[Pkg-kde-extras] Bug#688947: icecc: modifies conffiles (policy 10.7.3): /etc/default/icecc
Package: icecc Version: 0.9.7-5 Severity: serious Tags: squeeze-ignore User: debian...@lists.debian.org Usertags: piuparts Control: found -1 0.9.5-2 Hi, during a test with piuparts I noticed your package modifies conffiles. This is forbidden by the policy, see http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-files.html#s-config-files 10.7.3: "[...] The easy way to achieve this behavior is to make the configuration file a conffile. [...] This implies that the default version will be part of the package distribution, and must not be modified by the maintainer scripts during installation (or at any other time)." Note that once a package ships a modified version of that conffile, dpkg will prompt the user for an action how to handle the upgrade of this modified conffile (that was not modified by the user). Further in 10.7.3: "[...] must not ask unnecessary questions (particularly during upgrades) [...]" If a configuration file is customized by a maintainer script after having asked some debconf questions, it may not be marked as a conffile. Instead a template could be installed in /usr/share and used by the postinst script to fill in the custom values and create (or update) the configuration file (preserving any user modifications!). This file must be removed during postrm purge. ucf(1) may help with these tasks. See also http://wiki.debian.org/DpkgConffileHandling In https://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2012/09/msg00412.html and followups it has been agreed that these bugs are to be filed with severity serious. debsums reports modification of the following files, from the attached log (scroll to the bottom...): /etc/default/icecc cheers, Andreas icecc_0.9.7-5.log.gz Description: GNU Zip compressed data ___ pkg-kde-extras mailing list pkg-kde-extras@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pkg-kde-extras

[Pkg-kde-extras] Bug#886943: libtelepathy-qt5-0: unhandled symlink to directory conversion: /usr/share/doc/PACKAGE
Package: libtelepathy-qt5-0 Version: 0.9.7-2 Severity: serious User: debian...@lists.debian.org Usertags: piuparts Hi, an upgrade test with piuparts revealed that your package installs files over existing symlinks and possibly overwrites files owned by other packages. This usually means an old version of the package shipped a symlink but that was later replaced by a real (and non-empty) directory. This kind of overwriting another package's files cannot be detected by dpkg. This was observed on the following upgrade paths: stretch -> buster For /usr/share/doc/PACKAGE this may not be problematic as long as both packages are installed, ship byte-for-byte identical files and are upgraded in lockstep. But once one of the involved packages gets removed, the other one will lose its documentation files, too, including the copyright file, which is a violation of Policy 12.5: https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/#copyright-information For other overwritten locations anything interesting may happen. Note that dpkg intentionally does not replace directories with symlinks and vice versa, you need the maintainer scripts to do this. See in particular the end of point 4 in https://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/#details-of-unpack-phase-of-installation-or-upgrade It is recommended to use the dpkg-maintscript-helper commands 'dir_to_symlink' and 'symlink_to_dir' (available since dpkg 1.17.14) to perform the conversion, ideally using d/$PACKAGE.maintscript. Do not forget to add 'Pre-Depends: ${misc:Pre-Depends}' in d/control. See dpkg-maintscript-helper(1) and dh_installdeb(1) for details. >From the attached log (scroll to the bottom...): 0m29.2s ERROR: FAIL: silently overwrites files via directory symlinks: /usr/share/doc/libtelepathy-qt5-0/changelog.Debian.gz (libtelepathy-qt5-0:amd64) != /usr/share/doc/libtelepathy-qt4-2/changelog.Debian.gz (libtelepathy-qt4-2:amd64) /usr/share/doc/libtelepathy-qt5-0 -> libtelepathy-qt4-2 /usr/share/doc/libtelepathy-qt5-0/changelog.gz (libtelepathy-qt5-0:amd64) != /usr/share/doc/libtelepathy-qt4-2/changelog.gz (libtelepathy-qt4-2:amd64) /usr/share/doc/libtelepathy-qt5-0 -> libtelepathy-qt4-2 /usr/share/doc/libtelepathy-qt5-0/copyright (libtelepathy-qt5-0:amd64) != /usr/share/doc/libtelepathy-qt4-2/copyright (libtelepathy-qt4-2:amd64) /usr/share/doc/libtelepathy-qt5-0 -> libtelepathy-qt4-2 cheers, Andreas libtelepathy-qt5-0_0.9.7-2.log.gz Description: application/gzip ___ pkg-kde-extras mailing list pkg-kde-extras@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pkg-kde-extras

The buildds only consider the first alternative. This will break once mysql-5.6 gets replaced by mysql-5.7 (or whatever else). This will break in stretch in case mysql-5.6 leaves stretch. And even if secondary alternatives would be considered by the buildds - which provider of virtual-mysql-server-core should be installed? There is probably more than one ... So in this case you would really want a generic real package as first alternative: Build-Depends(-Indep): default-mysql-server-core | virtual-mysql-server-core except that we currently don't have default-mysql-server-core ...
