Re: PDML meet-up in Britain? Early May...

2020-03-25 Thread Stanley Halpin
The inevitable has happened - our trip in April-May of this year is officially
cancelled. I have been spending the morning clearing out a number of auto and
hotel and other bookings. And soon I will turn to trying to work out something
for next year.

I was quite saddened each time I clicked the Cancel Reservation button. We had
put a lot of time and effort into planning this trip and had been greatly
anticipating it. Even as the reality of the pandemic became more evident each
passing day over the last month, we were still trying to hold out hope.

Back up your CD-R's and DVD-R's

2020-03-25 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Hi all!

Reading this prompted me to stick my (not-sneezing-yet) head in here...
https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/16/18678447/9-11-ground-zero-world-trade-center-pictures-recovered

I realized that the time flies so fast, and my earliest digital photos are
more than 15 years old. Back in November, I went into my digital archives,
and was able to dig out some photos from 2003. But I know that somewhere in
the boxes I have DVDs with photo backups from 2003-2007. The same photos
must be on external HDDs (I hope), some of which I have not turned on for
ages...

Igor

PS. I've been social distancing from PDML since before the Covid epidemics.
I hope that helped the curve here... :-)

(Can I claim a partial credit for not spooking away a new list member?)
Y'all, stay healthy and positive!
And, Olga, welcome to the list!

On the other side of the coin, we are nearly all going to get this at some
point. Maybe it's better to get it sooner rather than later for those who are
likely to suffer excessively. That, or much, much later. Our stuff was
planned long before the present emergency and mostly completed before the
present regulations were enacted.

My own view is that we should have had this legislation in place the moment
China went into lockdown. People would have then had time to properly apply
the regulations by the time they needed to be effective. Our present,
rearguard, action is going to be totally ineffective. I haven't seen a single
government be able to take an off-the-shelf emergency plan and implement it,
which is part of what I thought we paid them for.
