[Phono-L] Bessie Smith 1926 Test Pressing

2010-04-28 Thread bruce78rpm
A very good friend of mine, and longtime 78rpm Collector, passed away recently.
I just came from his widows house, and went through some of the remnants of his
collection, much of which he had already sold off a few years ago. She needs to
raise some funds, and I will be selling off in the coming weeks the few records
that may have some value. The cream of the crop appears to be a 1926 Bessie
Smith Columbia test pressing of Baby Doll which I will be posting on Ebay this
coming Saturday. I will also be putting it up on Youtube and provide the link
as part of the listing. So let any of your early jazz and blues collector
friends know of this impending listing.I will also let 78list know what I have
it posted and provide the link. All proceeds will go to help out my good
friends widow.

Thanks,

Bruce

Unless one knows the weight of the packed shipment, a buyer can't really
tell if the shipper is off the mark with his shipping costs, and I believe
he Marek in Canada, right? Shipping from Canada is always more expensive in
my experience. If you want an inflated price for shipping try the $10 I was
charged to ship 0.1 pounds (less than two ounces) of repro car parts from PA
to MA. They use UPS. The post office would have cost under $2.00 I'll
bet.

Agreed. I charge exact shipping and I usually have boxes onhand. If I have to
buy new boxes I might charge $1 or so. Sometimes you have to pay the cost of
doing business as a courtesy. I have found that it builds repeat customers.

[Phono-L] reproducer identification

2010-04-28 Thread dan s
hello everyone i was wondering if anyone could tell me what the make and or
model of reproducer this is. i bought a victrola orthophonic v v 4-3 and
this reproducer came with it. judging by the sloppy fit to the tone arm i
would have to guess this is not the original one but i don't know. it is in
need of a thumb screw which is why i would like to know which make it is.
any information would be very helpful and greatly appreciated. thank you

Hello - I found a dual lateral/vertical reproducer in an antique shop today.
It was in a box of accessories for a floor model Victrola XI. I asked if
they would part with just that piece and managed to buy it pretty reasonably.
It has what appears to be a Bakelite diaphragm - it's opaque brown. The needle
holder has two holes - one in line with the diaphragm for the lateral records,
and one angled for vertical cut records. Its backing has two L-tubes that can
be twisted around to position the reproducer for the appropriate record type.
When in position for a vertical cut record the diaphragm is positioned face
down horizontal to the turntable - as with an Ultona. It's not an Ultona, but
I don't see any markings indicating what company manufactured this piece. I
was hoping someone would recognize it by this description and might know
something more about it.

Then the real question - where can I acquire a sapphire tipped stylus? I do
have a number of vertical cut records in my collection - some Pathés, a couple
of Rex records, and a Par-O-Ket - and I'm glad to be one step closer to being
able to listen to them... just need to find a sapphire stylus. Any ideas?

Whoa,
Many people that make parts come and go. Good quality reproduction parts can
turn a machine useful and displayable until an original part can be found if
at all.

I take a different view, I'm very thankful all these people do what they do
and I doubt they are getting rich and perhaps in many cases just covering
cost.

Regardless of shipping cost or attitude I appreciate having the option.

He is after all making parts for a very limited production run.

Now if you pay a parts supplier and don't get your parts that is a
conversation to have.

The VV 4-3 Consolette - I have the second cabinet style of this
machine - is an orthophonic. The orthophonic reproducers that were made
of cast metal are prone to cracks with age, and maybe that is what
happened to the reproducer on your machine - maybe a previous owner
replaced it with this one. I'd track down a correct replacement
orthophonic reproducer.

The show was well attended and sales were brisk. A rainy day detoured
sales in the parking lot on Saturday. The show is growing and the
attendance was excellent.

