But you didn't have your own wheels , did you?  We only went places
where we could drive ourselves, but there were plenty - and the ferries
we took took our car on them.  We went to many out of the way places on
back roads the Denali "hiway" , the "top of the World" .. drove the
first year up the Cassiar
a, truck route gravel road that intersected with the Alcan outside
Watson Lake in the Yukon.   Our trips to Alaska and the Canadian north
west were bucket list trips  RIchard was dying of cancer for several
years.. in and out of remission.. We were not doing a lot of adventure
sight seeing.. , except for at DEnali where we had to take the busses -
believe me Dan, we saw lots of off the beaten track and could stopa dn
go as we pleased.. traveling usuall no more than 100 to 200 miles a day,
if that.. We only spent a few ours on the road a day... then RIchard
would relax in a motel room leaving me free to take the car and

roam alone..

Re: August PUG is up

That image from Dan Mayola sure looks familiar!

Back when I was working in Mountain View (some 20 years ago now)
that is the view I would have had when I was halfway home if I
took Hwy 101 instead of Hwy 85.

Of course it wasn't often that there was a chance to see snow...

Before anyone asks - yes, some of you may you have seen my image before
(it was a PUG entry 14 years ago). But this is a slightly different crop

Nice gallery, with lots of excellent images. Thanks again for keeping the
momentum of the PUG, Brian!

In my view, the best image is Paul's "Lookout Studio."
The lighting is spectacular, and it well conveys the beauty of a place I
have visited and admired. {Where's the road? )

Among those that m ore diredctly reflect the theme of the month, my
favorite is Henk's "Bike on the Dike." Beautiful scene and strong
composition.
I also really like "Sheep on the Road," by Reinhard Sy. This image brings
back memories of similar roads -- and similar sheep -- in Ireland.

An excellent Gallery!

Once again, many thanks to Brian for putting the gallery together every
month. It is the glue that holds this (tiny) mob together!

I am unable to find an entry that doesn't please or fascinate me in one way
or another. My favorite, hands down, is "Market Day, Djenne, Mali," by
Joseph Tainter. What a powerful image! It positively reeks of mystery,
adventure and intrigue. My second fav is "Rue Levis," by Rick Womer. It
makes me long to return to Paris, or at least to again watch *Midnight in
Paris.*

Congrats to all who participated in this wonderful exercise.

There is a famous one in Simonstown, Western Cape, SA, too.

The painter Hogarth famously had a pug - it features in a statue in Chiswick,
London, where they lived.

The pug's name was Trump.

Well, I now have a little dog.

His name is Prince and he's three years old. He just kind of fell into my lap
this afternoon.

I went to the animal shelter to see what they might have and there was a sign
out front saying they were *FULL* & if you were there to surrender a pet, please
reconsider or at least wait a few days before trying again.

They didn't really have anything but full grown pit bulls. I've nothing against
pit bulls, a friend of mine has one and she's the sweetest girl you've ever met
but too many of them have been mistreated to deliberately make them aggressive
and that's more than I can handle. I decided to check back with them another
day.

On the way out, I met a guy coming in to surrender a little black furry dog. He
said his daughter was going away to college, so she couldn't keep him and there
was no else at home who would take care of him. He didn't know what he was going
to do if the shelter couldn't take him. We exchanged names & phone numbers and
Prince came home with me.

He can call me if his daughter is inconsolable, and I may call him to find out
what time Prince expects to be fed in the morning. I've already been to the
store to buy food, a little harness for walkies and a bunch of the little bags
I'm going to need.

I had to go to a club meeting for a couple of hours this evening and he was kind
of excited when I got home ... didn't know who that strange man was, coming
through his new front door.

I gave him time to calm down before I approached him & then we went for a walk.
I think it will be good. Gives me a reason to do the exercise I've been
neglecting, and I won't be overdoing it keeping it gentle for him.

I'll give him a little time to settle in before I start "tormenting" him with
the camera, but photos will follow.

friend, and now that he's older had mellowed quite a bit.  He really needs to be
groomed every three to four months to keep his fur relatively short, otherwise
he'll be way to shaggy.

Question for PJ: What breed of dog is that?

I've been thinking about getting a small, shaggy dog and that looks like it
might be what I'm looking for ... the "shaggy" part anyway. Can't tell from
the photo how small (or large) it is.

A small dog could ride with me when I go on photo safaris. I want to adopt an
older "shelter" dog, so I don't have to worry about who will take care of it
when I'm gone.

I like the cats, especially Ralf's goofy "Zenobe".

Little black furry dog. Perfect!

