MS210: Integrated Pest Management for Museums, Libraries and Archives
Instructor: Gretchen Anderson
Dates: Sept 30 through Nov 8, 2013
Location: Online at www.museumclasses.org

Description:
The only thing worse than mice or cockroaches in your kitchen, is
finding them in your museum collection. Participants in Integrated Pest
Management for Museums, Libraries and Archives learn low-toxicity
methods of controlling infestations. IPM is the standard method for
treating incoming items and monitoring holdings. Integrated Pest
Management for Museums, Libraries and Archives discusses how
infestations occur, helps identify risks, provides feasible mitigation
strategies, discusses the different techniques of treating infested
materials, and helps you complete an IPM plan and monitoring schedule
for your institution. The course covers pest identification, insects,
rodent, birds, bats, other mammals and mold infestations, as well as
other problems raised by participants.

Logistics:
Participants in Integrated Pest Management for Museums, Libraries and
Archives work through eight sections at their own pace. Instructor
Gretchen Anderson is available for scheduled email support. Materials
and resources include online literature, slide lectures and dialog
between students and online chats led by the instructor. The course is
limited to 20 participants.

Integrated Pest Management for Museums, Libraries and Archives runs six
weeks. To learn more about the course go to
http://www.collectioncare.org/training/trol_classes_ms210.html If you
have trouble please contact Helen Alten at he...@collectioncare.org

The Instructor:
Objects conservator Gretchen Anderson learned her craft at the American
Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian's Conservation Analytical
Lab, the Canadian Conservation Institute, Getty Conservation Lab, the
Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Minnesota Historical Society.
She established the conservation department at the Science Museum of
Minnesota in 1989. She is the co-author of A Holistic Approach to Museum
Pest Management, a technical leaflet for the American Association for
State and Local History and established a rigorous IPM program for the
Science Museum. She was a key member in the planning team that designed
and built a new facility for the Science Museum of Minnesota. This
endeavor resulted in not only a state of the art exhibition and storage
facility, but also a major publication about the experience of building
a new museum and creating the correct environments: Moving the Mountain.
In 2009 she accepted the position of conservator and head of the
conservation section at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in
Pittsburgh. Ms. Anderson is a member of the American Institute for
Conservation and the Society for the Preservation of Natural History
Collections. She lectures and presents workshops on preventive
conservation, IPM, cleaning in museums, and practical methods and
materials for storage of collections.

Hi everyone,

I am doing a quick survey of other institutions policies when it comes
to pest management. I work for a large national museum in Ottawa and
we are reviewing our policies. Our museum, like many others have begun
hosting large catered events as an additional source of revenue in
these challenging times. We hire an external contractor to implement
our pest management program (apparently as a cost cutting measure),
but are disappointed in the results and the amount of our time which
goes into training these contractors. Does anyone out there have
experience with implementing policies around the expectations for
these external companies/contractors? OR do you have experience with
implementing plans which correlate to hosted/catered events?

We are also reviewing our freezing policies, and we tend to freeze
everything that comes in or out of collections and exhibit space,
(building materials, specimens, artifacts etc) as a pest infestation
would be devastating to our collection. We are curious as to the
freezing policies other institutions have specifically around freezing
non-collection materials. Could anyone share their experiences?

A reply through pest-list is fine, but I'm also happy to discuss
further using era...@mus-nature.ca <mailto:era...@mus-nature.ca>

Kindest regards,

Erika Range

Jessica,
You are already on this list so you have one good resource already.
http://museumpests.net/ Is a great resource as well. They have a
downloadable set of procedures for Control of Food and Live Plants that
may be helpful.
http://museumpests.net/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/foodplants.pdf
You should definitely start a log of all pest sightings. Enlist the help
of other staff members especially the cleaning staff. Create a simple
form for them to fill out any time the find a pest.
This will help you identify the pests, where they are coming from, what
they are coming in for and hopefully help your case to make improvements
to your policies.
At Museum Study we teach two 4 week courses on pest management,
Introduction to Integrated Pest Management and Integrated Pest
Management: The Plan & Implementation.

Hi everyone,

I just started as director/curator for the Southern Utah Museum of
Art, which is located on the campus of Southern Utah University. When
I arrived last week, I was alarmed to see potted plants not only in
offices but also in a gallery! Today, I spotted an insect. Can you
help me identify it? Image attached.

Also, if you have policies to help your museums avoid pests, would you
be willing to share them with me? I need to implement those best
practices here, but I'm not sure where to start. Any resources you
might have would be appreciated!

Sincerely,

A written plan formalizes the IPM strategy and keeps management abreast
of your status. It organizes your ideas and lays the groundwork for the
needs of the collection and the building(s). It provides the direction
in which you want to take the program, including grant funding and
accreditation.
Join Carnegie Museum of Natural History Conservator Gretchen Anderson
for this four week online course in which participants will learn how to
apply IPM principles to their specific situation and institution. A
draft plan and specific implementation strategies will be developed and
discussed. Even though our institutions have different challenges the
exchange of ideas presents the opportunity for us to help each other
brainstorm solutions that will work for our situation.