The Stanton auction was incredible with awesome
phonographs for sale.
Buyers were ready to stimulate the economy and
prices for rare items set
some record prices. Highlights were:

Eldridge Johnson Model C phonograph: $3500.00
Very rare Salter mahogany
double bow front record cabinet: $6700.00
Rare lever-wind ratchet
phonograph: $21,000.00
Edison Idealia Cylinder Phonograph: $20,000.00
Vogue records sold between $25.00 $35.00 with the exception of a few
rare
Vogues that made $100.00
Phonograph lamps were in demand with a Fairy Lamp bringing $3800.00.

2010-04-28 Thread Bill Boruff

Mike - I agree with you
I have purchased several parts from Mirek and have always been very
satisfied with both the quality and the cost which is only a fraction
of what an original part would cost - assuming you could find one.
As far as shipping goes, it is expensive to ship out of the country.
Shipping a 4 pound 1 ounce package from the US to Canada costs a
minimum of $27.00 via USPS and it doesn't take much to weigh 4
pounds. I certainly hope that suppliers like Mirek continue their
valuable contribution to our hobby.

2010-04-28 Thread dan s
thank you gentlemen for your help on this matter it is greatly appreciated.
i did find an original orthophonic reproducer and will hopefully have it by
mon. or tue. and by that time i will hopefully(?) have finished putting it
all back together. as i have completely stripped it down and sanded every
piece of wood bare. i am now in the process of restaining it and cleaning,
polishing the rest of the components. the cabinet suffered quite a bit of
water damage due to a major flood we had here in the fifties. which is
probably when the reproducer broke and was replaced by one from the fifties.
i'm looking for a thumbscrew for the pal so i can try to sell it to offset
the cost of the reproducer i bought. so i can say to my wife look honey i
sold something (for a change). thanks again to all.
 best regards

Greetings,

Photo's of
the Wayne Show can be found on the WIMAPS website at
www.wimaps.org

The show was well attended and sales were brisk. A rainy day detoured
sales in the parking lot on Saturday. The show is growing and the
attendance was excellent.

The Stanton auction was incredible with awesome
phonographs for sale.
Buyers were ready to stimulate the economy and
prices for rare items set
some record prices. Highlights were:

Eldridge Johnson Model C phonograph: $3500.00
Very rare Salter mahogany
double bow front record cabinet: $6700.00
Rare lever-wind ratchet
phonograph: $21,000.00
Edison Idealia Cylinder Phonograph: $20,000.00
Vogue records sold between $25.00 $35.00 with the exception of a few
rare
Vogues that made $100.00
Phonograph lamps were in demand with a Fairy Lamp bringing $3800.00.

Unless one knows the weight of the packed shipment, a buyer can't really
tell if the shipper is off the mark with his shipping costs, and I believe
he Marek in Canada, right? Shipping from Canada is always more expensive
in
my experience. If you want an inflated price for shipping try the $10 I
was
charged to ship 0.1 pounds (less than two ounces) of repro car parts from
PA
to MA. They use UPS. The post office would have cost under $2.00 I'll
bet.

mirek had told me he was selling out and if you look at an old catalog he
raised his prices considerably
when jerry madsen sold out he was not greedy and sold at fair prices
mirek did make good quality items and i have bought from him in the past
its just his attitude now and how to screw the customer since he wont need
us anymore
i have said my feeling on it and wish anyone else better luck dealing with
him

Mike - I agree with you
I have purchased several parts from Mirek and have always been very
satisfied with both the quality and the cost which is only a fraction
of what an original part would cost - assuming you could find one.
As far as shipping goes, it is expensive to ship out of the country.
Shipping a 4 pound 1 ounce package from the US to Canada costs a
minimum of $27.00 via USPS and it doesn't take much to weigh 4
pounds. I certainly hope that suppliers like Mirek continue their
valuable contribution to our hobby.

I take a different view, I'm very thankful all these people do what

 covering

Regardless of shipping cost or attitude I appreciate having the

He is after all making parts for a very limited production run.

Now if you pay a parts supplier and don't get your parts that is a
 conversation to have.
