I kinda winced when I read that, Dave. ;-) You really need to leave
Time Machine alone to manage its own files. Many snapshots are
dependent on earlier data being there to be coherent. Normally it
clears space automatically as it needs room for new backup snapshots.

Sometimes the best thing to do with a malfunctioning Time Machine is
format the drive and restart TM using it. Basically, just reset and
start again. Of course you lose all the backups until now so you are
taking a risk, but just take care for the first few days until you
have a full and complete backup and a snapshot or two on the disk and
you should be good to go.

I'm only a "FB friend" but we've chatted a bunch since I joined the

I located a link to his obit:

His FB profiles -- which his cousin has been adding updates to -- is here:

I liked Dan and I know he was a steadfast PDML contributor. He'll be missed.

Re: PESO: Rediscovering the K-7

2020-12-03 Thread Bruce Walker
That's lovely light, Ralf. A fine shot.

The K-7 was the immediate successor to the K20D, with a very similar
(but updated) CMOS sensor. I was very fond of my K20D and shot with it
for a good seven years. I really loved the rather filmic look to the
images -- I don't have the same issue with grain/noise that gets other
photographers into a tizzy.

I sold it cheap last year to a young budding photography student and
it's still being lovingly used.

I tried my K-3. It works but there's no way to rid the feed of every
single overlay distraction. I was able to disable all but the AF focus

it's fairly cheap on Amazon. Fed it into the free OBS Studio on my

I can tell right away something's amiss. It's unlikely that a popular
photography site, having seen my photos, would still want to feature
them.

They've been around for many years, that much I know. They have
co-sponsored contests with some photography-related companies since
the 2000's.

So I will just have to make do with the espressos I can savour at a

Damn you, Bob! ;-)

My preferred gear chose me early on -- a Hario V60 ceramic dripper --
and I decided to forge ahead with that. When I get it right it's the
best coffee I've ever had, but if I'm inattentive even for a moment
while brewing, it's ... uh, suboptimal. There are some very good
coffee roasters in the area and I'm working my way through their
single origin beans one by one.

I shall give your smoothie recipe a try. I picked up a Blendtec
blender at a decent Black Friday price and it likes challenges, like
banana peels. Also whole carrots, celery stalks, large chunks of ice,
anything really. I think it would happily blend a piano if I could get
it into the jar.

Igor, you needn't let lacking a "suitable backdrop" stop you. Just use
a wide aperture with a decent distance from behind your kid to the
background and let blur create a nice randomly mottled background.

And, I don't know about you, but in these stuck-at-home pandemic days
I *relish* finding an involved project! Presently I am pursuing the
perfect pour-over coffee (using spreadsheets, weigh scales,

make decent protein smoothies to my task list.

I can safely state that shooting portraits is a breeze compared to
consistently making good pour overs. :-)

Lots of fine stuff in here to browse. Thanks for curating it, Brian!

I'm particularly drawn to Mark's Walk. The visual echo and the overall
simplicity works for me.
The simplicity in Rick's Steps also does it for me.

Re: Peso: Landline

2020-11-11 Thread Bruce Walker
When my neighborhood was finally wired for real fiber, I canned my
copper-pair landline and moved entirely to VoIP. Through the magic of
number portability I kept my ages old phone number as the primary VoIP
number.

It's all very amazing now, with multiple simultaneous calls in and
out, call-screening, voicemail, and all kinds of office PBX features.
My old copper based POTS phones are all still hooked up by way of ATAs
and I have a refurb multi line Cisco VoIP office phone on my desk.

The best part? The telco was charging me over $60 Canadian per month
for that plain vanilla no-frills landline, with no LD plan. Now I get
a year of world-wide calling and all the other features for under
forty bucks.

I do have a bunch of UPS A/C battery backups to keep the networking
gear alive in case of power failures. We get brief A/C hiccups fairly
often around here. But the phone system is at least as reliable as it
used to be in the old POTS copper pair days.

Re: OT: NYTimes: Richard Avedon’s Wall-Size Ambitions

2020-10-18 Thread Bruce Walker
Thanks for this Stan!

I love Avedon's work. I have struggled for years about what my
attitude is toward art vs fashion and I have finally come to the
conclusion that "the art world" can go suck an egg. That they could
sneer at Avedon until after his death is beyond reprehensible.

