There's been chat here (eg re the Epson 2880) and elsewhere that's got
me thinking about printing alternatives. My local photo shop will
 print
 8x10's on some fancy-schmancy high-end printer/imager for about $10
(Can) per sheet. Or I can buy an ink-jet (eg 1900, 2400, 2880),
 paper,
the inks, and do it myself.

Bruce,
I've been asking myself the same question lately. I currently
have an Epson R220, but I do not use it for printing photos. I have
previously tried using it to print photos, but out of maybe a dozen or
more attempts only one or two have been acceptable.

On the other hand, I just spent $150 on prints (16 or 17, some
11x17 and some 8x12). If I could figure out this whole inkjet
printing game, the R1900 would be a good deal ($500) to save money in
the long run.

I'm just a little printer-shy due to my R220 experiences...

Mike

Gad! I thought figuring out what lenses I needed was research-
 intensive
 enough.

Is there some rule-of-thumb that suggests whether using a printing
 shop
or going DIY with my own printer is the more appropriate alternative?

Then I have to figure out how to frame the darned things ... :-)

I'm surprised you had issues with the R220, it's been considered to be
one of the best printers ever put out in its price range. I have the
sister R320 model (Same basic printer, bunch of extra useless
features) and the output is excellent. You could be seeing a workflow
or paper match issue. Try printing some sRGB images on Epson Premium
Luster paper with the drivers set to let the printer manage colours.

Well, what I really need to do is buy a monitor calibration device I
think. I get excellent results when someone else prints for me, and
my screen output is identical to print when it's done by my favourite
printer. When I do it with the R220, colours are way off.

GESO -- B.C. and Waterton -- Finally, some inspiration

2008-08-04 Thread Mike Hamilton
I purchased a house in March, and also completed a tiring year of
teaching. I'd had little energy or motivation for photography.
Buying new gear helped a small amount, but I needed more.

I took a 3 week road trip in July with my soon-to-be-wife and my dog.
We spent most of our time in British Columbia - 10 days in Nakusp
visiting my parents, then a few days in Nelson. The last part of our
trip was camping in Waterton Lakes National Park - the sister park to
Glacier National Park in the USA.

Difficult to find fault - but if you insist.. 8-)

I would leave out Purple. The plane of focus does nothing for me.

My favourite is Buffalo Paddock II - because I can imagine how it
 looked 200 years ago.

I'd be proud of that gallery too. I didn't like Purple, there just

I note from your trip narrative that you drove past my favourite

Thanks, Bill. I spend a week in that area every summer. My parents

Yes, I fully agree. Unfortunately, I was unable/unwilling to schedule
our hikes for early morning or evening. Travel with a companion
(especially one that you sleep beside) requires compromise. ;)

The light needs to be softened in some of the close-ups by the use
 of a
 diffuser (white, clothe would suffice)

I'll consider that for the future! Im not much of a closeup/macro

Red/Green needs a more OOF background.

Agreed. it did not make my print list. :)

Departing Sunset would be a stronger image with a vertical

eliminating most of the left right third of what you posted. That
 crop
would make that image the best of the group IMHO.

Thanks! I'll see what I can do with this advice!

You shouldn't be. That portrait has buckets of character. I love the
tilt of the head, the crop is excellent, the unlit fag is novel - he's

Well, it's brave of you to put yourself out there like this! I don't

With that said, here are my views:

Your images are not very interesting to me. They seem over-processed
(saturation and sharpening), but it appears as though this is the look
you are going for.

The thumbnails that you have seem to be full size jpegs that have been
coded in html as a smaller size. That means that it takes a long time
to load a small photograph. I would advise re-sizing those images
before uploading.

Good luck with your website.

DA 50-200 ED f/4-5.6 -- excellent condition. Bought last summer.
It's not a lens that I use often. Includes original caps, hood. $160

Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 28mm f/3.5 -- legendary optics, supposed
best of the 28s. This is the 49mm filter design. Tiny, thin
scratches on front element, probably about 3mm long. Body hood are
in very good condition. $60

Zenitar 16mm f/2.8 -- very good condition. Includes original front
rear caps, clear rear filter (and I'm sure that I have the others
around also - just have to find them!), and original lens bag. $130

MZ-5 body -- used this body for a few rolls of film. Very nice to
use. Flash spring is broken, so it does not pop-up. Still works, but
requires a finger to hold it in position. Wasn't an issue for me, the
tiny on-board flashes are rarely used. $50

Prices do not include shipping, from Edmonton, Canada.

