Abstract: This presentation explores the meaning and scope of the love
commandments, especially the second, telling us to love our neighbors as
ourselves. What kind of relation to God is appropriate to the command to
love God with all our heart, soul, and mind? If, as is plausible, what is
commanded can be intended, what is intended is action, and love is not an
action or under direct positive voluntary control, how can love be
commanded? If love really is impossible to achieve at will and cannot be
directly commanded, what kinds of acts are appropriate to carrying out the
two commandments? This question is important not only theologically (and
not only for Christianity), but also for understanding moral obligation in
general. With that in mind, Kant’s categorical imperative, in its Formula
of Humanity version—requiring us to treat persons as ends in themselves and
never merely as means—will be briefly examined.

[PEIRCE-L] Sensible Animism: The Logic and Religion Webinar, Feb 22 (Thursday)

2024-02-21 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
 Dear Colleague,

You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion
Webinar Series which will be held on February 22 (THIS THURSDAY), 2024, at 4 pm
CET with the topic:

SENSIBLE ANIMISM
Speaker: Evan Fales (The

Chair: Assis Mariano (University of
Missouri-Columbia, USA)

Abstract: Not uncommonly, modern reflection on “primitive” tribal religions
(sometimes labelled ‘animist’) has concluded that, in one way or another, such
religions are grounded in irrational cognitive processes, in contrast to the
sophisticated thought that characterizes the theologies of advanced religions.
Is this a fair judgment? Or does it reflect a fundamental failure to grasp the
ontological underpinnings of primitive theologies? I’ll argue for the latter,
and that a different approach suggests not only rational but sophisticated
thinking. My argument proceeds, from a strong principle of interpretive
charity and analysis of the ontology of social realities, to this proposal.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

Divinity in some theistic (or theistically inclined) Indian religions is
often conceived monotheistically, as a supreme OmniGod (much like in
Western accounts of God). Monotheistic conceptions of God occur in Śaivism,
Śaktism, Vaiṣṇavism, Sikhism as well as Indian reiterations of Islam,
Christianity and Zoroastrianism. There are also arguably monotheistic
concepts of God given by the Indian philosophical schools (darṣanas), such
as Vedānta, Nyāya, Mīmāṃsā, and Yoga.

Despite the evidence for a general Indian religious disposition towards
monotheism, Indian concepts of God can exhibit certain peculiarities that
distance them from the traditional idea of monotheism. For example, some
Indian conceptions of God revolve around God’s being united with the world
and finite conscious beings in various ways. This is the heart of the
famous Vedānta debate about the relationship between Brahman - the ultimate
conscious reality - and the rest of existence, and of a wide variety of
theistic views on the relation between ultimate conscious reality and the
world. Interpretations range through idealism, qualified monism, dualism,
and a mixture of monism and dualism (as in the different theories of
bhedābheda, or difference and non-difference).

The reference to consciousness (in the expressions “conscious beings” and
“ultimate conscious reality”) is not gratuitous. Philosophical Indian
traditions such as Vedānta and Sāṅkhya have developed sophisticated
ontological views on consciousness. These views have strongly influenced
and been influenced by Indian theistic traditions. For example, in the
Bhavagad Gītā - a key Vedānta text strongly informed by Sāṅkhya (or
proto-Sāṅkhya) thought - matter is seemingly given a cognitive aspect that
somehow intermediates the conscious experience of ordinary living beings.
But the Gītā also says that God is the source (prabhava) of consciousness
and matter. While matter and consciousness are fundamental aspects of
reality, in God they have a common ontological ground. Depending on how a
specific theistic tradition interprets this, its concept of God might imply
some kind of theory of consciousness.

Against this background, two sets of questions arise, which in current
debates are often overlooked or are only partially addressed. The first
relates to the nature and tenability of concepts of God; the second
concerns the nature of consciousness. On the first set of questions, one
might ask:

- Can certain concepts of God in Indian traditions really be regarded
monotheistic in the Western sense of the term?

- Or are they closer to panentheism, theistic pantheism, henotheism or
polytheism?

- What divine properties do the traditions ascribe to their respective
divinity or sets of divinity?

- Can the corresponding concepts of God be described in a consistent way?

- Is it sensible to presuppose that they should be describable in such a
way?

- Do any of these concepts of God possess an advantage over Western
philosophical accounts of God?

On the second set of questions, it could be asked:

- Which views on consciousness are presupposed by Indian concepts of God?

- How can these views be philosophically articulated?

- What are their advantages and disadvantages compared to standard accounts
of consciousness found in Western analytical philosophy?

- Furthermore, are these accounts compatible with a scientific worldview?

- Can the concept of God contribute to a scientifically consistent theory
of consciousness?