Then there's the photographic world's own prejudices:

>> On top of that, “street photography” was ascendant in curatorial circles
>> and it would not be until the beginning of this century that “studio”
>> photography
>> was given equal stature in critical thinking about photographic practice.

As far as I can tell, the likes of Robert Frank, Walker Evans and Alec
Soth are still pre-eminent and studio work is still ignored.

Three cheers for the talented and creative "fashion" photographers, like Avedon.

Re: OT Instagram

2020-10-11 Thread Bruce Walker
Toine, the lack of Real Computer posting was an intentional design
decision the Instagram designers made ages ago. At the time Twitter
was the big up and coming deal and the Instagram guys decided to
create something similar for images that would promote spontaneity and
casualness. They really wanted folks to share snaps from their mobile
devices pretty much live, like shots of your lunch or the concert
you're attending. The concept of enabling professional photographers
to join in was not on their radar.

So you'll find that the only legal way to post shots is via a mobile
device, and what's worse, if the EXIF contains a date older than a few
days it won't even show you the image to post it. They initially
enforced a square crop on all shots to fit in with some tight-assed UI
design aesthetic but eventually relented and relaxed that to include
up to 8x10 (4:5 ratio) in portrait, and even wider in landscape.

What I do is to export images from Lightroom on my iMac stripping the
EXIF (specifically: no date), and adding white bars to the image to
letterbox it if it's a narrower portrait than 8x10 format. IG will
happily accept reasonably wide landscape formats. Then I send the
images to my iPad through AirDrop, and post from the IG app on the
iPad. 1600px in the longest dimension seems to work okay for
resolution.

My IG profile is @bruce.walker

BTW, there are applications around that claim to allow posting
directly from a desktop but Instagram always thwarts these eventually
by changing their protocol. I used to use a Lightroom plugin called
Lr/Instagram but it broke completely last year and the developer
hasn't managed to fix it since. Some folks run the native Instagram
app in a browser developer window; I can't be bothered to go to those
lengths.

Cheers!

Re: Power adapter D-AC50

2020-10-07 Thread Bruce Walker
By coincidence, my almost identical 3rd-party adapter arrived a couple
of weeks ago but I haven't tested it yet. I ordered it to use with my
K-3 as a streaming video source. But since I discovered that Pentax
cameras can't be made to output a clean video signal I put that idea
aside in favour of a small security camera instead.

I'm glad to hear that it hasn't fried your gear, Toine! :-) I intend
to use it for some tabletop macro work later on.

I agree about the original Pentax adapter. The big US retailers list
it as always out-of-stock and damned expensive for what it is anyway.

Re: PESO: 3D pop?

2020-09-29 Thread Bruce Walker
Mark, I bought an early Super-Multi-Coated Takumar version of that
lens. Mainly because they're the cheapest of that design used, and Rob
Studdard recommended it. (I watched eBay for a few weeks until I saw
one in good shape for under $400 US.)

I like how it performs and the images look. Very, very sharp indeed.
It's easy to manual focus with the really long throw it has. I haven't
pushed the backlit scenes so far, but in those few I have done I
haven't seen CA.

I think you'd find great results with your 67 glass, but of course
it'd be much the same shift for you as using 35mm glass on the crop
APS-C bodies.

Re: PESO - Leap, fauxlarized

It's less tricky using digital curves adjustments (rather than
development timing and turning on lights), but it still requires
plenty of fiddling around. Finding the point where I want to apply the
knee where positive tone mapping becomes negative is the hardest part.
But I realized that I can use dodge to shift different parts of
the shot into and out of negative and suddenly it starts to get even
more creative!

Thanks, Ann!

I really appreciate that, Dan. Thank you very much!

Dorrie "Tattered Sweater" Mack is a definite fave with everyone. I was
scheduled to shoot with her again just before the Second Wave began to
scare everyone and scuttled my plans. She's my #1 muse.

PESO - Leap, fauxlarized

I was recently reading up on Erwin Blumenfeld and his Man Ray
influenced work inspired me to try playing around with solarization. I
chose an unedited shot from 2018 work with dancer Joy Kidston. I used
Photoshop Curves to simulate the darkroom effect, thus
"fauxlarization".

