GESO/VESO 2016 - 105-117 - GDG

2016-06-25 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Took my Saturday morning walk after a bit of a rough week. Two of the 13 photos
I made ...

  https://flic.kr/p/Jn4xWu
  https://flic.kr/p/Jn4yP1

I couldn't get Louden Wainwright III's "Song in C" out of my head all morning,
so I put the whole set into a video with that as sound track. From YouTube ...
It runs six minutes:

  https://youtu.be/_q_e9UNVWCQ

Enjoy!

It *might* be a little weak in the corners wide open, but not so much
that lightroom can't correct. Besides, when I'm shooting macros, the
edges are so out of focus I don't notice a fuzzy bit more.

Even the 28-105 and 15-30 vignette a bit in the corners.

053 through 159 are with the 35. but I guess you wouldn't notice any
weakness in the corners with it on those.

It was fun, I decided that none of my lenses suck on the K-1. The only real
issue I had with the DA-35 macro was that if I pull the sunshade all of the
way out, it'll block the angle of view a bit. So, I'm very happy, this means
the DA35 makes a totally suitable walkabout lens on the K-1.

Most of the set are pretty generic chiaroscuro-ish flower shots, but I
rather quite like this one:

even better. K-1, Tamron 90/2.8 ISO 100 f/2.8 1/60 slightly cropped to
recompose the stamen/pistil from the center.

Re: GESO: Swan Lake (Lagoon?)

2016-06-25 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Nice images, Nicole.

was that really a lagoon? South Jersey in general, and Ca[e May Point in
particular, are over-run with mute swans. They are displacing native
species, and that causes great concerns, as Cape May is a birding hot spot.

I have seen swans in Lake Lilly and Lighthouse Lake, but never that many.

Good work in any event.

PESO: Nike of Epheses

2016-06-25 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
One of the many treasures of Ephesus is this relief carving of Nike, the
winged goddess victory. She holds a wreath of laurel leaves, an emblem of
victory, in her left hand, and a stalk of wheat in her right hand and is
shown flying. This work dates from the Roman period, and was discovered
among the ruins on the Square of Domitian.

K-1 mounting plate arrived

2016-06-25 Thread Stanley Halpin
For those of you who use the Swiss-Acra standard camera and lens plates …

Kirk had plates for the K-1 available on pre-order shortly after the K-1 was
announced this spring. I put my name on their list about the same time I
pre-ordered the K-1. Said plate arrived today and, as expected, fits perfectly.
Kirk does good work. $55.

In the interim I have repurposed an old Kirk plate that was originally on the
K-10 IIRC. It took quite a bit of filing and grinding to make it fit but it was
ok. Free to a good home (you pay postage) if anybody wants it. Disadvantages
compared to a new custom fit are: a) visible file marks etc, b) no slot for
attaching a camera strap and c) no provision for adding a safety-stop screw.
But it provides a secure mounting platform for your camera.

Har! What are you going to do? Hide it in the garage for the first six
months so that when your significant other finally sees it and asks "Is
that another new lens?", you can honestly answer "No, I've had it for
months" ???

Had a friend who used to do that whenever he wanted to buy a new guitar.

He got to keep most of them after the divorce.

I posted the videos to facebook, which mangled them worse than they do

It was actually a lot clearer on my computer before posting. I should
have also leaned a bit harder on the ISO.

TL;DW when it comes to features and UI for video, the K-1 may suck,
but the sensor is amazing, abso-f-lutely amazing.

Facebook is a perfect example of what happens when software grows up
without adult supervision.

I think that calling it software gives it far too much credit.

There's an old joke comparing Windows 95 to various types of software,
and depending on how vicious, you feel at the time, the conclusion is
either Win95 is a bug or a virus. Facebook makes me long for the days...

With UKIP so prominently featured in Brexit, I've pondered the same. But
absolutism isn't right-wing only. The opposition against EU in my country for
example, is mostly leftist.