[PEIRCE-L] Mozi’s Philosophy of Universal Love and Analogical Reasoning: The Logic and Religion Webinar, Dec 14 (Thursday)

2023-12-13 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
Dear Colleague,

You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion
Webinar Series which will be held on December 14 (THIS THURSDAY), 2023, at 4pm
CET with the topic:

Mozi’s Philosophy of Universal Love and Analogical Reasoning
Speaker: Caroline Pires

of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil)
Chair: Jean-Yves Beziau (Federal University of Rio
de Janeiro, Brazil)

Please, register to receive a zoom link:

Abstract: The forthcoming exposition delves into Mozi’s philosophy of Universal
Love (兼愛, jian'ai) and its profound impact on Chinese civilization. Mozi (墨子,
c. 470 BCE – c. 391 BCE) is a leading light in Chinese philosophical discourse
of his time. At the heart of his idea lies the notion of impartial care,
advocating that all human endeavors ought to originate from an unwavering
foundation of undistinguished concern. This doctrine is instrumental in shaping
a distinctive ethos grounded in the ethical and political aspirations for
societal enhancement. Unbiased love becomes fundamental to his intellectual
framework, acting as the benchmark for all logical actions. As Chinese
philosophical traditions began engaging with Western thought in recent times,
Mohist reasoning experienced a revival, reinforcing the notion that Chinese
philosophical traditions also possess an analytical inclination. Our goal in
this talk is to explain how Mozi's understanding of love embodies an idea of
benevolence rooted in a rigorous epistemological construct.

[PEIRCE-L] Second Call for Small Grant Proposals: God and Consciousness in Indian Traditions

2023-12-12 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
*Please circulate widely. Apologies for multiple emails.*

*SECOND CALL FOR SMALL GRANT PROPOSALS: PAPER INCUBATOR*

*Deadline*: January 5, 2024

*Website*: www.god-and-consciousness.com/grants

The project Concepts of God and the Variety of Theisms in Indian
Traditions: Towards a Theistic Theory of Consciousness
is an initiative that has as
general goals (1) to philosophically reconstruct concepts of God in Indian
theistic (or theistically inclined) traditions, namely from Vaishnava,
Shaiva, Shakti, indigenous or other religious perspectives on the
subcontinent, and (2) to investigate the extent to which issues explored by
such traditions can contribute to the philosophy of consciousness. It is
supported by funding totaling $260,000 from the John Templeton Foundation

.

As part of the project, we will organize a paper incubator
: a systemized and sponsored
mentorship program designed to help junior and mid-career philosophers and
scholars of Indian studies to develop submitted papers proposals into
publishable articles. Each selected researcher will work in cooperation
with a tutor, who will help the candidate transform their text into a
high-quality publishable article. Each successful applicant will
receive a *grant
of 3,000 USD*. They will have 18 months to write their article, which must
be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal. Each researcher must present their
work in at least one of our three conferences
 (a bonus of *1,000
USD* will
be given to those who attend the conference in person). The grant will be
awarded through bank transfer, on which bank and federal revenue fees may
apply.

Proposals must be written in English in the form of an extended abstract of
a maximum of 2,000 words, clearly describing (1) the problem that will be
addressed, (2) the context in which the problem has been approached
(preferably through a brief literary review), (3) the goal of the paper,
and (4) the way the proponent wants to achieve this goal. The proposal
should also contain (5) a list with the relevant bibliography. The general
intended approach must be consistent with analytic philosophy of religion.
Proposals must address some of the questions and general goals
 of the project.
Applicants must be PhD candidates, or have completed their PhD within a
maximum of 6 years. We welcome proposals both from philosophers and Indian
Studies scholars. The proposal must be sent along with a summarized CV of
the applicant to god.and.consciousn...@gmail.com by January 5, 2024. The
list of selected proposals will be posted on the website on January 15,
2024.

[PEIRCE-L] All-Pervading Transcendent God: The Logic and Religion Webinar, Nov 16 (Thursday)

ALL PERVADING TRANSCENDENT GOD: Omnipresence, Mereology, & Simplicity

Speaker: Aaron Cotnoir
(University of St Andrews, UK)

Chair: Daniel Molto
(University of Sussex, UK)

Please, register to receive a zoom link:

Abstract: Mereological Harmony principles necessitate that any entity occupying
a complex location must have parts located there. These principles can conflict
with an omnipresent simple God. This paper lists potential sources of conflict,
showing how most occupation-based accounts of omnipresence must reject Harmony.
I then outline a new occupation-based theory that completely avoids such
conflicts. The central idea --- motivated by divine transcendence and immensity
-- is God's all-pervading transcendence: God is weakly located everywhere but
lacks any exact or entire location in spacetime.

attributes of the Supreme Being of Yoruba-diasporic traditions and see if this
explains the inexistence of the problem of evil in Candomblé; and second, by so
doing, to call attention to how myths can enrich and be instrumental to the
philosophy of religion—especially in contexts in which other sources are
sparse. Moreover, I’d like to take this opportunity to exemplify that we can
shed light on neglected traditions by trying to figure out why these problems
are not raised within them—rather than trying to make a tradition fit the
classical problems formulated by an overwhelmingly theistic (and more
specifically, Christian) philosophy of religion.