I have worked with a lot of dancers, Igor, and what I can tell you is
that they bring an enormous individual repertoire and personal style
to the project. Ie, you are photographing *that* dancer and his or her
unique style, not just some generic dance poses from a generic dance
practitioner.

You hear Jordan saying things like, "do something pretty here", and
that's the best way to go because then you are getting the most
creativity from the talent. More than any other models I'd say if you
micro-manage dancers you're wasting everyone's time and abilities.

Not a problem. They will get around physical limits through a
combination of: pixel-shift, software interpolation and extrapolation,
and with current upward sizing trends, by 2030 the latest iPhone will
be about the size of a sheet of drywall.

If they can make fake bokeh sort-of usable, then they can easily make
fake outlandishly huge resolution nearly usable.

Re: PESO - Olivia

2020-09-13 Thread Bruce Walker
I've got plenty more failed attempts I could post to help reset
expectations back down to manageable levels, Bill. :-)

I don't disagree with you that the way she's got her shoulders sloped
and the angle of view together do not make for the best overall shape
for her. It's hard to unsee that now.

Maybe foreshortening was the wrong word for it. All I know is the
closest objects appear the largest which makes shooting down on people
an iffy proposition if one is trying to avoid distortions. But it's
also an angle that gets you a unique perspective and has some
advantages like bringing the floor into play as a background. Jane
Bown was fond of doing portraits by getting her sitter on the floor
then standing on a chair to shoot down on them. I see lots of examples
of that in her Faces book. They look a bit odd, but worked well enough
for the newspapers she worked for.

2020-09-10 Thread Bruce Walker
I hear you, Sasha, and I appreciate that this works for some. But I
have come to realize that I'm a measurer and a planner. It's my
engineering background. I don't like random elements, loss of control,
or inconsistent results. That's why I am not into shooting with
expired film or toy cameras like Instax. I have tried to play the
wild, loose artist and failed. :-)

Many of the models I regularly shoot with are offering this, but I am
not even going to try remote shooting.

I can tell that it would totally not work for me, my style. I have to
have complete hands-on control of the entire scene, lights, and camera
or I can't get comfortable that I'm getting the look I want.

PESO - Olivia

2020-09-09 Thread Bruce Walker
Broke my COVID-19 exile two weeks ago today for my first studio shoot
since February, with this result ... (100% SFW) ...

https://portfolio.brucemwalker.com/index/IeIqHiAEP9xQ

Promptly gone back into the COVID-cave for the (un)foreseeable future.
Too much anxiety all around, and besides: wearing a mask while
shooting causes the viewfinder to fog up annoyingly often. Also fogs
my reading glasses while trying to review shots on the tethering
notebook. And I had to keep considering if I was too close to the
model even though I chose a short tele for distancing.

Working with the vintage 6x7 105mm 2.4 was a dream. Lovely lens.

645Z, SMC Takumar 67 105mm f:2.4 at f:2.4, 1/200th sec, ISO 1600; handheld.

Lights were the strobe's modeling lamps, diffusers and a big silver
reflector. Also ambient room light was lighting the background.

Enjoy!

I have a tilt-up screen on my 645Z which I *never* use. I only ever
shoot using the OVF so the LCD remains flat against the body.

Ironically, I am considering substituting a (tilting LCD) K-1 for my
(non-tilting) K-3 as my backup/alternate body, and I would treat that
tiltable K-1 LCD the same way: stuck resolutely to the back. Can't use
an LCD viewscreen for shooting; don't need an LCD viewscreen for
shooting.

And really, since Ricoh/Pentax has decided to stick with the OVF and
forgo mirrorless designs, favouring the OVF is a reasonable way to go.

Well, good, but it doesn't sound healthy that it too multiple tries to

Assuming APS-C, I'd reach for my go-to normal, the 35mm/2.8 Macro. My
rule of thumb is to shoot no closer to the artwork as its longest
dimension in order to minimize geometric distortion. But if you are
shooting a large work in a small space you might need to go wider and
use Ps to remove pincushion distortion.

Christine, I have photographed painted art, but small enough works
that I could lay them on the floor and light and shoot down on them.

