[Phono-L] Columbia Deluxe Grafonola with Lion's Head Columns

2014-01-31 Thread Don Henry
FOR SALE: Rare Columbia Grafonola Deluxe with Lion's Head columns. This is the
phonograph only version, which is actually rarer than the Reginaphone version.
They sold poorly due to their very high cost at the time. Nice original
condition. Top could use a little veneer work. A very rare phonograph! $4500.
Pictures available on request. I am in Los Angeles. phonowo...@hotmail.com

I have two 14 inch horns for sale.

The first is a very nice example of a 14 inch black and brass bell horn. This
horn is original, and has the desirable Pat'd Applied For stamp. It retains
the original paint and original patina on the bell. The bell and body have
some bends, and minor dings, but it presents well as is. The price on this
 one is $120.00

The second is a very nice example of a 14 inch all brass horn. This horn is
an original. It is the earlier version with the flat seem between the bell
and the body of the horn. If has some minor dings in it, so its not perfect,
but it presents really well as is. The price for this one is $160.00

No PayPal on either. Checks only.

 Pictures on request.

 Please contact mshawnorou...@gmail.com with interest

[Phono-L] Model H Reproducer question

2013-11-24 Thread Don Henry
Hi All:
I have a Model H reproducer with a top housing that has no printing on it other
than the serial number. Can anyone shed info on this type of reproducer? I have
seen them before but wasn't sure what the reason for this was. It is serial
#C18226. It has the green lacquer finish as well.
Thanks,Don Henry

[Phono-L] Mike Vertucci has passed away

2011-01-03 Thread Don Henry

I just wanted to pass along for those of you who knew Mike Vertucci, that he
passed away yesterday morning in his sleep. He had been in very ill health for
the last year and a half since he fell and was paralyzed from the waist down.
Mike was an avid collector with a childlike enthusiasm for the hobby. Although
some had less than satisfying transactions with Mike over the years, I truly
believe that his intentions were always good, if not always 100% accurate in
his descriptions. Up until a month ago, Mike was still so excited about
collecting. Even bedridden and with no money, he was making deals and trades in
his head and looked to the future. Truly the hobby is what kept him going and
helped to lift his spirits. R.I.P. Mike.

That was pretty much the end of the story. I ended up re-restoring the machine
and it came out reasonably nice. The reason I shared that whole exchange was it
simply had to be read to be believed. I was stunned at the lack of rational
thinking, denial of responsibility, and borderline psychotic ramblings, not to
mention the poor grasp of the most basic concepts of English grammar and
sentence structure... Now I'm getting personal, so I'll stop. Let's just leave
it at caveat emptor. Don

me say that If you read my Return policy there is a 15% restocking fee also
there is noway anyone will return $ 100.00 Shipping handling:the description
of this was as honest as one could be.you look at it as it was not restored or
replated I look at it as it was.you are always allowed to disagree and I do
refund policy because of this. thank you DH: As much as I would love for you
make $750 on a misrepresented machine, I feel that the machine is in NO WAY
what you described. SHOW CONDITION would generally imply that the case did not
have a 9 CRACK in it and that the horn was not PUTTIED up with INFERIOR
PATCHES. I was trying to be nice but the truth is you TOTALLY MISREPRESENTED
THE CONDITION OF THE MACHINE to an extent that is tantamount to fraud. Also, you
managed to leave your original invoice inside the machine which indicated you
bought it for $4850... not the $100 less that you told me, which further
establishes your willingness to not tell the truth.I will make a case with EBAY
and pursue all outlets to make sure that this situation is remedied. I cannot
believe that you are willing to sit here and deny what you explicitly stated in
your description, which by the way was copied from the previous seller with a
few convenient omissions.I really hate the fact that you are trying to double
talk your way out of this. That upsets me even more than the fact that the
machine is not nearly what you made it out to be.JM: I thought you bought it
for $ 5,000.00 also there was no crack in the machine when I sent it to you.
there was no tantamount to fraud.at allin my description if you read it does
not state it was mint original and on a scale from 1-10 its an 11.it is however
super condition regardless of the few bumps .that shows it is original not
repro.you wanted a mint new condition Victor 6 that sells for $ 8500.00 for $
5000 ,I told you the best I could what you would get for your money.I described
it the way I saw it. people that buy my machines see that my description is
right on the money I think you got a great machine for the money that you
paid.DH: The crack is obviously an old one as it has been REFINISHED OVER, but
there is no use arguing the point with you. I never expected a MINT machine. I
expected the machine to be as you described... which it is NOT. I requested
more pictures... which you did not send... so I took YOUR WORD on the SPECIFIC

Jeff:

If it makes you feel any better, you wouldn't have gotten it for $5. He ended
the auction the same day it was listed so he found out right away what he
had... Besides, I already had it bookmarked!