[PEIRCE-L] Contradiction in Islamic Philosophy and Mysticism: The Logic and Religion Webinar

2023-08-16 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
Dear Colleague,

You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion
Webinar Series which will be held on August 17, 2023, at 4pm CET with the topic:

Contradiction in Islamic Philosophy and Mysticism
Speaker: Mohammad Jafar Jame Bozorgi (Iranian Institute of Philosophy, Iran)
Chair: Ali Sadegh Daghighi (Iranian Institute of Philosophy, Iran)

Please check the link to register and receive a zoom link:
https://www.logicandreligion.com/webinars

Abstract: In their works, Graham Priest and Richard Routley try to show a kind
of refusal to deny the contradiction and even display the truth of some of
them. According to them, dialetheism is a reaction against philosophical
systems whose goal has always been to build impenetrable and rigid forms and
frameworks. But what is the opinion of Islamic philosophy? In Islamic
philosophy and mysticism, especially in Ibn Arabi's mysticism and Mulla Sadra's
philosophy, there are doctrines and theories that have caused some philosophers
to suspect that they are contradictory. In this lecture, I will show that
theories such as the Unity of Existence, the Plurality of Divine Names and
Attributes, the Ontological Foundation of Existence, the Substantive Movement,
etc., do not correspond to dialetheism. Although Mulla Sadra's theory of the
Substantive Movement denies any fixed nature for the object, there is a great
difference between the negation of the quiddity and the denial of the
originality of the quiddity.

[PEIRCE-L] DIALETHEISM AND THE INEFFABILITY OF GOD - GRAHAM PRIEST: The Logic and Religion Webinar

2023-07-05 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
Dear Colleague,

You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and
Religion Webinar Series which will be held on *July 6, 2023*, at *4pm CET* with
the topic:

*The Ultimate-Unspeakable Paradox and The Principle of Non-Contradiction*

Speaker: Bo Mou (San José State
University, USA)

Chair: *Ricardo Silvestre
* (Federal
University of Campina Grande, Brazil)

Please check the link to register and recieve a zoom link:

Abstract: Can we talk about the Ultimate (like the ultimate God or the
ultimate reality Dao) with its contradictory features in a consistent way
as guided by a refined principle of non-contradiction? My goal in this
talk is to explain a refined principle of non-contradiction (PNC) from a
holistic “double-reference” vantage point. I also aim at capturing the
“double-reference” point of Lao Zi’s opening statements of the Dao-De-Jing
and the central point of Aristotle’s classical presentation of the PNC.
Dissolving the “Ultimate-unspeakable paradox”, the addressed refined PNC
can guide us to talk about real contradictions in the Ultimate in a
non-contradictory and insightful way. For a discussion of Lao Zi's relevant
ideas see chapter 6 of my 2018 book S*emantic-Truth Approaches in Chinese
Philosophy: A Unifying Pluralist Account
*.
For
the double-reference idea see section 3.2 of my paper *An enhanced account
of relative identity
*

[PEIRCE-L] DIALETHEISM AND THE INEFFABILITY OF GOD - GRAHAM PRIEST: The Logic and Religion Webinar

Dear Colleague,

Abstract: Many Christian philosophers have argued that God is ineffable. Of
course, in arguing for this, they talk about God. So God cannot be ineffable.
Call this the self-referential trap. One way out of the trap is to accept that
God is both effable and ineffable. It might be thought that such a view is
incoherent. But it can be shown to make perfectly good sense using the
techniques of paraconsistent logic. In this talk, I will show how.

Abstract: In this talk, I will provide a new response to the problem of
evil from an African perspective. I will argue that the notion of a God
that is conscious and intentional is mistaken. This is because these
attributes are not based on any concrete information about the nature of
God, and so are simply misattributions. Thus, I will argue for a new notion
of God as a material and depersonalised entity, therefore redefining the
African limited God view. I will also show that “evil” is merely a category
of the mind. Finally, I will show how these ideas make the problem of evil
irrelevant.