I do something like what you propose for portraits when I suspend
custom painted canvas fabric backdrops from a cross-bar. Usually I
hang the canvas by securing the short edge with many 4" plastic clamps
to the cross-arm (an IKEA curtain rod) which is then hoisted up into
the air with a C-stand boom arm. I use a Superclamp on the end of the
boom arm to hold the curtain rod.

This means I need to crop out the highest portion of the canvas though
to avoid seeing the clamps. That may not suit your purpose, of course.
But you could clone them out in Photoshop.

By the way, when you light your fabric I suggest that you use two
sources: one large soft light from behind the camera position for an
even overall fill; and the second source being a hard light raking
across the surface at a shallow angle in order to pick up the texture
in the fabric. Also to make the beads and metal bits shinier and
visible. You would need to play with the ratio of brightness of the
two sources to control how much texture and contrast you capture.

My experience is that moire rarely happens in real shooting involving
fabrics so I never use the AA-simulation feature. (True, most of my
shooting involves flash where the AA-simulation is useless anyway.)

I'd not want to engage the AA thingy while shooting fabrics with
sequins and beads as that would dull the tiny reflective highlights
that make that sort of subject so interesting. Besides, fabric art
tends to be rough-hewn, irregular and coarser than the fine
herringbone fabrics that do induce moire.

I am very happy to see this arrive as it opens up the option for me to
add a K-1, 50mm and 85mm as a unified kit to backup / alternate to my
645Z kit. I'd really like to have a body with a second focal length
mounted on it ready to grab during shooting and my trusty old K-3 just
isn't cutting it anymore.

Re: Photoshop problems

2020-04-05 Thread Bruce Walker
Hey, John; glad to hear you are making progress.

The GPU is used for a whole bunch of large and small things.
Particularly for me the GPU is used to render the brush tool cursor
when I choose Full Size Brush Tip and Show Crosshair in Brush Tip. I
use this for more accurate dodging and burning (skin retouching).
It's also used for smooth scrolling around the image when magnified.

If GPU disabled is no different for you from enabling GPU options then
I expect that your graphics card isn't well supported and you'd be
better off just disabling it. Your unusual VGA hookup could be
affecting this. GPUs may need a reasonably modern monitor with a
direct HDMI or USB-3 (USB-C) connection for proper functioning.

Cheers!

Re: Photoshop problems

2020-04-04 Thread Bruce Walker
John, a few things to consider:

Since changing the app is easier than Windows, have you tried
downgrading to an earlier version of Photoshop?
Try adding more scratch space. You can configure multiple drives to
supply Ps swap.
Try playing with the GPU acceleration options. I'd first try disabling
it completely to see the effects.

BTW, it's working fine for me on a 5K iMac. Ps version 21.0.3.

Good luck!

Re: Stupid Adobe Question

2020-04-02 Thread Bruce Walker
Yes, that's true, Godfrey. Adobe muddied the waters considerably by
renaming "old" Lightroom to Lightroom Classic CC and added this
multi-platform Lightroom CC app.

I had a quick look at it and determined it's a toy of no use to me. I
never do quick edits on my iPad which is about its limit. Can't
anyway: a single 645Z file would bring it entirely to its knees. They
didn't think this idea through, is my conclusion.

I mainly use Lr Classic CC but when I need it, I use Photoshop CC
intensely and deeply. It's a Swiss Army Knife, extremely useful,
flexible, and sharp. But complicated. Thank goodness for Google and
Youtube. :-)

BTW, Lr Classic CC leverages the cloud too. There are some features
that sync out via the cloud, and you can sync images in your Portfolio
space directly from Lr folders. There's a freebie storage space you
can use to show friends and family too; I forget what that's called,
but it's potentially useful for a social-media replacement (more
private than Facebook or Instagram).

Re: Stupid Adobe Question

2020-04-02 Thread Bruce Walker
Alan, there are no Cloud operations unless you specifically perform
them. All the software is installed on your workstation (or tablet).
All your files are local to your workstation too.

The "cloud" thing is largely a Marketing hype buzzword. What Cloud
gives you is the optional ability to sync your settings, previews, and
various other data like fonts, brushes, tools and such to other
places, like your laptop, a tablet, etc.

