kitty. I just have to
run the brush over him a few times and tell him what a handsome feller
he is, and bingo ...

The raspberries came from a friend's garden, freshly picked this morning.
They're about the best I've ever tasted. I'd prefer to keep the kiwifruit
slices whole but it's easier to slice the pav if I cut them into smaller pieces.

Right, time to get out and enjoy the sun. We've finally come across some nice