[PEIRCE-L] Indian Religions and the Concept of God: An Online Workshop, 13-14 Feb 2023, 9am CET (13 Feb only) and 3pm CET

*INDIAN RELIGIONS AND THE CONCEPT OF GOD*

*An Online Workshop*

Feb 13, 9:00-10:30am CET and 3:00-4:30pm CET.

Feb 14, 3:00-4:30pm CET

https://www.logicandreligion.com/vaishnava-concept-of-god

The purpose of the online workshop *INDIAN RELIGIONS AND THE CONCEPT OF GOD* is
to explore Indian concepts of God from a global philosophical perspective.
Accepting that there are different conceptions of divinity among the Indian
religious and philosophical traditions, we might pose the following
questions: How can these concepts of God be philosophically characterized?
Are the Indian traditions’ concepts of God really monotheistic in the
Western sense of the term? Or are they closer to panentheism, henotheism or
polytheism? What divine properties do the traditions ascribe to their
respective divinity? What is their relationship with Western philosophical
accounts of God? Each speaker in the workshop will explore a concept of God
in one of the main Indian traditions or texts.

The workshop will be held on Zoom. There will be no fee for participation.
Registration however will be required (via
www.logicandreligion.com/vaishnava-concept-of-god).

The workshop is part of “A Philosophical Approach to the Vaiṣṇava Concept
of God,” a project funded by the John Templeton Foundation through the
Global Philosophy of Religion Project, hosted by the University of
Birmingham (https://www.global-philosophy.org).

[PEIRCE-L] Two Types of the Critique of Religion: The Logic and Religion Webinar, January 12 - SPECIAL SESSION IN CELEBRATION OF THE WORLD LOGIC DAY 2023

2023-01-11 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
Dear Colleague,

You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion
Webinar Series which will be held on January 12, 2023, at 4pm CET with the
topic:

TWO TYPES OF CRITIQUE OF RELIGION
Speaker: Dieter Birnbacher (University of
Düsseldorf, Germany)
Chair: Jens Lemanski

(University of Hagen, Germany)

Please, register in advance to receive the zoom link:
https://www.logicandreligion.com/webinars

Abstract: The talk distinguishes three main directions in the philosophical
criticism of religion and exemplifies them by the critique of religion
contained in Schopenhauer’s Dialogue on religion: the inherent inability of
religions to reveal the mythical nature of the objects of religious worship;
the authoritarian nature of observing religious prescriptions; the allegation
that religion produces more evil than good. On the last point, however,
Schopenhauer is ambivalent: religion, to him, is the “philosophy of the masses”

[PEIRCE-L] The Two Natures of Christ: The Logic and Religion Webinar, December 15

2022-12-13 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
Dear Colleague,

You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion
Webinar Series which will be held on December 15, 2022, at 4pm CET with the
topic:

THE TWO NATURES OF CHRIST

Speaker: Eleonore Stump (Saint
Louis University, USA)

Chair: Michal Pawlowski
(University of Warsaw, Poland)

Please, register in advance to receive the zoom link:
https://www.logicandreligion.com/webinars

Abstract: The doctrine of the Incarnation is central to Christianity but it
seems self-inconsistent in virtue of attributing contradictory properties to
one and the same thing. I explore the notion of reduplicative propositions and
the concept of borrowed properties to examine this puzzle, and I argue on this
basis that the doctrine is coherent.

[PEIRCE-L] Special Issue on INDIAN RELIGIONS AND THE CONCEPT OF GOD: Last Call for Papers

2022-11-16 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
--- Last Call for Papers ---

*INDIAN RELIGIONS AND THE CONCEPT OF GOD*
Special Issue of SOPHIA: International Journal of Philosophy and Traditions
Guest editors: Ricardo Silvestre, Alan Herbert and Purushottama Bilimoria

Although Western philosophy of religion has developed many useful
exegetical and philosophical tools for evaluating Abrahamitic conceptions
of God as they apply to respective philosophical traditions, there is a
growing awareness that such monotheistic Western approaches might conceal
and prohibit a culturally sensitive and philosophically adequate
appreciation of the numerous concepts of God found in religious traditions
outside of the Western hemisphere. This awareness, which is part of the
motivation beyond what is known as cross-cultural philosophy of religion,
encompasses both the need for and the encouragement of new dialogues
between Western philosophy of religion and non-Western traditions as a
means to foster a deeper mutual understanding of the variety of concepts of
God or the divine developed in the history of humankind.

