I'm pretty sure the camera comes with the typical hot shoe cover. The 50

Green button automatic now works off the shutter button. Push the shutter
button and it goes through the green button motions and takes the picture.
Since the camera works at 12fps, this should be a very quick operation.
I believe they have extended the feature to a couple of other exposure
modes, but I don't recall which ones.

FWIW, I don't think the hot-shoe cover design has changed since the PZ-1p. I

I found several rummaging around in miscellaneous Pentax stuff at camera stores

I still don't understand why someone would pay $50 for a replacement hot-shoe
cover. If you lost the one that came with the camera, aren't you just as likely
to lose the replacement one too?

Dear God, we certainly do our very best to find non existent problems don't we?

If you don't need more than one battery per day of shooting, plug the camera

We went again in 1964 and by then most of the trip was on Interstates. But
they hadn't completely replaced the old highways.

The 1964 trip was when the Ranger at The Petrified Forest directed my dad
to pull off "where they were building the new highway" (I-40) "and we could
pick up all the petrified wood we wanted" because it was outside of the
National Park.

Does that mean you can’t get your sticks on Route 66?

I guess not. That part of Route 66 through Arizona is long gone.

But I-40 is still there & the park boundaries are clearly marked.

On one of my trips out west since I got home from Iraq, I stopped at the place
where I thought we might have been in 64 to see if I could find any petrified
wood. I'm pretty sure Arizona doesn't have any law against collecting petrified
wood outside of the park boundaries.

In 64 the lanes had recently been graded, but not yet paved, and where the
shoulder of the highway is today there was just a line of freshly plowed dirt in
a linear mound. That's where we found the petrified wood.

Since then the highway has been paved, the shoulder is paved & the right-of-way
on either side has been seeded with grass (or what passes for grass in Arizona)
and when I stopped in 2013 (almost 50 years later) I didn't seen any petrified
wood just lying about on the surface.

I don't necessarily disagree with you about the _need_ for a battery charger
for many buyers; my point is that, for an unknown percentage of buyers, the
$40:00 extra might be the difference between buying and not. Assuming the
wholesale cost of a charger would be $20 and the cost to buy from the
manufacturer in bulk would be half that, it does rather come over as spoiling
the ship for a ha'porth of tar. The packaging probably costs more.

Thanks Alan.

The reason I believe this one was made by Tokina is several other Tokina
lenses I see online that have very similar or the same design:

Those are two examples but there are more. I might be wrong though!

Re: An old Sears M42 preset 35mm lens

2021-04-03 Thread Juan Buhler
Thanks Cotty!

I still see tons of issues with my videos though!

I've been trying to make the fonts period-correct for the lens I'm looking
at, but you're right, I wasn't paying attention to serif vs sans-serif.

It's a really interesting process, not only I'm learning a bit about making
the videos themselves, but the overall production pipeline is fun and
rewarding to put together. Early on I wanted to assess the cost/benefit of
the whole process, and decided that making a new video all together should
not take more than 4-5 hours, not including the time making photos with a
given lens. Otherwise it's not worth it. Right now I have about 1-2 weeks
lead time for any video, so at any given time I have one or two videos I
haven't posted yet.

I always had a lot of respect for people doing film production (as opposed
to the actual, in my case, animators, software developers, etc) and how
their work keeps the process going and how a good producer can make the
whole thing pleasant and productive and a bad one can create a nightmare of
overtime and frustration. It's cool to see that works at a small scale as
well.

I had a Lumix FZ50 which I absolutely loved in many respects. For one, it
handled just like an SLR. There are certain advantages to the electronic
viewfinder, like being able to see the histogram in real time. There were also
certain disadvantages, and one day of shooting I switched between the FZ50 and
my SRT-101 and the optical viewfinder was incredibly spacious and easier to see
through. EVF technology has improved, and in low light it is easier to
manually focus with an EVF than an optical.

I went from that to the K100, which by today’s standards had abysmal high ISO
performance, but even so compared to the FZ50 it was like night and day. I had
considered that replacing my stolen FZ50 might be an economical alternative to
a long lens, but then I found an amazing deal on a used bigma.

