The one issue I have with my existing patch though is the removal of
the currency symbol from the output. There have been many suggestions
that that just gets in the way but, following up on my own statement
above, this is two changes, not one, and perhaps should
e patch? Should I add the currency

at the point of pg_autovacuum would be to run 24/7 so
that there is never big hit on the system. Perhaps it could be designed
to throttle itself based on current system usage though.

I don't believe that such a facility exists but before dismissing it you
should test it out. I think that you will find that disk buffering (the
system's as well as PostgreSQL's) will effect
information gets journalled but in any case,
journalling only helps if you have a journalled file system. Not
everyone does.
This is not to say that fsync is always required, just that it solves a
different problem than all those other tools.
