Thank you for your suggestions. Getting rid of the trailing semicolons removed
a couple of the error lines, so the latest crashing reads:
$ kile
kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/lib/libkdeinit4_klauncher.so

Ok, after playing around for a while, I have found that if I remove the module
acx from the kernel, then I can run kile.
If I type:
$ sudo modprobe -a acx
$ kile
then kile runs (Yay!)