Really it's just a software subscription instead of a one time
payment. You get periodic (quite regular, in fact) updates (features
and fixes) with the ability to roll back or even run multiple versions
at the same time if you want to.

Re: Stupid Adobe Question

2020-04-02 Thread Bruce Walker
Larry, much of it is in incremental refinements, and much of it is
under the hood. Speedups in all operations mean it handles my 645Z
files with ease. Faster previews and fewer delays when navigating
them.

Lr uses the GPU now. You can add an external GPU module and get more
speed. Lr also makes more use of multi-CPUs. I can now do dodge
with adjustment brushes for portrait retouching. (If I tried in that
in old Lr it would kill the performance and wasn't practical.) I can
avoid edits in Ps for more things.

The feature advances most visible to me are things like:
Profiles (including LUTs). Profiles are a complete reworking of the
colour correction and handling.
Radial gradients.
Texture slider, which is a refinement of (addition to) the Clarity
slider (like "structure" in Nik). Increase texture for grit, or soften
it for portraits (skin).
The dehaze slider is magic. I use it in negative to add mist to some shots.
Transform has a Full button which is sometimes astounding to use. Will
straighten a shot subtly and Just Fix It.

Plenty of other stuff too, but these are many of the highlights for me.

The software is completely the same. The features and frequency of
updates are also the same.

I subscribe to the ten buck option because (a) I'm cheap, and (b) I
don't need any off-site space. Most of the other odds and ends in the
"Photoshop" plan is in the $10 one too, like Portfolio (I don't use
it), and Fonts (I should be using it).

The Creative Cloud application controls what is installed or not, and
lets you downgrade to prior versions if something fucks up. (I am
currently running one Ps version behind because they broke some
crucial plugins with the latest.)

Once I got over my snit with the subscription concept, I'm very happy
with the CC package. Recent features in Ps and Lr are the bees knees
and save me huge amounts of work, especially things like cloning out
random distracting objects. I'm also really digging LUTs for colour
grading in both Lr and Ps. (You can make a fancy LUT in Ps then import
it into Lr and avoid sending shots out to Ps purely to tone them if
you have a batch to do. It's a bit involved, but worth the effort in
many cases.)

Thank you, Ann!

A bit Weston, although he tended to stick with plainer backgrounds as
far as I've seen so far. I really had other folks, like Arnold Newman,
in mind while composing it.

2020-02-06 Thread Bruce Walker
Thank you very much, Bulent, for this appreciation and critique!

An interesting coincidence to me that you feel fragility in the figure
in nude study. She was 3 or 4 months pregnant when we shot, and
beginning to show.

I was very much aiming for a painterly look in that too. I arranged
all the background elements, and chose a high ISO and wide-open
aperture for softness.

BTW, I failed to mention that I did all post-processing in Lightroom.
Mosty minor slider tweaks.

I considered b but for me colour is a very important part of the
composition.

The negative space above? I was just feeling it. :-) I have been studying
Arnold Newman and designers like Paul Rand and trying to get a better feel
for a wider PoV and including more background. This shot just suggested to
me to open it up more and leave space above. My tendency has always been to
crowd the subject in the frame; I'm pushing back against that.

Thank you, Larry.

PESO x 2 - two bests

2020-02-05 Thread Bruce Walker
Two shots that I consider to be personal bests. The first is from 2
weeks ago and the second is from the middle of December, 2019.

might as well jump
https://portfolio.brucemwalker.com/index/Il3.o3EjAXlU

nude study with Phylactere
https://portfolio.brucemwalker.com/index/I9Ve8hGlONT0

Both shot with the 645Z and the 55mm f:2.8 SDM lens. Each was lit by a
single light source.

The first was lit by an 8 inch hard silver reflector aimed though a
3/4-stop 8x8 foot scrim, above-right.
55mm/2.8 at f/8, 1/125th sec, ISO 100; handheld.

The second was lit by ambient window light, left.
55mm/2.8 at f/2.8, 1/30th sec, ISO 1600; handheld.

Model 1 is Olivia Preston, Playboy Cybergirl of the Year 2018.
Model 2 is Phylactere Rayna, a fine arts lecturer at the University of
Montreal, model, yoga instructor, dancer, photographer.

Enjoy!