Divinity in some Indian religions, such as *Vaiṣṇavism*, *Śaivism* and
*Śaktism*, is often conceived monotheistically, as a supreme OmniGod (much
like Western accounts of God.) Despite the evidence supporting this, these
Indian concepts of God exhibit certain peculiarities that threaten the idea
of their being monotheistic (or even theistic, one might say.) For
instance, they manifest a plurality of divine forms, referred to as devatās
and avatāras (divinely incarnations), they subsequently assimilate or
incorporate other divinities in the Hindu pantheon and continue to exist in
ambiguous relationships with them (an example being those between Viṣṇu,
Śiva, Brahmā, and the Goddess), they are united with ordinary living beings
in various ways, and they sometimes possess (exude?) ultimately impersonal
or abstract nature. Moreover, in the Indian subcontinent, theistic
traditions have resided alongside those that are decidedly non-theistic
(for instance, Jain, Buddhist, and naturalist traditions), or
non-theistically inclined (such as Nyāya and perhaps Yoga within Hinduism),
and possibly a[mono]theistic (as in the Cārvāka and Mīmāṁsā schools) –
although concepts of divinity in all these traditions are up for debate.
Given all of this, we might ask: are Indian theistic traditions really
monotheistic? Or, to put it in conceptual terms, is their concept of God a
monotheistic one? Or, is their concept of divinity theistic at all?

Accepting that there are different conceptions of divinity among the Indian
religious and philosophical traditions, we are then behoved to pose this
question: *how can these concepts of God be philosophically
characterized?* What
divine properties does any given tradition ascribe to its divinity? Can
this divinity be described in a consistent way? Or is it a contradictory
concept? If the concept is contradictory, how would this affect its
intelligibility? Does any of those concepts of God have some advantage over
traditional philosophical accounts of God? How do they relate to well-known
accounts of God, such as those of classical theism, pantheism, panentheism,
process theism, open theism, etc.? And what are the difficulties peculiar
to these Indian concepts of God?

This special issue of Sophia: International Journal of Philosophy and
Traditions (https://www.springer.com/journal/11841) will address these
questions and approach the concept of God in Indian religions from a
contemporary philosophical perspective. We invite submissions of papers on
general philosophical topics related to Indian religions and the concept of
God, including but not restricted to the following themes:

- God in Indian religious traditions.
- Divine attributes and Indian concepts of divinity.
- Indian concepts of divinity vs. western concepts of God.
- Atheistic or agnostic arguments against the coherence of Indian concepts
of God.
- Vaiṣṇavism/Śaivism/Śaktism: monotheistic, panentheistic or what?
- Language and God in Indian traditions.
- Divinity and Hindu deities.
- Relation of the divine with the world: creation and
difference/non-difference.
- Consciousness and Indian concepts of divinity: cosmopsyshism,
panenpsychism or what?

Papers should be submitted through Sophia’s Editorial Manager (
https://www.springer.com/journal/11841/submission-guidelines) specifying
that they are being submitted to the special issue on Indian Religions and
the Concept of God, and obey Sophia's submission guidelines. Submitted
papers will go through a double-blind peer-review process. The deadline for
submission is November 30, 2022.

[PEIRCE-L] Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and Beliefs: The Logic and Religion Webinar, October 13

2022-10-12 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion
Webinar Series which will be held on October 13, 2022, at 4pm CET with the
topic:

Artificial Intelligence, Ethics, and Beliefs.
Speakers: Sara Lumbreras Sancho
(Comillas Pontifical University, Spain) and Mark
Graves (Center for Theology and
Natural Science, USA).
Chair: Andrea Vestrucci
 (University of
Bamberg, Germany, and Starr King School, USA)

Please register in advance!
https://www.logicandreligion.com/webinars

Abstract: This webinar will explore the connections between Artificial
Intelligence (AI), ethics, beliefs and spirituality. Sara Lumbreras will focus
on the differences between human belief as described in the Creditions model
proposed by Angel & Seiz, and current AI systems, rather than the ones
anticipated by transhumanist authors such as Kurzweil. These differences lead
to some AI models being more ethical than others and thus for an ethical basis
to build a better AI. Mark Graves will explore his recent work on AI
morality
 and spirituality. He
draws upon systems theory and Josiah Royce's pragmatic philosophy to describe a
structure for AI models compatible with human moral psychology and spirituality.

[PEIRCE-L] Scriptural Reasoning on Language and Ultimate Truth in an Indian Religious Tradition: The Logic and Religion Webinar, September 15

2022-09-13 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
 Dear Colleague,

You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion
Webinar Series which will be held on September 15, 2022, at 4pm CET with the
topic:

Scriptural Reasoning on Language and Ultimate Truth in an Indian Religious
Tradition.
Speaker: Kenneth R. Valpey (Oxford Centre for
Hindu Studies, UK).
Chair: Dragana Jagušić
(University of Rijeka, Croatia)

Please register in advance!
https://www.logicandreligion.com/webinars

Abstract: Conventional wisdom has it that language must ever fall short of
adequately expressing Ultimate Truth. Further, if the attempt is made to
describe Ultimate Truth in theistic terms, this simply confirms language’s
limits. Not so, claims the Vaishnava Hindu scripture, the Bhagavata Purana. In
this presentation I will sketch some ways the text makes its argument for
theistic ultimacy with language holding a key function in such realization. How
persuasive the Bhagavata’s argument can be regarded will depend—the text itself
suggests—on one’s predisposition to accept or not accept it ... and on divine
grace.

