North Carolina's is copper. They had to replace part of it several years
ago it took a long time for the new part to weather to the same shade
of green as the old part.

Let's not let this happen. One of the strengths of the PDML over its history
is an acceptance of whatever each photographer is trying to do, and I hope
we don't go the way of too many clubs and communities, where all the
photographs end up looking the same.

Even if we don't care for a style or school of photography, it is required
of us all to respect the other photographers and judge each submitted image
in its own context. I don't care if Eggleston himself tosses us a link and
you hate everything he does; you comment on whether that particular image
works or doesn't work, if you care to comment at all, with the care and
courtesy you expect when you post your own photos.

At the same time, I will, and I will expect others to do the same, fight
unto death for your right to follow whatever photographic trail you wish to
tread. I know I said earlier that Eggleston's work touches me more than
flower photos do. That doesn't mean I don't like flower photos; I always
enjoy a good one. I'm just at a point in my viewing life that interesting
holds my interest a bit more.

If you love flower/cat/puppy/sunset photography, then by golly do it, and do
it as well as you can, and push yourself to do it even better. Be proud of
what you do, and as you grow we will all applaud you. Whatever your subject,
do it to the best of your abilities.

But remember as well that there are photographers on the list who do shoot
other things, in other styles, and they deserve the same encouragement, the
same respect. The fact that most of us shoot with Pentax doesn't mean we all
have the same subjects or methods for expressing/describing those subjects.

I'm not saying you can't have your preferences or your opinions. You
certainly can. But let's not let the volume of your bias drown out the other
 voices.

Bruce, that's a heck of a photo. I've always admired your light sense.

I like it Bruce but looking at it critically on my colour balanced

been forsaken to preserve the yellow in the flower? Careful tuning
with curves could possibly provide a better light balance between the
background and the blossom.

OK, I wondered who would be the first to mention this. Good job, Bruce.

I'm clearly in the less popular, experimental camp, and from where I'm
sitting the majority prefers to think that pretty is the proper,
acceptable form of photography to be appreciated on the PDML.

Let's not let this happen. One of the strengths of the PDML over its
history is an acceptance of whatever each photographer is trying to do,
and I hope we don't go the way of too many clubs and communities, where
all the photographs end up looking the same.

Even if we don't care for a style or school of photography, it is
required of us all to respect the other photographers and judge each
submitted image in its own context. I don't care if Eggleston himself
tosses us a link and you hate everything he does; you comment on whether
that particular image works or doesn't work, if you care to comment at
all, with the care and courtesy you expect when you post your own photos.

At the same time, I will, and I will expect others to do the same, fight
unto death for your right to follow whatever photographic trail you wish
to tread. I know I said earlier that Eggleston's work touches me more
than flower photos do. That doesn't mean I don't like flower photos; I
always enjoy a good one. I'm just at a point in my viewing life that
interesting holds my interest a bit more.

If you love flower/cat/puppy/sunset photography, then by golly do it,
and do it as well as you can, and push yourself to do it even better. Be
proud of what you do, and as you grow we will all applaud you. Whatever
your subject, do it to the best of your abilities.

But remember as well that there are photographers on the list who do
shoot other things, in other styles, and they deserve the same
encouragement, the same respect. The fact that most of us shoot with
Pentax doesn't mean we all have the same subjects or methods for
expressing/describing those subjects.

I'm not saying you can't have your preferences or your opinions. You
certainly can. But let's not let the volume of your bias drown out the
other voices.

Bruce, that's a heck of a photo. I've always admired your light sense.

If I were making the image, I think I'd want:

fill on that one flower down in the shadow under the poppy (do I
correctly recognize it is a poppy?);

a tiny bit more DoF to smooth the transition into the background;

and I'd try to do something about that one OOF stem that appears in the
foreground.

Hear, Hear, Doug. When I was looking for camera clubs in the area, I found
some that suffer from what Doug DOESN'T WANT US TO BECOME--and I don't want
to PDML to become that either. We should continue to be what we have
been--a diverse group of photographers honing our skills and nurturing our
individual photographic visions of choice. PDML is savvy, skilled, and
smart enough to critique a broad range of photographic genres. Cheers,

RE: PESO- Gold

2010-05-11 Thread John Coyle
When I was in banking in the UK, written contracts had to have affixed a
revenue stamp based on the value of the contract, which we bought from the
local Post Office. A favourite trick on new junior clerks was to send them
to the P O for a 'stamp on a verbal agreement'. We had a deal with the
clerks there that when our junior appeared and asked for one, the clerk
would search through his/her till, shake their head regretfully and say,
Sorry, we're out of those, you'll have to go to Mile End post office.
That, of course, was when the now concerned junior came back to the bank to
ask for fares to get to the post office: to the amusement of the assembled
staff, who would then ask him to what he was going to stick the stamp. It
was usually then that realisation dawned...

I'm a little confused about the context.
Is this a railing to keep you from falling off of something?
It looks like it casts shadows on a wall right behind it.
I have trouble imagining how this space goes together.

that this is to cover up the fact that the actual software is just as
terrible, but I'm not sure yet.

This was taken inside a former bank building in the Asia District of Oklahoma

picture is of the railing going around the second floor.

 Regards, Bob S.

The first floor of the building is a big open area. There is a balcony-type
walkway running around this big area on the second floor. The railing keeps you
from falling off the walkway.

The shadows that you see don't fall on a wall, they fall on a panel which is
part of the railing itself. These panels are the same color as the wall, which
confuses things. The light pieces of wood are the top and bottom of the panel.
The art piece in the top left part of the picture is about 8 feet behind the
railing.

It is very dim inside the building, and I didn't have a tripod. So what I did
was set my camera on the ground, peeking through the railing below the panel.
It does throw off the perspective. I should probably carry a tripod.

Thank you for your comment. It really helped me look at the picture in a
different way.

Re: PESO: Gold in my backyard

2006-06-18 Thread Paul Stenquist
No, the A2X-S, like the A2X-L has only the A contacts. Mine has a
damaged lock pin. The spring has evidently become unattached, so it
won't lock on the lens. It still works fine as long as I make sure the
lens is all the way engaged. But I almost dropped my A400 yesterday,
when it spun off the converter. Luckily, I caught it with my other hand
about halfway to the floor. Close call. I think I'll take the converter
to my local repair guy and see if he can fix it. They used to be quite
expensive. It has seven elements, so it's a rather sophisticated optic.

You may recall I put up a trap focus frozen finch image several
months back. Same shape feeder used, but made of screen wire rather
than what appears to be plastic. Thistle seeds pulled through the
screen at a surprising rate. Have counted up to 10 finches on the
feeder at the same time.
Interesting pose. Soft somewhat grainy texture..a matter of style.

A friend gave me a goldfinch feeder and a bag of thistle seed. The
feeder requires the birds to eat hanging upside down. Apparently,
goldfinches are among the few species that can do this. After a few
weeks, I now have a flock of goldfinches that visits on a regular
basis. They're very small and easily spooked. They don't seem to
 alight
on branches near the feeder, so natural shots are not likely. So
today I set up the *istD with the A400/5.6 and the A2XS converter. I
attached a remote shutter release, so I could shoot down to 1/90th or

so. I think this was at 5.6 @ 1/90th, ISO 400. It's cropped to about
half the frame. On the tripod of course.

Yes, it's a little grainy. I misspoke below. It was actually ISO 800
and cropped. The feeder this shaded by a tree. Not a lot of light. I
needed 800 just to get 1/90th shutter. Since I'm using the A2XS
converter, the working stop is f11 wide open on my A 400 5.6.