I would suggest getting a bridge camera, initially, as a supplement to your
DSLR. There are many cases where they do well, and others where they do not.
Sensor performance is roughly the square of the sensor size and lens weight is
roughly the cube of sensor size. This leads into some interesting calculus for
the optimal sensor size balancing performance and weight, but the bridge
cameras tend to be closer to cell phone sensors than DSLR. If you get a bridge
camera, you cannot upgrade the sensor without replacing the glass. On the
other hand they can optimize everything to work together and you are also much
less likely to get dust on the sensor.

I was seriously considering looking into micro 4/3 (like John is fond of) as
something to carry on my bicycle. The other advantage of u4/3 is that you can
get adapters to use pretty much any 35mm system lens ever made, albeit in

OT Superzooms

2021-04-03 Thread Toine
After realizing my next photo buying frenzy probably involves a $2000
body and if I make that kind of investment also a $2000 LBA 150-450
for serious birding I think I should consider other options for
birding. Also considering the heavy weight lifting for 3-4 hours while
strolling around in the woods. Breaking both my wallet and my back.
Maybe a Superzoom like the Nikon Coolpix P950? I switched from analog
Pentax to digital on the Coolpix 950. Why not switch again to a 950 :)

Any list wisdom on superzooms which support RAW format?

Very striking patterns and compelling composition!

If it were mine, I might crop it a bit to simplify the patterns and make it
a bit more minimalist, but it is quite effective as is.

Re: PESO: Tulipsasty blooms

2021-04-03 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
When they wilt, I will plat them at the edge of the woods. The deer can
eat the blooms this year and whatever might grow up next year. The trick
is keeping them out of our patio area and, to the extent possible, the
front and back yards. T6hey really devastated my rhododendrons over this
past winter, as the weather made them desperate and also made it impossible
to reach all the plants to spray with repellent.

Kiron 28/2 (I think this one has haze though!)

Except if you have to sell your existing camera to finance the new, you are
less likely to sell/will command a lower price without the charger.

Re: DP initial review of K-3 III

2021-04-03 Thread Henk Terhell
I've discovered that with the K-1 on tripod the majority of my pictures
are nowadays taken after composing in live view.
It is easier to select focus and has wider focus area. With the
possibility to adjust the angle of the screen it is easy enough to avoid
reflection of the screen.

And with focus stacking or HDR I use the remote control.
So I don't care much about the viewfinder except for pics of fast moving
animals, but for which faster AF is of much more importance.

commented that developing it must of been a considerable effort. I
have no idea what it takes to build a better finder, but it may be
that Pentax is really serious about people wanting to use optical
finders vs EVF's and decided to build the camera around this feature.
Hopefully there is really a market segment motivated by super nice
view finders. The camera does look impressive.

In the Netherlands they halted AZ shots for everyone except 60-64 by
the GP. That's my group and the AZ shot was promised from February
1st. No date yet. Given all the bad news about AZ I would much prefer
one of the others. Absolutely no way to get any (other) brand unless
endorsed by the bureaucrats. Unused (prepared) shots are dumped in the
bin because rules are rules. I heard you can get one in Bulgaria.
Feels like living behind the iron curtain or inside a Monty Python sketch...
I wonder what happens if I refuse the AZ shot. Probably nothing and
the only option left is hoping I'll survive the real infection.

Re: DP initial review of K-3 III

2021-04-03 Thread John Francis

For what I used to spend a lot of my time photographing, auto-focus began doing
better than I could manage around 25 years ago, which is why I bought a PZ-1p.
And after one too many times where I tripped the shutter just a little bit too
early, I want a camera that is ready to take the next shot as soon as possible.
I don't fret over much about my development as a photographer - I just want a
tool that helps me get the shot I want, especially in fast-changing situations.

The one that B have been showing for a while is at least metal, not plastic.
I'm not sure whether the one on the German web page, which is apparently a
special K3 one that is made to look a bit like a pentaprism housing, and has
the word Pentax on it (albeit not inscribed in large, friendly letters ...)
is metal or plastic.

If you are doing the type of photography wher the K-1 shines, then it's
probably the best body for you. I shoot more at the longer focal lengths
than at the wide end (and find 16mm on a crop-factor body to be wide enough),
so for me the larger sensor of the K-1 isn't particularly tempting, especially
since the image quality of even my old K-5 sensor is hard to fault unless I'm
really pushing things.

What I'm looking for is better autofocus (and as fast a frame rate as possible
in the continuous shooting mode). I'm waiting to see what the reviewers have
to say about the new autofocus system, but early reports seem promising.