[PEIRCE-L] Mathematical Models in Theology. Are They Helpful? The Logic and Religion Webinar, August 18

Speaker Stanisław
Krajewski (University

Chair: Ali Sadegh Daghighi (Institute for
Interdisciplinary Research in Fundamental Sciences, Iran).

 Please register in advance!

Abstract: We will begin by reviewing some mathematical illustrations of
religious concepts, both old, for example by Cusanus, and a few new
mathematical models in theology. The problem is how helpful they are. They can
illustrate ideas, but remain metaphorical pictures assisting our imagination
and attempts to deal with paradoxical situations. The deeper problem is whether
they can model divine realms in a way that would suggest new insights as it is
possible in the case of math models in natural sciences.

*INDIAN RELIGIONS AND THE CONCEPT OF GOD*
Special Issue of Sophia: International Journal of Philosophy and Traditions

Although Western philosophy of religion has developed many useful
exegetical and philosophical tools for evaluating Abrahamitic conceptions
of God as they apply to respective philosophical traditions, there is a
growing awareness that such monotheistic Western approaches might conceal
and prohibit a culturally sensitive and philosophically adequate
appreciation of the numerous concepts of God found in religious traditions

motivation beyond what is known as cross-cultural philosophy of religion,
encompasses both the need for and the encouragement of new dialogues
between Western philosophy of religion and non-Western traditions as a
means to foster a deeper mutual understanding of the variety of concepts of
God or the divine developed in the history of humankind.

Papers should be submitted through Sophia’s Editorial Manager (
https://www.editorialmanager.com/soph/default1.aspx) specifying that they
are being submitted to the special issue on Indian Religions and the
Concept of God, and obey Sophia's submission guidelines (
https://www.springer.com/journal/11841/submission-guidelines). Submitted
papers will go through a double-blind peer-review process. The deadline for
submission is November 30, 2022.

Abstract: Why did Jesus teach so much in parables? These parables usually
have clear explanations but why not simply teach the explanations, given
the risk of misinterpretation? In this presentation, I share new insights
from neuroscience that have highlighted the ancient distinction between
knowledge and understanding (intellectus/nous), a distinction that is at
the heart of so many challenges to Artificial Intelligence. I further argue
that understanding is communicated in a privileged manner by means of
metaphor and narrative. On this account, parables are not merely convenient
but may be indispensable for offering the understanding upon which
knowledge and wisdom are based.

Abstract: In 2014, Petr Dvořák put forward a hypothesis about structural
convergence of two cosmological arguments: by Avicenna and Bolzano. Indeed,
both arguments are based on the notion of the whole (totum) of all
contingent/conditioned individuals, different from the notion of the
classical set containing them. However, the authors differ in their
attitude to the impossibility of regress ad infinitum. Our goal is to
reconstruct Avicenna's argument on the basis of modern unitary theory of
sets and individuals and compare this reconstruction with the Bolzano’s
argument already expressed in the same formal frame. The lecture will be
followed by the talk "God and Timeless Cognition", by Michał Pawłowski and
Bartosz Wesół, the winners of the second Kurt Gödel Award 2021.

[PEIRCE-L] God and Vaiṣṇavism: An Online Workshop, 23-26 May 2022, 3pm CEST

2022-05-20 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
*God and Vaiṣṇavism*

An Online Workshop

23-26 May 2022. 3.00-5.30pm CEST

www.logicandreligion.com/vaishnava-concept-of-god

Although Western philosophy of religion has developed many useful
exegetical and philosophical tools for evaluating Abrahamitic conceptions
of God as they apply to respective philosophical traditions, there is a
growing awareness that such monotheistic Western approaches might conceal
and prohibit a culturally sensitive and philosophically adequate
appreciation of the numerous concepts of God found in religious traditions
outside of the Western hemisphere. Vaiṣṇavism is commonly referred to as
one of the great Hindu monotheistic traditions. Besides often being
considered monotheistic, the concept of God in Vaiṣṇavism is also
frequently depicted in terms of divine attributes, which are traditionally
associated with a set of approaches philosophers nowadays describe as
classical theism and perfect being theology.

