If you use an eraser be extremely careful not to get any bits of the abrasive
eraser material in the camera. Whatever method you use, you should of course

Re: More news of trouble at Ricoh

2017-06-20 Thread Alex Sarbu
"When in panic or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout" ;-)

Please ignore the alarmist Nikkei article - FTR Ricoh had to
officially deny 2 such "news", the one about closing down the camera
business (denied) and one about selling the leasing and semiconductor
businesses (not sure it means they won't sell those, or they didn't
decide if to sell or not).

Information can be found directly on Ricoh's site:
http://www.ricoh.com/IR/data/pre/pdf/h29q4_qa.pdf
http://www.ricoh.com/IR/pdf/presentation_text_2017.pdf

So, things are not rosy mostly due to their core copier business, and
they're reacting to prevent making a loss in FY2019. Ricoh Imaging
isn't doing that bad with the Theta and K-1.

Have fun,
Alex

Re: Q7 and macro

2017-06-20 Thread Jostein
I've tried the Q7 some more for stacks now, and noise doesn't seem to be
a problem at ISO 100. That's one of the pros.

Another pro is what I observed to begin with, that at the extreme end of
magnification, certainly at 10X, the low vibration and high pixel
density makes it possible to produce very detailed images. With the
extreme crop, however, it also means that one needs several stacks to
cover the surface of even a small subject, and then mount them like a
mosaic to a complete picture afterwards. Lots of work, but it's nice to
know that a method is workable for those smallest of critters when
vibration becomes a showstopper with SLR-style cameras.

A big con is that whatever chromatic aberrations are present in the
optics are spread over more pixels when pixel density is higher.

For more conventional macro stuff, I can only speculate yet. I suspect
there is a sweet spot in the tradeoffs between magnification, DOF and
focus range that justifies its use.

I was tempted to abandon the Q system but my Q lenses would not fetch
much on the market and Q7's seem to be pretty affordable. And it is a
fun system.

At any given magnification it naturally produces a much tighter crop,
but the amount of detail preserved per surface area of critter is a
lot better than in images produced with eg. the K-3 and the same
optics. The tightly packed pixels of the small sensor is a good thing
from this perspective.

Vibration issues are, as expected, virtually nonexistent.

Am optimistic about this now. :-)

Re: More news of trouble at Ricoh

2017-06-20 Thread Igor PDML-StR

On the page that Gonz posted:
https://www.dpreview.com/news/3586946955/ricoh-announced-cost-cuts-in-order-to-survive
look for the comment by Mistral75, where that user posts operating
profits.

Other (includes, but is not limited to, Ricoh Imaging): ¥1.4bn (FY2016)
--> ¥(6.1)bn (FY2017, after ¥9.5bn impairment)

It is hard to say what else, besides Pentax os in that category. But
Pentax/Ricoh Imaging might, indeed, has increased the profit in this
category due to the sales of the long-awaited K1. (I am not sure when
their FY starts, it might have started in mid- or late-2016, when K1 was
introduced.)
But that is still probably below the projected profits, according to this
document:

https://www.ricoh.com/release/2017/0411_1.html
But I wouldn't be surprised that the "impairment" (which RonHendriks on
that forum highlight that much) is not a problem, but just the way to

decrease their tax liability and satisfy the formal requirements of the
market (With the announcement).

In any case, if I understand correctly, So far, the talks are about
reducing primarily the sales and services. But then, read the comment on
the same DPreview page by DPPMetro:

"but if you need any kind of repairs or support down the road, you will be
on your own."

In the fall, myself and others found out they shut down the miniscule pro
service, which already had a much higher standard to get into than any
competitor. We found out not by announcement, either. Pro Service is
supposed to come with the 645 anyhow.

Next, they fired all the Pentax people in the US around the same
timeframe, including our contacts.

Then they fired at least 1000 in the US alone when the last report by
Nikkei was made.

And that what might hurt Pentax part.

Yet another thought, - I am not sure if at this stage Pentax is too much
integrated with the rest of Ricoh Imaging, so that it cannot be separated
and sold out without the rest of that division.

Igor

John Tue, 20 Jun 2017 13:19:26 -0700

My read on the situation is Pentax appears to be one of the few bright
spots on Ricoh's balance sheet.

Probably won't save Pentax if the parent company founders, but Pentax
isn't the cause of their troubles.

OT lens cleaning

2017-06-20 Thread David J Brooks
Took my Nikon 70-200 vr f2.8 out for a spin today. The AF worked fine
for a few minutes then for the rest of the day it would stop orking
for a min then work again for a minute. What is the best method to
clean the contacts. I'll try that first before i drive it to their
service department to check out the AF motor.

Re: More news of trouble at Ricoh

2017-06-20 Thread John

My read on the situation is Pentax appears to be one of the few bright
spots on Ricoh's balance sheet.

Probably won't save Pentax if the parent company founders, but Pentax
isn't the cause of their troubles.

On 6/19/2017 17:51, Darren Addy wrote:

This gives more credence to the story that Bipin shared back in April:
http://asia.nikkei.com/Business/Companies/Ricoh-may-close-shutter-on-personal-camera-business

I have to believe that the Pentax division has made a name (and a
larger market for itself) enough that it would be an attractive target
for SOMEONE to purchase, but I **can't believe** that Pentax could be
looking at yet another transitional period.

Now that Pentax is using so many Sony chips, the company that really
makes sense owning Pentax is Sony, IMHO.

We'll have to see how this plays out.

Re: Eroica and drone

2017-06-20 Thread John

The only thing that's observably old in that is the cyclists.

Bob W and I took part in Eroica Britannia - a 55 mile cycle ride where
you have to ride a bike that's at least 30 years old, and dress up in

footage:

We look suitably heroic here - it was early on and a nice flat bit of
old railway turned into a cycle route.

Not quite OT as I was carrying my MX over my shoulder.

Re: GESO - Photo Exhibit

2017-06-20 Thread Mark C
Thanks, Chris! That's exactly the look and tradition I was trying to
evoke. The reception was fun. Lots of good comments and feedback. I was
happy that many people tuned into the less showy images - like the
milkweed seedpod and the vine tendrils.

Now I can finally get back to making more photos.

A great set and I trust the exhibition went well. To me, they're a

Fantastic work Mark.

I have a little photo exhibit opening at the Carnegie Center for the Arts in
nearby Three Rivers, Michigan. It was hung yesterday - nice venue in the
what would have once been the main lobby of an old Carnegie Library. Its a
collection of the plant photos I've been working on lately and is named
"Botanical Studies."

Here's a geso of the images in the show:

And here is the announcement post on my website:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/botanical-studies-exhibit

I've shared many of the images in the past few months, though in most cases
the posted images were not the final print. All of the photos were made
between February and May of this year - kind of a first for me to come up
with a photo project and see it through to a framed set of prints in a fixed
time.

Four other exhibits are opening at the center on the same day - so this
Sunday's reception should be interesting.

jumped on a train and had three unplanned and enjoyable days in
