Re: OT: SA Lockdown

2020-03-26 Thread Alan C
Our lockdown started at midnight. It was 41deg yesterday, forecast 23
for today but no rain. The supermarkets were chaotic all over the
country with most of the black population leaving for their rural homes
while they still could. A lot of the labour force is migrant labour.  I
think they should have been stopped because most of the Corona cases so
far are in the cities & now it is likely to be spread to the rural
areas. Army deployed all over the country this morning. Medical services
coping so far. We are severely restricted. Virtually everything now
closed except essential services & supermarkets with many offering house
deliveries. No running, cycling, walking the dog on the roads - only in
your own yard. All national parks closed but tourists/visitors already
there must stay put. All public transport & flights now stopped. Clergy
may still do funerals under very strict conditions which already started
last W/E. My wife, Ann, who is an Anglican Priest has been issued with a
special permit. The first funeral was already yesterday with an
undercover policeman in attendance. 21st April is the next critical date
depending on how it all pans out. Time to get stuck in to some serious
gardening & autumn clearing. At least there will be no load shedding
because the power demand is so much lower.

good here too. india declared a complete lockdown for three weeks until
april 14 although according to official figures the number of infected
patient stands at 716 and the death toll at 18 (for various reasons,
the official figures are suspect).

for the last six days i have been housebound and i generally go out
shopping for groceries once a day. and it is a delight because hardly
anyone is out there. i've got a teenager who is going to college this
summer in the house but he seems to be taking the lockdown well between
catching up on his reading (history), his backlog of movies and the
occasional gaming on ps4 :) we are of course the lucky ones. there are
heartbreaking images emerging on the plight of migrant labourers and
the homeless:
https://www.news18.com/news/buzz/journalists-capture-heartbreaking-images-of-jobless-migrants-walking-home-after-covid-19-lockdown-2552461.html

media being an essential service here, we start working from this
monday. with all public transport suspended, the office is arranging
transport. i hope to take the necessary precautions but it'll be a
welcome change. i hope you do too stay safe.

Today's project

2020-03-26 Thread Larry Colen
One of the challenges with my studio strobes is that if I use the modeling
lights, they very quickly get very hot, especially with soft boxes.

Today I modified some Phillips dimmable LED bulbs dropping the power dumped
from 250W to 18W
https://photos.app.goo.gl/PK53pNzjKcFKu5SV6

The trick is finding quality dimmable bulbs that don’t have a base so broad
that it totally obscures the actual flash bulb.

Good like Christine and everyone. It's important for your mental health to get
outside as much as you can within the limits of your local rules. Over here we
can go out for one exercise session, walk, run or cycle, per day, plus
shopping. People where i am seem to be fairly reasonable about keeping two
metres apart. I generally go out for a ride in the morning for an hour, and a
walk 20 minutes along the river to a supermarket in the late afternoon to pick
up fresh veggies etc. This morning I went for a 30-minute run on the riverside
path around Greenwich Peninsula, and cycled 30 minutes each way to a
supermarket in the afternoon.

The weather is still beautiful, but quite cold. There's very little traffic and
the air is clean, so it's a great pleasure to be out.

We are keeping our French classes going over Skype, but it's not as much fun as
personal contact.

I work during the day and we're well set up for home working, but my ancient
personal laptop has given up the ghost so I'm having to do everything with my
iPhone (my ancient iPad's not up to it), which is very inconvenient. I'm
arranging to cycle in to the office next week, currently closed except for
security, to pick up the laptop I have there.

Re: OT: Stay Home, Stay Safe, Stop the Spread

2020-03-26 Thread Mark Roberts
We're pretty much locked down here, though I don't think we're
required to be. Yet. But with Dr. Lisa in the house we're on a pretty
short leash :-) Though Lisa and I are edging ever closer to the
high-risk age group, her 92-year-old mother who lives with us is
decidedly there, so we have to watch out for her sake.

All my courses have moved on line, of course. Fortunately, I've always
had a lot of web material of my own. I'm trying to crank out YouTube
tutorials but it's a lot of work! I'd much rather be teaching in
person. In a couple of days our extended two-week spring break ends
and I'll see how engaged the students really are. Crossing my
fingers...

Next week Lisa goes back to work. Being a pathologist she doesn't
generally interact with patients or the public but it's still going to
increase her exposure.

Our home situation is good. Everything, including the hospital, is
walking distance for us (we usually fill up the car with gas once a
month and usually put less than 5000 miles per year on it). We've got
uncrowded places we can walk or run. One benefit of all this is that
I've been able to get out running more often. I just checked my log
and was astonished to find I've run 47 miles in the past week. So
unless I get sick and die I'll be very fit by the end of this ;-)

Stay healthy, my friends.

I spent most of the day making one of these ...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=1=ZusqX4Cfa3w=emb_logo

... slightly modified since I don't have access to the kind of filters they use.

I didn't have a kit, so I made it from the materials I have on hand. My material
is a bit thicker & I'm not a professional seamstress, so assembling my mask
didn't go quite as smoothly as the video.

The shell is a tightly woven polyester (like the fabric that covered your
grandmother's couch) and I sacrificed a high quality (linen?) dinner napkin for
the liner.