We had a dog for 15 years. Meg went to the pet store for catnip, came back to
tell me that I must go and see this little puppy. I saw the puppy, picked him
up. Done deal.
Enjoy your Prince!

Re: August PUG is up!

2019-08-07 Thread P. J. Alling
He's an American Cocker Spaniel, I'm not sure that I can recommend one.
The breed can be quite active, (kind of an understatement).  On the
other hand it is one of the breeds that you can find fairly easily as a
rescue.  He is a great friend, and now that he's older had mellowed
quite a bit.  He really needs to be groomed every three to four months
to keep his fur relatively short, otherwise he'll be way to shaggy.

Question for PJ: What breed of dog is that?

I've been thinking about getting a small, shaggy dog and that looks
like it might be what I'm looking for ... the "shaggy" part anyway.
Can't tell from the photo how small (or large) it is.

A small dog could ride with me when I go on photo safaris. I want to
adopt an older "shelter" dog, so I don't have to worry about who will
take care of it when I'm gone.

I like the cats, especially Ralf's goofy "Zenobe".

Thanks for co-ordinating Brian.

Thank you. They are a sight to see.

http://www.ncwildhorses.com/corolla.htm

I'm going down there again NEXT Wednesday, 15 Aug. Full moon rises about 10
minutes before sunset.

When I went down there in July, I didn't know you needed a parking permit for
the beach (Friday before Memorial Day thru Labor Day). The office that issues
the permits closes at 5:00pm local time. I got there at 5:30pm, so I wasn't
allowed to get out of the car to get a better angle.

Now I know.

I'll do a better job next time. I'll get there before the office closes and get
a parking permit. I'll be able to get out of the car, walk around to frame them
with the sunset and with the full moon.

The horses are amazing. They're descended from Spanish Colonial Mustangs
abandoned along the outer banks and/or horses that managed to swim ashore from
Spanish shipwrecks on the shoals off of Cape Fear and Cape Hatteras.

North Carolina has been struggling to protect them since the 1980s.

When the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1984, the U.S.
Fish & Wildlife Service labeled them an invasive species (even though they've
been there since the 1500s, predating the USF by 350+ years) and wants to
exterminate them.

North Carolina Congressional Representatives have repeatedly introduced a bill
for protection of the wild horses on Currituck Banks

My favourites in no particular order: Jay Taylor's Last Stop, Rick Womer's

Thanks Dan, sorry for the late reply, life is hectic at present.

It was the only image I'd taken recently that fitted the theme. Of course,
as the deadline passed I took a few different ones, one of which I'd
probably have submitted instead. That's photography for you.

Ken Waller's "Daybreak" is my favorite. The rhythm of the repeating
patterns is the water is mesmerizing, and the diagonal compositions grabs
and hold the eye. The sunrise colors are enhanced by the dark brooding
mountains beneath them, and the wake of the boar in the lower right gives
the sense of motion through the tranquility of the scene.

I was fascinated by Malcolm's "Long Shadow," since I have taken a number of
macroscian images. This one works quite well, to my eye.

Another nice gallery! A lot of top tier images including Ann's Tulip,
Don's Simply Small, Jack's Coos Dasies (which looks like it could
have been the cover image for Peterson's Photographic magazine, which
I loved back in my high school days), Joseph's Moon and Venus (it's
not unusual for Venus to be in crescent, but it is unusual to be able
to expose it properly - especially with the moon - and have a lens
that can resolve it properly... well done!), and Pat's Foggy Beach.
My two MOST favorite images were Ken's Reeds and Brian's Yellow on
Blue. The image of that boat on the water is the one that lingers the
longest in my mind's eye after leaving the gallery.

August PUG is UP!

2015-08-09 Thread Brian Walters
G'day all,

Another good sized gallery with some interesting interpretations of the
theme.

My top three are Ann's 'Tulip Blossom' - both simple and elegant; Stan's
'Beach Stone' - sums up the theme well; and Joe's 'Moon and Venus -
that's a stunner!.

Ok, OK - let's have another couple... Bruce's 'Queen Anne's Lace' -
love those shadows and Ken's 'Reeds' - seen it before and it still grabs
me.

You'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery
there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

Re: August PUG is UP!

Another great gallery! Congratulations to all the contributors; all
of the entries are fine standing alone but as a collection, the
gallery is impressive indeed.

Thanks again, Brian, for all your efforts and skill in continuing this
monthly project that does a lot to make this group what it is.

My personal favorite is Foggy Beach,: by Pat Temmerman. It is
visually stunning by any measure, and it certainly fits the theme
quite well.

Others that stand out from the crowd in my eyes are Stan Halpin's
Beach Stone, Ken Waller's Reeds, and Rick Wormer's Red and
Window.
