Re: PESO: Bellbird

2024-05-12 Thread Alan C
So there is no problem with camera shake. I still use the Jack Davis
formula TAV, 1/2000sec, f8 with my 170-500 for H/H at full stretch but
still, like you, I find the AF screw drive somewhat lacking & seldom
manage successful quick grabs. Too much glass for quick focus. The new
PLM's are greased lightning by comparison but my budget won't stretch
that far.  I get a success rate of only about 10% shooting aerobatics.
Thank goodness for digital. My 55-300 behaves much better.

It is, although I do struggle with it at times. When the AF gets it right I
get some great images. I was lucky with this one as I'd been in such a hurry
I'd forgotten to pay attention to the settings and it shot at f/6.7 so depth of
field was not in my favour.

I remember trying to calibrate the focus of my lenses soon after getting the
K5ii but gave up as the AF system just wouldn't quite focus consistently. If I
focused on the target a few times in a row it'd always come out slightly
different, which made me wonder what was the point of calibrating it. I seem
to remember my target wasn't perfect but I never quite got around to having
another go with a better one. I do wonder it if's simply a mechanical
limitation of the screw-drive mechanism.

We've had at least one bellbird in the area visiting our garden but they're
very difficult to photograph. They're quite skittish and don't stop moving.
They'd be a similar size to a starling.

I saw one feeding at the bottom of our garden this morning and rushed to get
the camera. This is about all I could get before he flew off. I'll keep
trying...

One of the greatest sounds I've ever heard was when we had to stop for some
road works when travelling north a couple of years ago. We were in a small
valley of native beech forest and there were dozens of bellbirds in the area
feasting on honeydew while singing merrily. We weren't in any hurry to get
moving again.

I heard him this morning but he was gone before I even looked up. I have the
camera at the ready in case I see him again in good light.
