Bug#804683: [Pkg-fonts-devel] Bug#804683: josm: Please switch to fonts-noto from fonts-droid
Hi all, Am Freitag, den 13.11.2015, 10:56 +0530 schrieb Vasudev Kamath: > Do you guys have any suggestion on the above issue mentioned by > Sebastiaan. this discussion reminds me of the one we had about the look of the Cantarell font and how its shape changed when the Adobe CFF renderer was enabled by default in Freetype: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=798805 Eventually, this has led to the following threads on the Fontconfig mailing list: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/fontconfig/2015-October/005562.html http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/fontconfig/2015-November/005588.html To summarize, font hinting depends very much on the format of the font (i.e. OTF/CFF, TTF or Type 1) and the quality of the embedded hinting information. The wide range of combinations this enables turns the whole thing into a mess that currently noone seems to understand. The two threads I have posted above try to shed some light into the situation, though. Hi Sebastiaan, I've just added fonts team to the Cc. Since I'm not very experienced in this matter some one from team can provide some suggestion. From the discussion in the upstream JOSM issue [0] it's become clear that the Noto font is not sharp as the Droid font it's meant to replace. In response to this concern raised by the JOSM developers I created an issue in the upstream noto-fonts issue tracker [1] in which I asked if it's possible to improve the sharpness at small font sizes. Do you have any suggestions how to improve the Noto font to be as sharp as the Droid font at small font sizes, before I raise the issue on the freetype-devel list as suggested in the noto-fonts issue?
