Re: October PUG is up

2021-10-04 Thread Brian W
Hi Dan

Thanks for the kind words although there's not really a lot of effort involved -
just something to do in front of the TV on a few evenings a month :-)

Glad you liked "Wriggle" - just wish I could have thought of a better title.

Cheers

I remember my old MG. Always in the shop, and always a long wait for

Re: converting PEF to DNG .. help needed

2021-10-04 Thread John

If you ever do need it, I think I have the codec you'll need for Window 7 Pro
64bit.

I'm getting ready to replace this computer, but I'll keep it just in case.

My video card is failing. No big deal for text & viewing images, but the one
computer game I like to play keeps crashing. Due to the crazy situation with
computer chips, I found I could buy a whole new computer with a faster
processor, more RAM and a 8GB video card for the same price as replacing an 8GB
video card to fit this computer.

This computer is OLD - in the sense that "Grandfather's Axe" is old (Mother
Board is at least 5 years old and I think probably closer to 10) and they don't
make many video cards that will fit inside it any more ... and the ones they do
make are EXPENSIVE.

The three drawbacks are it only has a 1TB SSD (M.2), which is not that big a
problem because I have additional hard drives - extra 4TB drives in case my
server has a drive failure, it's the Linux equivalent to RAID 6, so I can
rebuild the array if a drive fails and because it has dual parity it will even
allow me to rebuild it if a second drive should fail while rebuilding the array.

I have a 5TB array & a 10TB array.

The second drawback is I can't put a DVD drive in it. I know everything is
online in the cloud or stored on a media server and DVD drives are OLD TECH and
obsolete, but I like them and I want one in my computer. But this has the fancy
glass front so you can see the pretty colors the cooling fans make. It has the
bay where the DVD drive could be installed, but there's no way to open it
through the cover.

The third drawback is it came pre-loaded with Windoze #@%$^&%*## 10 and *I HATE
WINDOZE #@%$^&%*## 10* (I had a VERY BAD experience trying to upgrade, which is
why I still have Windows 7 Pro 64bit).

I am not looking forward to the fight I'm going to have to make it DO WHAT I
WANT TO DO.

But I'm not sure. I didn't install it just now because I already have it

Re: GESO British car show

2021-10-04 Thread John
That must have been a while back. When I got mine (early 90s) you could get
every part for one - including a complete body - from Victoria British Ltd. in
Lenexa, KS (looks like they've been bought out by Moss Motors) or from The
Roadster Factory in Carlisle, PA.

Every part except one - the air pump for the emissions system was no longer
available ... BUT

Turned out Lucas had licensed the design to Toyota and the Corolla air pump from
AutoZone would fit.

You just had to take the mounting bracket off & rotate it 90 degrees to get it
back into the original position so it would fit the MGB.

Re: GESO British car show

2021-10-04 Thread John

Both rubber-bumper tourers.

The first one was my mid-life crisis car in my mid-40s because I couldn't afford
a Porsche and a Miata was too damn small (no leg room - couldn't operate the
clutch without my knee hitting the steering wheel).

I acquired the second one for parts, but then found out it was too complete to
part out.

It's sitting out under tarps where my mom used to live out in the country (my
sister bought the land from the other sibs), but the car is still there. I'd go
get it and bring it here if I had some place to store it.

The first one is sitting in my basement waiting for me to get enough "round
tuits" to repair the damage vandals did to it the ONE TIME I had to park it out
on the street instead of in my driveway.

They smashed the windshield & driver side glass. It needs a complete new
interior because I wasn't able to get all the glass shards out of it.

And by now it's been sitting so long it probably needs a major restoration.

I know the tires are too old. They'd suffice for me to get it some place to have
new tires put on, but only because the old tires all have inner tubes. I can
repair an inner tube on the side of the road, but a tubeless tire is beyond me
(I don't have the tools & couldn't afford them).

The second one gets restoration as soon as I finish restoring the first one. I
don't know what I'm going to do then.

I learned about the magic smoke during my first MOS school (Aircraft Radio
Repairer) & from OJT working with the electricians on the helicopters in my
National Guard Unit (where I spent the first 17 years of my career in the
National Guard).

Getting mine

back on the road has been an exercise in disaster management, and by disaster I
mean wildfires 20 years ago when I was waiting for engine parts, a kid crashing
into my garage and putting it out of commission for a year, I admit that racing
the miata for a few years sidelined my time/energy budget from Jasmine. After
working on the Singer, I’m particularly motivated to let the house fall down on
it’s own for a little while so I can get the MG back together. With the
supercharger I could keep up with miatas down the straights at the track.