The Zonophone closed face reproducer has been relisted.

He now knows what he has.

These are appropriate for any and all early Zonophones, the A,B,C, or D.
There was both a 3 screw version without a needle guard, and the 4 screw
version, most often seen with the needle guard, but sometimes not. These
reproducers are exceedingly rare. I have seen only one other on ebay in
perhaps 5 years! There were some reproduction 3 screw reproducers
produced in the '70's. I have one of these.

This will bring a king's ransom. It will be fun to watch. (I wish I had
seen it before it closed when he did not know what it was! Could have
had the blasted thing for $5!)

[Phono-L] Lots of Stuff for sale!

2010-08-19 Thread Don Henry

I have a whole bunch of parts including turntables, tonearms, complete motors,
parts motors, cabinets, that I would like to sell in bulk. There are about 20
milk crates full of goodies. Most of this I acquired from Neil Maken's
inventory about 7 years ago. I recently dug it out of storage and would like to
find it a good home. I figure a fair price on the lot is $2500. You have to
come pick it up in West Los Angeles. If interested...conatact me at
phonowo...@hotmail.com.

Thanks all!

So what else is new?? :-) Here is an item number that really burns me because
of their claims in large type that this is an original machine. It burned me
so much that I had to write to the seller with some education. Not
accusatory, just informative. I know it's useless, but I couldn't help
it...If this phonograph is from their own collection as they say, they must
 have a bunch of crap.

Yeh John, but you could pick it up for a bargain price of $0.99 and
avoid the shipping cost as its right in your backyard isn't it?
Its a steal at that price! :)It would be worth paying the 99 cents
just to take it and smash it to bits.

It probably is an all original machine-no new repro parts, just the ones it
came with originally. The reproducer does look better than other crapophone

I have a Vitaphone consolette that looks different from most of the
pictures that I see. It's a model 60 and is similar to the model 100 but
the cabinet is much simpler. But the significant difference is the tonearm
which does not have the large C shaped weight at the front end. Mine has
a number of differences that allow the wooden piece to be placed above the
metal rails of the arm. Instead of the large C weight, mine has two chunks
of heavy metal (presumably lead) mounted between the two metal rails of the
arm. Like the model 100, this model 60 has the horn in the lid which leads
to lots of fancy plumbing and joints inside the record compartment required
to allow the lid to raise and lower while the soundbox remains stationary
and mounted to the motorboard. The horn is always connected to the
soundbox, so it can be played with the lid open or closed. A bit of a
 plumbers nightmare. But interesting.

The sound of these machines could best be described as mellow. The
wood arm is not really comparable to a conventional tonearm but is actually
analogous to the stylus bar of a conventional acoustic reproducer as it
couples the stylus tip to the diaphragm. The ENTIRE long piece of wood
vibrates just as the stylus bar on a more conventional reproducer. The
proper tonearm of the Vitaphone is actually comprised of the two metal rails
that run along side of the wood bar. The idea was very bizarre. But the
upshot of it is that the wooden arm functions as a lowpass filter. The
sound produced is soft and unusually smooth in response with a diminished
treble (the anti-scratch feature touted in the advertizements) - quite
unusual for an acoustic phono. Although they play rather softly, I would
not recommend using loud needles with these Vitaphones. The compliance of
the wood arm is nearly nonexistent - all the compliance, such as it is, is
produced by the flexing of the needle itself. To mount a loud needle would
be akin to mounting it in a rock on a stick and expecting that setup not to
tear the bejeezus out of your records. And, yes, it is capable of playing
vertical modulation about as well as lateral. This is because the
connection from the wood arm to the soundbox diaphragm is accomplished with
a string that is oriented at approximately a 45 degree angle to the center
of the diaphragm. This arrangement causes either vertical or lateral motion
of the wood arm to be transmitted (rather poorly) to the diaphragm. So it's
an interesting machine to own and demonstrate, but I don't recommend using
 it often