But I only made three mistakes I had to go back & rework. And one of those is
NOT MY FAULT ... I cut the elastic longer than the pattern called for and it
still ended up too short & I had to replace it with still longer elastic.

For the filter I'm using 10-12 cup Mr.Coffee filters - 2x doubled over to give
me four layers in front of my nose & mouth.

You can download the pattern here:

https://diymask.site/

I also have these gloves (I keep a box around just for scut work):

https://www.amazon.com/mil-Nitrile-Powder-Free-Gloves-Medium/dp/B00O3A00U8

Wearing them when I go out should be sufficient reminder not to touch my face.

I am staying home. I didn't make my weekly shopping trip this last Tuesday, but
I will run out of 4-cup filters for my Mr. Coffee early next week (I have an
almost full box of the 10-12 cup filters but they won't work in my coffee maker.

I've already tried. They flop over & I end up with a pot full of coffee grinds.

So I probably WILL be making a shopping trip next Tuesday.

I'm not counting on the mask to keep me from getting COVID19, but I hope if I do
somehow get it & have to go out again during the pre-symptomatic contagious
period the mask might help me not to be the one spreading it around.

We just got an emergency alert via our mobile phones that the City of Chicago
is closing down the lakefront, beaches etc, which I think is a good idea.

I’ve been pretty busy with shifting my teaching to online. Our community
college district shifted pretty quickly as things turned, and faculty have
really risen to the occasion. This week I’ve had video sessions with students,
and I’ve been greatly inspired by students wanting to persist with the semester
despite these difficult circumstances.

What is worrisome is finding food and supplies. I haven’t been out in 10 days
expect for a 30 minute walk in an empty park. I’m not that keen on going to
the store, but I will have to in the next few days, and, of course, I will take
precautions. Ordering online is great, but so much is out of stock and the
wait times can sometimes be a bit long, but it just requires us to do a bit of
rationing and be smart about how we use up supplies. A constant refrain in the
house is “we’ll just have to make do,” which everyone around the world is
saying.

Also, we have some friends who are nurses, and I have some students whose mom’s
are nurses, so we’re very worried about them. There are women everywhere in
America sewing cotton face masks for hospitals. Maybe you’ve seen the calls for
face masks on Facebook. I’d love to stitch some up since I have sewing
skills, but my school work has my time pretty occupied. Maybe I can stitch
some up week after next, since we will be on spring break.

This sort of discussion is kind of like when someone posts “I just bought a
K-70 and I want another lens, which lens should I buy?”, the only appropriate
response is “for what sort of photography?”.

Alternatively, deciding between the 77/1.8 and the new 85/1.4 is like deciding
between a 30W tube amp and a 100W solid state amplifier (*). Some people will
argue that the solid state amp is more accurate, and others that the tube amp
sounds better. Some people will say that the tube amp is better for some sorts
of music and the solid state better for others.

One thing that I know about my 77 is that for many years after I got it, I
could not look through the viewfinder when it was on my camera, without it
making me smile. If you define “imperfection” as difference from an exact
representation of the scene, every lens has imperfections, some of them are
pleasing to some, some are displeasing. It’s kind of like the ginger who hates
the freckles that you think are so incredibly attractive.

I’ve learned that in low light conditions, the difference of 2/3 stop can make
a lot more difference than one would guess. I’ve also learned that with
(pentax) autofocus, more magnification means more separation between autofocus
points, and less chance that the camera will focus on the thing that you don’t
want it to. The 85/1.4 is also weather sealed, which can make a big difference
when shooting outdoors. On the other hand, it’ll probably weigh about the same
as my 77, 43, 31, and FA50 all put together. And for that matter, until they
hit the used market, I’d probably have to sell all of those to have enough
money to buy a new 85/1.4.

I expect that when things settle that they will both be great lenses, that in
most cases the optical differences between them won’t matter, but there will be
cases where one would be better than the other.

* As an aside, it turns out that someone I was having a debate with on facebook
was involved in the design of the NAD3020, which was the first piece of audio
gear that I bought, and amazing piece of kit, especially for the price.

Heresy alert: Don't read past this if you are faint of heart our have
other underlying conditions.

The 77 is a good lens, on film with the AF that we had at the time it
was a very good lens, maybe even a great lens, but that was then, this
is now.
Today, the 77 is a dated design with slow AF gearing that is prone to
all sorts of fringing.
Yeah, it's under corrected spherical aberration gives it nice bokeh and
a great deal of three dimensional effect, but to just toss off "when you
get it right" says a lot more than the lens delivers.

I doubt it, since this lens was only put into production and released for
purchase about 9 months ago. I haven't seen any reports of the "Hasselblad
Space Delivery" program carrying equipment for Moon use this past year, yet.
Odder, less likely things *are* happening so it remains a future possibility…

My impression is that it's just as much the aging players as older CDs.
Two of three computers here don't even read ordinary audio CDs anymore.

Very interesting thanks.
Being locked in at home for two weeks now I have already read most of the
themes covered in the video, but it is a very well done summary.

As a curiosity the video also explains that the Spanish flue is called this way
not because of its origin but because, not being involved in World War I, Spain
was the first Western country that reported cases of the disease.
