It's nice, but I think it would be improved by cropping the upper and
left off a bit so that the top of the circle and left basket were just
in the frame, also possibly pulling down the highlight slider a skosh.

YMMV, just my opinion and all that nonsense.

The first thing I found with the K1 is the rear button layout is
simpler, less chance of hitting the wrong button, particularly
accidentally going into Live View Mode as happens with my K5.

If your camera is meeting your needs, no matter what it is, you should
feel no pressure to upgrade. However, anybody with a Pentax body older
than a K-5, with the ability to upgrade, should at least consider
borrowing one for a short while to see if the improved performance might
help them in unexpected ways.

I think that the button layout on the K-1 is the best yet. I rarely
find myself hitting the wrong button by mistake. I've got a couple of

I went to the K20 from the K100, and there wasn't a lot about the 20
sensor that I liked better than the K100 sensor. I did quite like the
ergonomics and feel of it. For studio work it was a very nice body.
Although, once I got the K-x, which had the worst feel in my hands of
any of my Pentax DSLRs, I pretty much stopped using the K20 for anything
but studio work because the K-x sensor was so much better in anything
but the best light.

Heh, funny how it goes. My K20D/K100D experience is almost the exact
opposite to yours. The K100D sensor is so bad at low light I almost
swooned when I used the K20D in the same venues. I put the K100D away
and never shot with it again.

The K20D was just so refined and a huge upgrade in every single way
from the K100D Super. I found there was no comparison at all between
the K20D's sensor and the K100D.

I gave my K100D to an impoverished model whose mother had some Pentax
lenses, so it's getting some use at least.

I dunno. I came to the K-3 from the K20D. Then I came to the 645Z from
the K-3. Yet I still shoot the K20D from time to time and when I do I
appreciate both its ergonomics and image quality[*]. Nobody with a
K20D should feel pressure to upgrade if it's meeting their needs.

A day with the Coyle's

2016-11-12 Thread Larry Colen

AKA "A sheila and two Johns".

John Francis and I had a fun day hanging out with the Coyle's. On our
way North from SSF, we stopped by the wave organ in the Marina in SF,
made an attempt at Muir woods, but it was so crowded we punted on that.
At lunch in Stinson Beach we got a show that put Benihana to shame,
somewhere around Pt Reyes, we headed East to 101 in the hopes we'd find
redwoods for Jan driving over the ridge. John C was feeling a bit off,
so just finished the day as a two marina, three bridge tour, with a stop
at the Berkeley marina to see SF from the East Bay, then up University,
to Telegraph and Ashby to give them a quick view of the People's
Republic of Berkeley. (The difference between Berkeley and Moscow?
There are still communists in Berkeley).

Here's a bit fluff from the day. The weather wasn't really cooperating
in terms of good light for photos.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157676380966976

I converted this to B in homage to Marco:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/30904589786/in/album-72157676380966976/

We didn't quite get to the fine arts museum, so here's Jan's tribute to
"The Thinker" which was five miles away:

Any suggestions for improvements of the photos are always welcome.

Not a PESO -- Gillette's Castle

2016-11-12 Thread P.J. Alling
Some people commented that my PESO of Gillette's Castle was should have
been taken at a different angle, which I did but I intended it for the
PUG, and didn't want to post it as a PESO first. There were a couple of
things that annoyed me about that image after the PUG was published, so
I decided to correct the one that bugged me the most and re-post it as a
sort of PESO. So here it is again.

https://pdml.updog.co/webster26/PUGish/gillettescastle.html

The usual disclaimers apply. Equipment information can be obtained by
hovering your mouse pointer over the image.

Well, you said you were going to get one when we met up in Hobart. I'm
sure you'll enjoy it but I fear it would be too heavy for me. I'm even
finding the K-5 a bit more than I want to carry around. Now, if Ricoh
would produce a nice, lightweight mirrorless

Cheers

Caveman here, still occasionally uses an *ist D.

the Middle East' in which 'mr. modi came out tops'. i guess it speaks for
itself...

That is a lovely shot! The lighting, composition, and DOF work very
well together.

Wouldn't have taken as long as it did if it hadn't been a holiday. I could

I just didn't want to wait three days until Monday to get a tetanus shot (if
I had needed it).

And unlike PJ's LX, it will heal in time.

Very wise getting it sorted there and then.

As for PJ's camera, of all the cameras to drop, an LXouch!
