That is basically true. Most tortoises live on land, most turtles on sea,
and tortoises generally have higher shells and duller colors/patterns,
but there are quite few exceptions, as is true with the
distinctions between butterflies and moths.

Well, maybe not quite as extraordinary. Some of the places in Liège,
Belgium, where most of my industrial shots are from, have a serious
problem with wild boar and they won't run away from you. Much the opposite.

Be glad it's just deer in your garden. I've seen a few gardens which had
been visited by those beasts and they looked as if someone had been
having their driving lesson in a tank. Completely dug over.

Re: GESO: Shady Characters

2022-07-11 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
They are indeed wild. Our neighborhood is overrun with Virginia Whitetail
deer; some call them long-legged rats, but they are cute.

To reduce overpopulation, our municipality hires a hunting club to thin out
the herd each fall, using only bows and arrows. Over the last several
years, two bucks came into my yard to die after being hit with an arrow.
In each case, the hunter was trailing them, and arrived about 10 or 15
minutes after the wounded buck. The club sent me a couple of bottles of
wine on each occasion for the "inconvenience." I don't mind, but it
grosses my wife out, and gets my Alaskan Malamute all excited. He has
learned not to chase the deer into the woods, but he will make sure they
leave "his" yard when he encounters them.

Although box turtles are superficially similar to tortoises in terrestrial
habits and overall appearance, they are actually members of the American
pond turtle family.
I love the green sea turtles that visit the Maui beaches. We have several
pond turtles in the pond of our local park, and they also inhabit the
nearby river.

Re: GESO: Alaska

2022-07-11 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Took another look at your gallery, Stan, and it is worth the extra time!

Like you, I loved my trip to Alaska. I spent two weeks there some years
back, with my wife and son.

I saw a much different Alaska than you did. Since I hate cruise ships, and
my wife, who was a science teacher, wanted to experience the full effect of
the Midnight Sun, we traveled by plane, train, van and rental car. 13
take-offs and landings, three of each on water, three train trips, two
short van tours, two day cruises, and 950 miles in a rental car. We
managed to spend the night of the Summer Solstice in Kotzebue, North of the
Arctic Circle, and then visited Nome, where they were actively prospecting
for gold in the surf.. The Highlight was Katmai National Park, where one
can get very close to the big Grizzlies snapping Salmon out of the air at
Brooks Falls, and climb down into the Valley of 10,000 Smokes, surrounded
by high cliffs of volcanic ash. We took the train to Denasli, and took day
cruises out of Seward, to see the Kenai Fjords, and Whittier, to see the
glaciers up close. Everyone should get to see Alaska, at least once.

In many ways, Alaska is similar in spirit to Hawaii, and not only in the
love of Spam.
