Hi,

Were there other companies beside Edison who made these?

Hello

This machine is a PARLOPHONE, and you'd have to be pretty skilled to dictate
on to this model as its only a cylinder shaver. PARLOPHONE also made
Cylinder Dictating machines, and the one of the same era as the shaver is in
a black metal case, usually on a metal trolley with wheels.

Hi Loran

Sorry did'nt see your mail before I made a reply. One can see in the photo's
the large drawer for the swarf (?shaved of wax). So its a fairly industrial
strength machine. I havent tried to connect mine to the power supply to see
how well it works in case I do damage to the national grid or myself.

regards

It's just a run-of-the-mill office Dictaphone shaver. I've got one that
I picked up for $20. I'd be willing to sell it for half of that guy's
buy-it-now price ;)

[Phono-L] Cylinder dictation machine

2006-12-24 Thread Steven Medved
Hi John,

Amazing, and extremely interesting, thanks for the information, I never
realized this could happen, my Model A standard will barely shave and has to
be put in 4 minute so I would never have thought of this.

Thanks again,

Steve

The heavy dictation cylinders are spun at a very high RPM on these shavers.
Inspect the cylinder before you shave it for nicks in the rim or cracks.
Set the shaving blade to make light passes on the cylinder. Close lid when
shaving. When shaving a cylinder, close the lid almost all the way before
you flip the switch on, and flip switch off before fully raising lid.
Failure to observe one or a combination of any of these factors may result
in a chunk of cylinder hitting you so hard in the forehead you will see
stars. Voice of experience. Very possible to take out an eye, break a nose
or teeth. John M
