I wonder how the vans would sell if VW made a new one?  The beauty of
the really old ones was that you could fix the engine with a nail
file.

I quit my job at the end of June, but before leaving for Mexico we did
a test drive from San Francisco to Chicago and back. Sorry if I didn't

They make new ones! They just don't import them to the US. But you can
buy them even in Mexico. Of course, they are front-engined and not
forward control, and you won't be able to fix the engine with duct
tape and bail wire, but hey. You could probably make a really nice
reliable camper from a turbo diesel VW T5.

If you guys think the Pentax world is full of obsessive geeks, take a
look at the world of VW buses... Crazy (but in a good way) :)

I'd love to do another trip like the one you're one. When ... who can
say? So many things occlude the possibility.
Felipe says to say hallo and good luck in your travels through Mexico.
Keep the photos coming ... ah, the glory of digital cameras and modern
comm for this kind of thing.

We are with you in spirit. Mayhap when you make it to Argentina I'll
hop a plane down to say hello... Consider that either a warning or a

Thanks guys!

Steven, yes, they are great vehicles. I've had mine for almost three
years now, and I've spent the last two preemptively changing every
part I could think of and afford. They can be money pits, but they are
both fun to drive and really versatile. I think I'll own one of these
things as long as get to own a gas powered vehicle.

 I thought some of you would be interested in reading. We're a bit over
 a month into the trip, just north of Puerto Vallarta right now. We'll
 spend about six months in Mexico, then continue south. The idea is to
 take at least a year to get to Argentina.
