Beautiful but ominous at the same time.

QUestion for Matt about the lightening shot.. was that a combo of two

My favourites, in no particular order: P.J.'s Ice Storm, Daniel's
Spring
Snow Storm, Paul's Fog (though there's usually either storm or fog),
and

Annsan's City Snow, mainly because we haven't had any decent snow here
in almost a decade.

All the rest are great as well, of course.

I'm only making $6.00 a copy - but since I already bought this copy for $44 it

A bit further along the canal this time:
https://www.robertstech.com/temp/7e400937a.jpg

Background: Yesterday (Wednesday) Lisa and I took a walk along the Tennet &
Avon Canal, from Bath to Bradford-on-Avon. It's around 12 miles from our
hotel in Bath to the center of Bradford-on-Avon and all pretty much dead
flat because it's on the canal tow path. The weather changed constantly from
rain to cloudy to sunny and back. This photo was obviously taken during one
of the sunny spells. Because the walk was so easy we finished in much less
time that we'd planned for (we're used to the arduous terrain of the Pennine
Way, White Mountains, etc.) so we had a pint at a pub in Bradford-on-Avon
and explored the place a little. It's a beautiful little town with lots on
medieval architecture and an old Saxon church. Well worth the trip.

My brother (who lives in Bath) used to have a share in a narrow boat, so
some years ago Jan and I went for a week on the canals with him. We passed
through beautiful countryside, very tranquil when you are meandering along
at 2-3 miles per hour, only to be woken with a jolt when you come to yet
another lock! On our first day we handled (that should be man and
woman-handled) 22 of them...
Great time though, and some excellent food in country pubs just off the
canals.

Hi Stan,

The Bank Holiday is May 4 - they are always on Mondays. Your fears are
justified. You can expect hotels and B to be booked well in advance. The
roads will be jammed, and delayed further by traffic accidents. The railways
will be packed, and delayed by strikes and unseasonal weather of one extreme or
the other. Airlines will be overbooked but it won’t matter because the French
air traffic controllers are on strike (but your airline has gone bust anyway)
and everybody has been camping in the airport for at least a week. That is the
traditional Bank Holiday. The only thing to do is stay at home or cycle or walk
to wherever you want to be. If you want to be in Guernsey then a ferry would
probably get you there and (one day) back again.

If things go to plan for me then by May I will be living somewhere on the South
Coast, most likely in exotic Worthing, planning to buy a small place in France,
and split my time between them. If that happens then a trip to Guernsey would
be great. But since it depends on somebody buying my house pdq I will just have
to wait and see.

Hasta luego,
Bob

Yes, day trips are only viable when the tides are right - and they're
probably not by the sound of it. To get a full day in Guernsey, it might be
necessary to have 2 nights there so you'll have to decide on that basis.
Keep in touch off-list as I'm not here often these days...

Re: PDML meet-up in Britain? Early May...

2020-01-17 Thread Stanley Halpin
Thanks all!

Some variations to our plans that I have thought of, based in part on your
responses:

a. on arrival in Southampton 1 May, instead of heading immediately SW
we could instead head for London environs, overnight, Saturday with Bob &
whoever, then proceed SW later on Saturday 2 May. Unless of course Bob has
moved to Paris or back to Gibraltar or some other exotic locale.

b. We have thought of finding lodging a bit closer to or into Cornwall,
e.g. Tavistock, Gunnislake… Which is the region Meg’s Dad was from. A feasible
day trip from there would be back toward Exeter if Cotty & Alma are in that
neighborhood.

c. Definitely intrigued by Guernsey. I checked ferry schedules from
Poole. Given the timing and the length of the trip, it doesn’t seem feasible to
do a day trip, but maybe an overnight. However I am not seeing any ferries back
from Guernsey mid-day, everything seems to be late afternoon/evening… I’ll do
some more looking and keep this in mind.

I am a bit concerned about early May, Bank Holiday on 8 May, and how that
impacts our plans. I can visualize great masses of urbanites streaming toward
any available green space, zeroing in on all available “charming" B etc. But
at least the powers-that-be had the sense to postpone May 1 for a week so that
any disruption will happen at the end of our travels rather than the beginning!

I will continue planning and booking and will remain flexible on specific until
mid-April.

FS Friday: lightly used KP, KatzEye screen, bonus lens

2020-01-17 Thread Juan Buhler
I am sad to say, I *really* tried to love the KP. I love the image quality,
it's definitely better than some full frame cameras. But I think I am too
deep into mirrorless, and my eyes don't like OVFs anymore.

The shutter was fired 579 times only, so this camera is a good as new. I
installed a KatzEye split image screen in order to focus manual lenses.

Here is the listing:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pentax-KP-24-3MP-DSLR-Lightly-Used-In-Box-Bonus-Lens-Manual-Focusing-Screen/133302216174

As for a PDML discount: contact me privately. Also, if you buy it and are a
list member, I will replace the A50/2 lens with the FA50/1.7.

Thanks,

j

Re: PDML meet-up in Britain? Early May...

2020-01-17 Thread Bob Pdml
I’ve jotted those dates down in my diary. Can’t guarantee anything yet as I
have just put my house back on the market, so the rest of time now depends on
how that plays out.

That’s a beautiful shot, absolutely classic.

Just can't keep you away ;-)

Exeter is one of our possible move-to destinations so we know that part ot the
world quite well and have a couple of bolt-holes. Will try and get down there
if we can.

Subject of course to the usual ailments and stresses - we were trying to get up
to London later today to visit with Mark and Lisa but it's proving difficult
with my car in for service and Alma's recovering cataract operation, her eye is
a bit tender these past few days and the checkup appointment a few days away
still.

Will liaise nearer the time