Whether off-base or not (and I really don't give a rat's ass, since
I'm never going to own that particular camera, or any other Nikon, for
that matter), what I find interesting is the way he can review a
 camera without ever holding one.

I expect the speed and dynamics...

I expect the technical image quality...

 Nikon claims the same start-up...

Seems that all he's doing is reading a spec sheet and commenting on
 that.

Regardless of the preview, would someone send this guy a monitor

Nice one, Frank.

I used to ride a scooter. Honda Dio, fitted with a custom expansion
pipe that nearly required earplugs at idle speed. However, one of the
dangers is thinking that you can get away without obeying the rules of
the road. I also had an Aprillia when i was in England (nice hot

They're as safe as most other two-wheeled vehicles, as long as you
respect the rules and drive with awareness of the drivers around you.

Our winter is very damp so it feels colder at times than it did in

I've lived in Alberta all of my life - up to 57 degrees N. We have a
yearly cold snap (typically in January) that lasts up to two weeks.
The cold usually hits a low of -40C, and it's dry.

I can't say much about a damp cold, but it doesn't sound like much fun.

Any significant issues that you've come across? I'm planning to use

FS: FA 20-35 F4 AL

2008-03-14 Thread Mike Hamilton
An excellent lens that I may end up regretting the sale of. I bought
this lens from BH 2 years ago to replace the 18-55 kit lens, and
also as an occaisional wide angle for film use. I have owned it since
new.

The rendering of this lens is amazing. It's sharp, produces beautiful
colours, and allows for pretty close focus. It's also very compact.
The FA 20-35 can be used for ultra-wide angle on film SLRs also.

The condition of the lens is very good. There are some very minor
scuffs on the body of the lens. Glass is impeccable. No visible dust
internally. Aperture ring clicks smoothly.

Check out the reviews on this site: http://www.pentaxforums.com/

Yes, as I mentioned, I love that lens. However, I don't use it very

could use the money from this lens more, however. :)

FS: Asahi Spotmatic SP, S-M-C Takumar 200/4

2007-12-14 Thread Mike Hamilton
Two items:

1) Asahi Spotmatic SP (chrome) - recently replaced the foam seals on
the door, body, and mirror stop. All shutter speeds are accurate.
Meter works. Overexposes by 0.3-0.5 due to 1.5v battery (instead of
1.35v as originally intended). Body is in very good condition. Some
rubs near the tripod mount (to be expected). Small mark on top of
prism due to hotshoe adapter (also included, with new foam to protect
prism). Self timer works. Asking $100 (EX condition at KEH is $133).

2) Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 200mm f/4 - very good condition with
very minor marks around barrel. Focus is very smooth, as is aperture
ring. Glass is in fine condition, some dust inside lens, but not
much. Including front cap (original in excellent condition) Asking $50.

Shipping from Canada. Estimate of $17 to USA for either item. Will
provide exact quote if requested.

Thanks.

 Thanks

Striping is where two or more drives are treated as one. All
information is recorded over the two drives, so there are bits and
pieces on both. It's used to speed up read/write access. It's not
useful for backups. If one drive fails, you lose the data on both
drives due to the way the data is shared over the two drives.

HTH.

Taken at an art gallery function a few weeks ago. Plenty of cool
people abound! :)

K10D, DA21, shot from the hip @ iso 800. Enjoy!

Storing Prints

2007-09-29 Thread Mike Hamilton
I've been printing more of my photos, and I'm gathering a collection
of them now. I matte each photo with matte board (no foam core), but
now I'm facing an issue of storage. What do you all do with your
printed photographs?

Re: PESO - Jasper Avenue

Thank you, Boris! I don't recall anyone crossing the street during
this photo.

Mike, usually when a person is waiting for the green light and then

very night ghost. A pity none is present on the picture.

 Great one nonetheless!

A 3.0 second exposure from a second floor balcony on Edmonton's main
 downtown avenue. Lots going on.

Enjoy! All comments welcome and appreciated!
