Thanks for your commentary Cotty. Meg’s grandmother (from Cornwall) was a
staunch Royalist and the attitude was passed down; I tend to be more interested
in who the person is than in the office or position they hold.

And thanks for the update on Stefan! I remember meeting him with you and Bob at

Give him regards from this side of the pond.

Filmed her many times over the years, she always seemed very pleasant. Of
course she would never acknowledge us mere mortals with cameras! Did however
meet the king (as Prince of Wales) in 2018. I was commissioned by Associated
Press to film his Easter message to the Commonwealth. Stefan was with me as a
second camera. There was about a dozen people in the room we had set up in 2
hours before. We had to be lined up to greet him when he came in and I was told
to stand nearest the door. In he came rubbing his hands together with a broad
smile and I was introduced to him. Shook hands and his aide said Steve is the
cameraman sir, to which he replied ‘Oh you’re the cameraman! Well it’s a bloody
good job you’re here then isn’t it!’ and roared with laughter. He then met Stef
and the reporting team.

He gave his address to camera (using a teleprompter - a screen in front of the
lens with his speech scrolling on it) in one perfect take. The plan was to then
re-set for a one-to-one interview with an AP reporter, with mine and Stef’s
cameras covering. The aide whispered in his ear and he looked at his watch and
with a cheery wave to us all and was gone!

I’m no royalist - I tolerate them. To be fair Charles does have a good attitude
to things of an ecological nature. They’re too embedded in our society and we
have no lust for change as a country, so they stay on. Maybe during the next
civil war!

It was about 1/4- then, I think. That’s 1s and 4d, not a farthing!

Incidentally one of the papers pointed out that we will once again start having
notes and coins with different sovereigns on, which we haven’t had since
decimalisation in 1974. So people younger than about 50 haven’t seen
mixed-sovereign currency before - something I’d never thought about. When I
were a lad we had coins in our pockets with the head of Victoria on.

Re: OT: For the list members in the UK

2022-09-05 Thread Bob Pdml
Er, no we haven’t and no it isn’t.

141,725 people from a party membership of 172,437 voted for one of two
candidates chosen by the party’s MPs. Of those 141,725 people only 56% voted
for her. So about 80,000 people in a population of about 47 million who can
vote in a general election.

Fewer than half of her party’s MPs voted for her, so she doesn’t even command
her own party in parliament. Some of them are already talking about getting rid
of her before the next scheduled general election, in 2024.

She herself has never achieved anything politically, except to become leader of
her party, and that only because she has the support of the ultra right wing
disaster capitalists, who are like hyenas, except that I quite like hyenas.

Like the Republicans in the USA the Tories here never cease to amaze by their
ability to find ever worse, more extreme scumbags to be their party leader.

OT: For the list members in the UK

2022-09-05 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I see you have elected a new Prime Minister.

Politics aside, I suspect the uncertainty of the past several months has
been troublesome, and hopefully is at an end.

Stiff upper lip, olc chaps!