The purpose of the online *workshop God and Vaiṣṇavism* is to locate the
Vaiṣṇava concept of God within a global philosophical framework. Each
speaker in the workshop will explore a concept of God in one of the main
Vaiṣṇava traditions or texts. The main question to be asked is: What is the
Vaiṣṇava concept of God? Or more specifically: *What attributes does God
possess according to particular textual sources and traditions in
Vaiṣṇavism?*

The workshop will be held on Zoom. There will be no fee for participation.
*Registration* however will be required. Please register on the site:

Abstract: Several emendations of Gödel's modal ontological argument have
been proposed persevering the intended conclusion of God's necessary
existence while avoiding the problem of modal collapse, which expresses
that there are no contingent truths (everything is determined, there is no
free will). In this webinar, we summarize recent computer-supported
verification studies on some of these modern variants of the ontological
argument. Our purpose is to provide further evidence that the interaction
with computer technology can not only enable the formal assessment of
ontological arguments but can, in fact, help to sharpen our conceptual
understanding of the notions and concepts involved.

[PEIRCE-L] Theist and Atheist Arguments in Indian Philosophy: The Logic and Religion Webinar, April 14

Abstract: For a long time, philosophers have been proposing arguments to
prove or to deny the existence of God. This attitude can be witnessed in
western philosophy as well as in Indian Philosophy. In Indian philosophy,
the theist arguments are put forward mainly by the Nyāya Vaiśeṣika school.
Only a few arguments are proposed by the Yoga Philosophers. But if there is
a debate between the theist and atheist, the onus is on the theist to prove
God's existence. The atheist only has to show that the arguments are not
capable of proving the existence of God conclusively. This is the dominant
attitude in Indian Philosophy. The Cārvāka, the Buddhists, the Jainas, the
Sāṅkhyas, and even the Mīmāṁsakas and the Vedāntins have put forward
atheist arguments to prove the incapability of the theist arguments in
proving the existence of God. In this webinar, I would try to evaluate the
arguments from both sides as presented by Indian philosophers.

[PEIRCE-L] Panentheism and Panpsychism: The Logic and Religion Webinar, March 17

2022-03-15 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
Dear Colleague,

You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion
Webinar Series which will be held on March 17, 2022, at 4pm CET with the topic:

Panentheism and Panpsychism: Are they Interrelated? Responses from Indian and
Comparative Philosophy of Religion.
Speaker: Purushottama Bilimoria (University of Melbourne, Australia; San
Francisco State University, USA; RUDN University, Russia)
Chair: Anand Vaidya (San José State University, USA).

Please register in advance!
https://www.logicandreligion.com/webinars

Abstract: There has been of late a wave of interest in panentheism, which is
pertinent to religious philosophies of both the Western and Eastern traditions.
The dominant contemporary descriptions of panentheism however appear to be
biased toward theistic presuppositions – the Missing God help, even toward
monotheism! Here I offer an alternative account, paying heed to the term’s
etymology, and the concept’s roots in Indian religions, with its close
counterparts in pantheism and polytheism. I next turn to panpsychism and
explore various approaches to this thesis, with particular reference to certain
conceptual problems (such as the ‘binding issue’) that have been raised in
recent literature. I then draw on Indian theories to address this problem,
particularly from the Viśiṣtādvaita, Sāṃkhya and Jaina philosophical systems.
The principal concern in the second part will be on the question of the kind of
– if any – relation that can be drawn between pantheism and panpsychism: is
there a necessary connection? Even so, could it be that certain forms of
panentheism entail a version of panpsychism (or the converse); or, to put it
another way (a thesis I will propose and defend), that panentheism without
panpsychism (of a particular kind) is blind, and panpsychism without
panentheism (of a particular kind) is empty.

Abstract: Paradise is a famous notion in many religions. It may have
different names and may come with different related notions. As a
substantive, it is considered as a place whose location is not clearly
known, nor the way to access it. There is also the qualitative
“paradisiacal”, which applies to many situations and can be related to
different states of mind (happiness, delightedness, hope, joy, confidence).
The aim of this webinar is to study the logical aspects of paradise and
paradisiacality.

