Why not start a php-jobs mailing list? It would be an ideal place for employers and job seekers alike, just like the SecurityFocus security-jobs mailing list. - Casey On Tuesday 12 February 2002 17:28, you wrote: > On Tuesday, February 12, 2002, at 05:17 PM, NDPTAL85 wrote: > > You know at most places thats a great strategy for getting fired? Well, yes there are a number of people, including myself, Sun, Aol and loads of others that are very interested in what is going to emerge as the king of distributed authentication and who will, if anyone, will be the king of providing web services that work. It's a very exciting and new area for the programming world and open source needs to make it's response. But that doesn't really mean that *nix folks are cheering for C#. Everyone knows that the desktop market will continue to shrink from here on out and software manufacturers need to be able to provide high-quality secure online applications that work. .Net is a platform doing so with Passport as the authentication mechanism. I wonder how PHP will fit into this whole distributed application framework, if it will. I have written a PHP authentication module, that could possibly be distrubuted, hmmm. We are off topic, sorry. If anyone wants to respond to this, just email directly. On 12 Feb 2002 at 23:41, Michael Sims wrote: > At 08:46 PM 2/12/2002 -0800, Keith V. Re: [PHP] PHP Work in New York
I must be lucky or something, 'cause the place that hired me basically said, "we're developing this, you're coding it, get it done." I was actually told that we'd be going with PostgreSQL and not MS SQL or Oracle or whatever, which was cool to begin with, but the rest of the details (web server platform, etc.) were left up to me. So I kind of went with PHP right off the bat because I needed something that lent itself to quick coding. I had never really developed much in PHP before hand, but now we've got enough lines of PHP code to choke a camel. Last week I looked at some VBScript/ASP code that I kind of need to port to PHP. I was mortified. J Erik Price wrote: > > I suppose that's a matter of opinion. One thing's for sure: where I > work, ASP is the "official" scripting language. George, Get a list of all the consulting/temp offices in NYC. Put your resume, sign up, etc. with all of them. http://www.panix.com/~grvsmth/redguide/tips/register.html That redguide seemed like a real good idea but it doesn't look like it has kept up but the above article is good. I don't live in NYC but I just did a quick search and found this: http://manhattan.about.com/cs/employment/ Don't sit at home and work the internet (do that at night perhaps). You really have to make contact with people and build up those networking skills. I've been looking for a job for about 4 months now but I've only been using the web. I get a little work from the local RHIC office. My skills are Perl/PHP (and only with a month of PHP but I scored higher on that test than Perl which I've been using for 7 years:) ... Demand is in Java. And of course demand is in that which doesn't exist and so be prepared to bullshit. Were I you I'd take just about any job that is related just to get out and make contacts. Only reason I'm not doing this yet is because I'm working on ... gosh ... on creating a website that will make me money :):) ... I think I've got a good idea and if I make 1/3 of my previous incomes then I'd be happy as I could work from anywhere (like where costs are 1/5 of where I'm living now). I have found no luck at online freelance programming even though I did manage to pull in over US$500 a month doing this in my free time a few years ago. Now ... nothing. Incredible. Hit the pavement. See if there is some local PHP group (like a Perl mongers group) or a linux users group if you're into that. Talk to people.
