I didn't realize John Sessoms was there and regret not getting to meet him. Bill On Sun, Jun 5, 2011 at 7:28 PM, Mark Roberts m...@robertstech.com wrote: OK, another year and another GFM Nature Photography Weekend has passed into the history books. Words cannot describe how exhausted I am now. I'm now at my friends' place in nearby Ashe county having a beer after a sound afternoon nap. I think this was the best, smoothest running GFM ever. It certainly bodes well for the future as founder Don Nelson reduces his involvement with the event and Doug Brewer and I take over more of the management role. (We're already scheming about 2012.) The 10th anniversary of the original PDML meet-up at Grandfather Mountain had a smaller PDML turnout than usual, but fully 50% of the original 6 from ten years ago were present: Myself, Doug Brewer and Bill Owens. I really must apologize to John Sessoms and Ted Beilby for not being able to spend more time with them during the weekend. I always want to take advantage of the rare opportunities to meet with PDML members in person when the opportunity arises but this event is a major time sink. On Saturday I did my annual photography hike, again on the Profile Trail, but this year had only Pentax shooter and occasional PDML lurker John Weber for company. None the less, our trek yielded some good photos for me and a *prize-winner* for John. Not bad, all things considered. John and I also hatched a scheme to take advantage of the unusually clear weather to try to get sunrise photos from the Cragway Trail on Sunday morning. This trail has stunning views but is usually socked-in with fog in the morning (Doug and I tried a pre-dawn photo expedition there a couple of years ago and enjoyed 50-yard visibility during sunrise). We planned a 4:30 AM departure, which seemed reasonable at the time. We soon found an extra 4 people added to the expedition. We were up at 4:15 an on the trail only slightly later than planned (due to the extra difficulty of coordinating the larger group) but made our way to the spot called Top Crag View by 5:50 after an aggressively-paced hike up the trail. Hiking difficult trails by the light of headlamps in pitch darkness is an acquired taste. Despite the unusual lack of fog, sunrise was obscured by a bank of clouds on the eastern horizon, but there were some fairly good photographs to be had and everyone enjoyed the hike. Still, the early start made for a long day... Photo contest judging and awards preparation were completed ahead of schedule(!) and the contest entries were some of the best ever. I think the Doug and Mark Show was one of the best ever, too. It really helps when you're prepared and relaxed. Amazing, huh? But the 4:15 AM start made for a long day and even with an afternoon nap I'm fading now. I've backed up all my SD and CF cards onto the laptop and I'm going to quit work for the day and relax. I still have two presentations to prepare for later in the week but for now I'm just going to chill a bit. I'll have photos and more videos on line soon. OT but I wanted to share
For those of you are FB friends, you've already heard about this Our power went off at about 1:00 am Tuesday morning. We went for my IV therapy Tuesday and when we returned, a great neighbor/friend had drained old gas, cleaned and got our generator started, giving us lights and TV. The windstorm had also taken out our cable service, and this same friend bought and installed a digital TV antenna so we could at least have over the air reception. Re: Back Again
I had similar results at Duke Hospital. I was sdmitted on Friday, and could have been discharged Satuyday, but Medicare required a 3 dau stay. Couled have saved bundle for those extra 2 days. Food was pretty good for hospital food. May have to go back next week for CLL treatment Bill On Wed, Nov 24, 2010 at 9:01 PM, John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com wrote: From: Walter Gilbert Great news about the surgery, sorry to hear about the food Could be that's their way of discouraging lengthy hospital stays and discharge appeals. It doesn't work. I should have been out on Friday, and I would have been if I hadn't gotten sicker at every meal. I wanted to get out of there on Friday. I think it's just a well meaning, misguided cost-cutting measure. The contractor bid too low and is cutting way too many quality corners struggling to make a go of the contract. Contract meals don't have to be so ghastly. But what the VA saved with the right hand, they more than lost with the left. Because it didn't discourage me from lengthening my stay. It impeded me getting the hell out of there. Figure under the old system it might have cost them $15 per day for my meals. Instead they're only spending $10 a day ... or $7.50. The downside of those savings is I couldn't choke down the food. What little I did manage to choke down wouldn't stay down. And I couldn't be discharged until I could eat. It actually made me sicker and I stayed two additional days before I could be discharged. Figure it generously at $500 a day to keep me in the hospital (probably cost the VA closer to $1000 every day I was in there). They saved $15 on food for Thursday and Friday. Which they turned around and spent anyway on food because I was there Saturday and Sunday. *PLUS* it cost another $1000 for the two additional days I stayed in the hospital because the food made me so sick they couldn't discharge me. And when I did get out of there on Sunday I was sicker than I should have been because I'd had no effective nutrition for 6 days. Nothing but clear liquids after midnight Monday = Tuesday and nothing that managed to stay down longer than a minute Thursday through Sunday. I did manage to eat something, I think a cup of clear broth, in SICU on Wednesday night and got a nibble of egg a cup of coffee on Thursday morning. It wasn't until I went into the general surgical ward Thursday evening that my problems with the food began. To that add the two hours prior to flight time that I'd need to travel from home to the airport and deal with airport crap. Then another hour at the other end. So Im at 7+ hours. And that's if all the flights are on time. Martinsville is 600 miles from my front door. I can drive there in about ten hours. If I drive, I can take more equipment -- perhaps even my studio strobes. I'm thinking now that I should drive. But I don't like to drive for ten hours, twice in three days. If I fly. I can work on some of my writing on the plane, so that's a big plus. Can't decide.
