I have a lot of trouble focusing using the little TV screen on the back
with most point 'n shoots and mirrorless systems, but his Olympus has a
very nice EVF that zooms tilts up so you can look down into it if
you're shooting macro close to the ground. Reminiscent of the LX sports
 finder.

The little TV screen on the back also tilts is a touch-screen if you
 prefer to use that.

 In-body image stabilization.

The real downside is I think the body is expensive, $1299 at BH. That's
a lot of money for a camera that's going to require me to get all new
lenses, although there may be an adapter from Novoflex for Pentax-K, but
I had trouble navigating their site, so I didn't even try to find out
 about older Canon lenses.

The E-M1 is the top of the range - there are less-expensive OM-Ds that are
just as capable as any enthusiast DSLR. You can get adapters for pretty much
any legacy lens and the cheap E-Bay ones work just fine. Not that I'm trying
to move anyone away from Pentax but mirrorless is the future (in my opinion
only, for what that's worth) and Ricoh needs to get competitive in that
 market.

 Cheers

 Brian

If I was starting out NEW with no legacy glass, I'd give the Olympus
 serious consideration.

I don't think a DSLR is warranted at this point unless somebody
specifically wants a DSLR (and has some good idea why).

(I wouldn't recommend Pentax Q. - That's more of an anthusiast toy, not
 the main camera.)

Alternatively, if interchangeable lenses are not a must, I'd suggest
something like Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7 with a fast (1.4 or 1.7) lens
 and plenty of controls.
There are similar cameras from 3-4 other makers, including Canon, but
I like advanced PS from Panasonic, so, I don't recall other models at
 the moment.

GESO -- Battle Royal

2015-05-20 Thread P.J. Alling
Driving along CT RT 146, I saw this Great Egret hunting in a marsh, I
didn't have rhe right lens combination but I did have the Vivitar S1
70-210mm f2.8~4.0 with me and the F 1.7X AF adapter. I had just shot a
couple of test shots to get get the exposure in the ball park when this
happened. This combination really seems to front focus a lot on with
the K-5II so technically these shots aren't the the best technically,
but I hope the content makes up for it.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1604247/PESO/BattleRoyal/index.html

Equipment: Pentax K-5II w/vmc Vivitar Series 1 70-210mm f2.8~4.0
(Komine) and smc Pentax FA 1.7x AF Adapter.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

Nice shot with fabulous colors. The tone mapping in the flickr shot
doesn't bother me at all, but is a little more pronounced in the google
+ version. Interesting difference regarding google+ and flickr
presentations...

I noticed that Google+ optimizes the photos, which resulted in blown
out areas in the sky that you should not see on the Flickr version.
Interested in knowing if that looks overcooked to you. It's not HDR,
but it is post-processed.

I shot it in vertical also, so I'll see if I can do one of those for comparison.

Comments -I like your capture, composition and subject very much.

Criticism - I'd like it more with a tad more space to the bottom edge and by

With apologies to Andrew Wyeth, but this just reminded me of an
automotive version of his Christina's World. Taken with a Pentax K-3
and Sigma EX 10-20mm f4-5.6 in the back forty on an abandoned
farmstead in northwest Kansas. I believe that this paint color in 1959
was called Frost Blue Poly but I like how its hue is repeated in the
sky. https://goo.gl/TQ1oU1

Re: OT - sham cancer charities

2015-05-20 Thread Ken Waller

If it is not listed on Charity Navigator, I do not trust the charity.

Well, I'm involved with the Fallen and Wounded Soldiers Fund - a Michigan
based operation that is totally run by volunteers - there are no salaries
paid - ZERO. Last year almost a half a million dollars was given to needy
Michigan vets. Around 96% of all monies raised are given to needy vets and
their families. The rest is used for promotional services.

Its not recognized by the Charity Navigator Website !

important financial and performance details about major charities. If