It was through the team.net email lists

http://autox.team.net/mailman/listinfo

that I learned the smoke theory of electronics. That electronics work because
of magic smoke, and if you let the magic smoke out, the electronics stop
working. And just like British cars leak everything else, they often leak smoke.

Re: converting PEF to DNG .. help needed

2021-10-04 Thread John
I *know* there's a "codec" that allows DNG files to be seen in Windoze Explorer
that works with Win 7 Pro 64bit, because I have it installed here.

I think it's this one:

http://download.adobe.com/pub/adobe/dng/win/DNGCodec_2_0_Installer.exe

But I'm not sure. I didn't install it just now because I already have it
installed.

LOL!

I remember my old MG. Always in the shop, and always a long wait for
parts. Once, the throttle linkage broke, and I drove around for months
with baling wire as a "replacement part" until one arrived from British
Lowland. It was a lot of fun to drive -- when I could.

Are they both for driving? Or is one for parts? What years? Roadster or GT?

Getting mine
http://www.red4est.com/jasmine/
back on the road has been an exercise in disaster management, and by disaster I
mean wildfires 20 years ago when I was waiting for engine parts, a kid crashing
into my garage and putting it out of commission for a year, I admit that racing
the miata for a few years sidelined my time/energy budget from Jasmine. After
working on the Singer, I’m particularly motivated to let the house fall down on
it’s own for a little while so I can get the MG back together. With the
supercharger I could keep up with miatas down the straights at the track.

It was through the team.net email lists

http://autox.team.net/mailman/listinfo

that I learned the smoke theory of electronics. That electronics work because
of magic smoke, and if you let the magic smoke out, the electronics stop
working. And just like British cars leak everything else, they often leak smoke.

A small gallery, but comprised of fine images.

I agree with Ann that Mark's "Leaf in Snow" is the most striking and

The minimalist in me love Brian's "Wriggle"; very well seen and captured!!
I also really like Ralf's "Peuplingues" for its powerful composition.

You can teach the browser to do that by installing what is called a 'codec'.
Then you don't have to do any file conversion/copying, etc. - it just works.

Ricoh offer one for Windows 7. Their website says it doesn't work for the
64-bit version of Windows 7, but I'm pretty sure one of the earlier posts
in this thread had a pointer to a codec that worked fine.

(That's what I did back in the days when I was using Windows 7).

Re: converting PEF to DNG .. help needed

2021-10-04 Thread ann sanfedele

Paul, John and Igor...

My lightbulb went on at 3 am I don't want a converter to DNG... I
need something to bulk copy my PEFS to JPG"S leaving the PEFS alone...
Ugh. I just need to see what is on the PEFs when I'm browsing my image
folders..  I have a feeling I don't need anything to big or fancy to do
that..  I can't see the raw files DNGS  (or others)  in WIndows Explorer
either.

Now that that is cleared up - I can go back to bed . But perhaps the
converter will be of interest to others on list ..

You all really take good care of me..

Ann -

I found I still have a copy of DNG Convertor v9.5.1.  It's from 2016
so should still work with Win 7.  I sent you a separate email with a
link to download it from Dropbox.  It's a big file (251 mB) so it will
take a while to download.  Let me know if that works for you.

Thanks for trying to help, Igor...

ALAS I have windows 7 PRO - the 64 bit WIndows 7 - so the last option
doesn't work... (says so specifically on line)

The Adobe doesn't work either... as I don't have WIndoze 10..

oh well, it's not really critical - faststone does work.

I've always used Adobe DNG converter which works well (or at least
used to).

One thing that you'd need to choose there is the target version of DNG.
I would first convert just one file and check it by opening in all
the software tools that you are planning to use, to make sure it is
adequate.

Yet another option that could be viable for you is to install a
codec for viewing RAW files on Windows ...
If you have Windows 10, - you can get a free Microsoft's package
"Raw Image extension":
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/raw-image-extension/9nctdw2w1bh8?==pivot:overviewtab

Presumably, it should read all Pentax DSLR's raw files, as it is
using this library: https://www.libraw.org/supported-cameras

If you need that same functionality on a Win-7 computer,
Ricoh/Pentax has a raw codec for Win-7:
http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/rawcodec_win.html

I hope this helps.

ann sanfedele Sun, 03 Oct 2021 07:36:05 -0700:

I have a couple of hundred PEF's that are all in one folder on my
harddrive.. would like to copy all of them to DNG's so I can view
the thumbnails in windows explorer on my computer.. I can see them
in Freestone.. but it is cumbersome for me with my work flow..

Can I do this in bulk?  Got a link to a free down load for me that
will work?

thanks guys,
ann

There’s an RFC for TCP via Avian carrier
https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc1149

Why not TCPIP via Ouija board?
