Thanks for cluing me in on that!
I've been dreaming about that lens for a long time but I guess I wasn't
very well informed about it's actual capabilities.

 Hi,

Regarding the 500/4.5 from Pentax. I have the lens (there is one for sale in
the Netherlands for around € 500) and must say I am not that satisfied
regarding sharpness and CA. Might be my focusing skills, but I never managed
to get a 'crisp' image out of the lens. Also, in almost every image clear
purple/blue/green edges can be seen when looking closely. Although a long,
big lens for an affordable price, and it really helps me get the shots I
want, it is probably not the best in the (price)range. I have no experience
 with the 400/5.6 though...

If it need not necessarily be a genuine Pentax lens I would recommend the
Sigma 400 f/5.6 APO, pretty sharp wide open, great build quality, CA
 should
be non existant as it's an APO lens. There's a test on the Canon fitting
 version here:

 http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/sigma_400_56/index.htm

I have the Sigma APO 400/5.6 in Pentax K-AF mount and I've been quite
happy with it. I haven't noticed any particularly tendency toward CA,
but I haven't looked for it, either.
Where might one find such a beast? It's not in the current Sigma lineup.

OTOH, Sigma is apparently offering its newer DG 500mm f/4.5 in a Pentax
AF mount (BH lists it as New, Arriving Soon). If I understand, this is
a new design that replaces the previous 500 f/4.5 which Sigma had
 stopped offering in Pentax mount.

I have the previous version Sigma 300 f/2.8 and it's a fantastic lens,
especially compared against similar lenses at higher price ... so if the
DG lenses are improved beyond that, they ought to be very good indeed.

¿¿ 400mm f5.6 ?? (Bird lens )

2007-06-03 Thread F Mckenty
Hi every one!

Is there any one on the list who owns (or used to own) a Pentax K 400mm
f5.6?

If there is I would be so obliged if you could tell me some things about
it, namely, how sharp it is wide open, and whether or not it has
noticeable CA (wide open).

I have found one relatively cheap ($325 Canadian) and, with the money in
my pocket at the moment, I'm sooo tempted.

I'm looking for a longer (than the 200mm I have) lens for bird
photography. What I'd really like is a 300mm f2.8 or one of those old
500mm f4.5, but I have no prospect of a budget for that type of glass in
the near future (unless one of you fine people has an old one that you'd
like to sell at a good price to a good cause :-) ). Would any of you be
able to recommend (or recommend against) some thing in that price/focal
range?

Thanks for your thoughts,
Francis

PS
If you have any thoughts on my (much updated) photo website
www.islandlight.ca that you would like to share, I would feel honored to
hear them.

Wow... It's hard to tell, but did you keep the 3 masted schooner rig?

No, it's a (cutter) ketch. It was built as a tuna troller so a lot of
whats above decks was modified.

I'm a big fan of Hershoff's ketches. Always wanted to build Neria. One
day, when I have the space, I'll do it.

Sounds as if you like work. :)
It would sure be a cool project (especially once it was finished).

What were the entry requirements regarding the images? Yachting in general

They weren't very specific, I think that the basic idea was photos of
anything that a sailor might see while on the water.

When I first opened this, the bottom third of the picture (with the
rather dark water and distracting railing) was cropped off by my browser
making it somewhat pano like, and I REALLY liked it. I think this (with
it scrolled so you can't see the bottom:)) is one of the best peso's

I used to mow lawns and weed gardens until I resolved that I was going

I got a Lowepro slingshot 200AW and a Sigma EF-500 DG super (both things
that I desperately wanted).
Now I'm wondering if there is a way I can trigger the new flash
wirelessly (not as a slave) without buying second one. The DS does not
appear to have any wireless communication capability built in. Is there
some thing like the Nikon SU-800 (Wireless Speedlight Commander) that I
could get cheap? :)
Any one here tried the Morris universal Infra-red sender?

Can I do high speed sync with K M lenses? It works fine with a DA lens
but when I mount a manual lens the shutter speed will not go faster than
180.

It's aheckofa cool flash.

Merry Christmas everyone,

Thanks for the info.
Using the AF360FGZ Can you fire only the off-camera flash, or do you

As far as I'm aware you can fire only the off-camera flash with the

 communicates)

geso thethingsweEat

2006-12-08 Thread F Mckenty
Hi

Feel like drooling?
http://islandlight.ca/food.php

Here is a shot of one of the setups that I used for this project.
http://islandlight.ca/photos/food-photo-setup.jpg
(The soft boxes are, as you may have noticed, garbage cans.)

I am in the process of doing the photos for a children's cook book and
it occurred to me that there might be some one on the list who actually
knows how to do that kind of shoot (I certainly don't), so I'm fishing
for good advice. I would, of course, be delighted to hear from anyone
who doesn't do food photography as well.
Just out of curiosity, what is the going rate for this kind of a job?

Thanks for looking and have a wonderful day.
