Re: PESO: My Winter Hobby

2022-02-21 Thread Alan C

Bill, those are real works of art - well done.

We have a 94 year old, John v d Westhuizen, here in Phlalaborwa who has
been making a living out of woodworking projects small & large all his
life. He did his apprenticeship in a furniture factory in Stellenbosch
when he was a teenager. He is a stickler for perfection so I am sure he
would be impressed by your masterpiece. He made all the furntiure in his
house. When he makes chess tables, he measures the individual squares
with a micrometer! He is currently training his son-in-law who runs a
sort-of antique shop to restore old furniture which is big business. I
shall show him your photos.

Re: PESO: My Winter Hobby

2022-02-21 Thread David Mann
They look really nice. Wish I had a heated workshop. We don't get winters
like yours but it still gets far too cold to work in the garage.

I designed and built a mud kitchen for my daughter during the holiday. The
sink came from our old kitchen. I'd had it propped up on some bricks for her
for a couple of years before I finally decided to make something a bit better.

http://gallery.multi.net.nz/photo/1132/

I am considering adding some cupboard doors at the bottom, or perhaps a junked
toaster oven or microwave like they had at her preschool. I definitely intend
to rearrange those bits of concrete underneath in the near future as they're a
bit hazardous.

Cheers,
Dave

Re: Minor landmark

2022-02-21 Thread P. J. Alling
I've said for some time that the K-5[x] cameras were quite likely the
best camera with all the shooting controls that most anyone needed
directly available.

I wish that Ricoh could afford to take what would basically be the guts
of a K-3, with some of the improvements in the K-3III, mainly the faster
more robust shutter and improved AF and put that into a K-5 body.

anyway. I ~really~ like this camera.

Very nice work, both the woodwork and the photography.

Just don't let yourself get boxed in .

About 20 years back I made several music boxes, and found it very
satisfying. I also did so carving with soft stone. That was quite
challenging and created a lot of dust.

Keep up the nice work!

Re: PESOs (5) - Thawed Cemetery

2022-02-21 Thread Rick Womer
Dan, The Woodlands is owned by a nonprofit corporation, and operating
the cemetery is only one of its activities. A fair amount of the land
has bedrock too close to the surface to allow burials; so the property
includes walking and running trails, an apiary, a project to help
establish orchards, and several other activities. The mansion has
offices and function rooms, and pre-COVID was popular for receptions,
art exhibits, and the like.

Through the COVID lockdowns it has been a godsend for the community.