[PEIRCE-L] THE LOGIC OF BIBLICAL LOVE - The Logic and Religion Webinar, January 13

2022-01-12 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
Dear Colleague,

You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion
Webinar Series which will be held on January 13, 2022 at 4pm CET with the topic:

THE LOGIC OF BIBLICAL LOVE
Speaker: Kelly Clark (Grand Valley State University, USA)
Chair: Francisco de Assis Mariano (University of Missouri-Columbia, USA)

Please register in advance!

https://www.logicandreligion.com/webinars

Abstract: The logic of Christian love seems simple: we should love like God.
Yet the abstract and eternal God of Christian tradition—for example, God as
impassible and unchanging—is ill-suited to understanding human love. Moreover,
the biblical texts represent God in very human terms. I argue that we should
embrace these human and earthy textual metaphors when it comes to understanding
human love. Through proclamation, prescription, and example, the highest form
of human-human love emerges from the biblical texts: (a) God insists that we
act for the good of all humans, and (b) the transformed Heart of the Lover
insists on acting for the good of others. Biblical love of others is, first
(but lowest), benevolence—acting for the good of others and, second (and
highest), compassion--empathy-motivated self-sacrificial action. While we
typically start with benevolence, God seeks to transform us into lovers that
care for the oppressed and so are moved to act. Christian love, which unites
the proper feelings-motives-actions, requires a thorough understanding of the
proper relationship and role specific feelings, motives and actions. As such,
Biblical love does not come in three or four flavors—agape, eros and philia
(and/or storge)—it comes in countless flavors. Finally, and time permitting, I
will situate this biblical conception of love within a broader Abrahamic
context. I deconstruct the pernicious myth that Jewish Love is restricted to
Israel (tribalism), Muslim Love reduces to justice (no love), but, for
Christians, God is (universal and agapeic) Love.

[PEIRCE-L] LOGIC AND THE CONCEPT OF GOD The Logic and Religion Webinar, December 16

Dear Colleague,

LOGIC AND THE CONCEPT OF GOD

Speaker: Graham Oppy (Monash University, Australia)

Chair: Ricardo Silvestre (University of Campina Grande, Brazil)

Please register in advance!

https://www.logicandreligion.com/webinars

Abstract: In this webinar I discuss the following topics: (a) the concept
of a god; (b) the concept of God; (c) conceptions of God; (d) the Simple
Being; (e) the Greatest Being; and (f) the Perfect Being. I argue that,
perhaps, we should think of the word 'god' as a family resemblance term; I
suggest that, for some purposes, it is useful to stipulate that gods are
venerable beings that have and exercise power over all else. I argue—in
line with my book Describing Gods: An Investigation of Divine Attributes
(pp. 1-22)—that, necessarily, something is God if and only if it is the one
and only god. I insist that this nominal definition does all of the work
that we need nominal definitions to do. I suggest that we might extract
real definitions of God from theistic theories about God. I then go on to
discuss three different real definitions that some theists have given of
God: 'the Simple Being', 'the Greatest Being', and 'The Perfect Being'. My
discussion of the Greatest Being follows Jeff Speaks' book The Greatest
Possible Being. My discussion of the Perfect Being criticises the line that
Rasmussen takes in his review of Speaks' book. In addressing these topics,
I hope to also address what might be called "the logic of the concept of
God".

[PEIRCE-L] IS SCIENTISM THE NEW UNIVERSAL CHURCH? The Logic and Religion Webinar, November 18

2021-11-17 Thread FRANCISCO MARIANO
Dear Colleague,

You are invited to participate in the next session of the Logic and Religion
Webinar Series which will be held on November 18, 2021 at 4pm CET with the
topic:

IS SCIENTISM THE NEW UNIVERSAL CHURCH?

Speaker: Laurent Lafforgue (Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques, France,
Fields Medal)

Chair: Snezana Lawrence (Middlesex University, UK)

Please register in advance!

Abstract: In a text of 1971 entitled The New Universal Church, the famous
mathematician Alexander Grothendieck defended that through a process of
imperialist expansion, science has created an ideology of its own, scientism,
that has many of the features of a new religion. He called it "La nouvelle
eglise universelle". How does Grothendieck's text against scientism and the
imperialism of science relate to his thought? How does it relate to his
mathematics as well as to his ideas about religions ? Can it be said that
Grothendieck had become against science or that, in some sense, he had always
been against some form of science? These are some of the questions that will be
addressed in this webinar.

With best wishes,

Francisco de Assis Mariano

"k-Provability in PA"
Logica Universalis, On-line first June 09, 2021
https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11787-021-00278-1

We study the decidability of k-provability in PA—the relation ‘being provable
in PA with at most k steps’—and the decidability of the proof-skeleton
problem—the problem of deciding if a given formula has a proof that has a given
skeleton (the list of axioms and rules that were used). The decidability of
k-provability for the usual Hilbert-style formalisation of PA is still an open
problem, but it is known that the proof-skeleton problem is undecidable for
that theory. Using new methods, we present a characterisation of some numbers k
for which k-provability is decidable, and we present a characterisation of some
proof-skeletons for which one can decide whether a formula has a proof whose
skeleton is the considered one. These characterisations are natural and
parameterised by unification algorithms.
