Bug#604687: vlc: xvideo output not working on powerbook (radeon video card, powerpc)

2011-05-17 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
   Hello,

Unfortunately, I am unable to corroborate the vlc log and xvinfo output
from your bug report. It seems VLC does not "see" the XVideo adapters at
all. Normally, it should print plenty of messages in the log if it could
not use a specific adapter, unless the X server returns protocol errors.

Please make sure that xvideo-adaptors is set to -1. I guess this won't
work. Then I'm afraid the only option is to step through the VLC code to
figure out what is failing in xcb_xv.c (I don't have the same hardware, so
I cannot do it myself).

Best regards,

Bug#567957: Wontfix

2011-05-17 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont
tag 567957 + upstream wontfix
thanks

   Hello,

By design, VLC can only handle UTF-8 encoded file names. To access file
systems in other encoding, either the filesystem driver must do the
conversion (a good option for VFAT especially), or the locale (LC_CTYPE or
LANG) must be set to the corresponding encoding. This latter option will be
removed in VLC 1.2.

Debian and most Linux distributions defaults to UTF-8 and there are
absolutely no plans to support anything else in VLC upstream.

2011-05-17 Thread Rémi Denis-Courmont

thanks

   Hello,

As far as I can tell, there are no reasons why VLC would even need to
bother about white spaces in URLs. URLs cannot contain white spaces by
specification. White spaces in URLs should be encoded as %20. So to me, it
looks like the bug lies in your file manager or whichever other application
is parsing the vlc.desktop: That application is not passing syntactically
valid URLs to VLC.

Feel free to reassign to the correct package.

VLC now uses fluidsynth for midi file playback, but it needs to be
enabled at compile time (this can probably be fixed by build-depending

Hi Remi and thanks for your answer. I'm a FluidSynth developer myself
and not aware of any current memory leak issues, and AFAIK it hasn't
been reported on the fluid-dev mailinglist or ticket system, and does
not seem to affect other users of libfluidsynth (or I assume we would
have heard about it).

In what form would you prefer we work together to resolve this memory

forcemerge 590545 513177
thanks

If I understand requests right, non-VLC LibVLC application users want the
GUI plugins to be split out.
That makes sense for GNOME apps: it kills the Qt4 dependencies.

It won't save much for Phonon-VLC though, as it already depends on pretty
much everything that VLC's own Qt4 and skin UIs depend on... Basically, it
should remove the ncurses dependency, and save a little bit of disk space.

Just my 2 cents.

Package: vlc
Version: 0.8.6.c-4

Usage vlc with other version of libvlc0 package contrive many different
problems,
for example (libvlc0 in version 0.8.6.c-4, vlc in older version - 0.8.6.a and
0.8.6-svn20061012.debian-5etch1):

* couldn't load any intearface modules:
> $ vlc
> VLC media player 0.8.6c Janus
> [0001] main private error: no memcpy module matched "any"
> [0220] main interface error: no interface module matched "hotkeys, none"
> [0220] main interface error: no suitable interface module
> [0001] main private error: interface "hotkeys, none" initialization failed
> [0221] main interface error: no interface module matched

> [0221] main interface error: no suitable interface module
> [0001] main private error: interface "screensaver, none" initialization
> failed
> [0222] main interface error: no interface module matched "any"
> [0222] main interface error: no suitable interface module
> [0001] main private error: interface "(null)" initialization failed
* don't play sound (file is playing) in uncompressed wav file
* don't play sound (encoded mp3) in avi files

This problems occur after downgrade vlc (without downgrade libvlc0). Problem
don't exist
after instal same version libvlc0 (or install correct version of vlc) and remove
~/.vlc/cache. Itself remove ~/.vlc/cache don't fix problem.

I suggest set depends in vlc, vlc-nox to libvlc0 (= ${binary:Version}).

Hello vlc maintainers,
i used to run stable, in which reading playlists worked without problems,
and have recently dist-upgraded to unstable,
and now it fails to read these same playlists.

A playlist that this happens with has following content :
#EXTM3U
mms://82.94.231.66/gtonline
http://82.94.231.66/gtonline

When vlc tries to read this playlist
it produces following errormessage in terminal that i started it from :

When i then open the "Media" dialog, and select "Open network stream",
and fill in same adress that appears in playlist file, it works well :
[0x8856b80] access_mms access: selecting stream[0x1] audio (19 kb/s)

So it looks like the file parser is borken.

Thanks for providing vlc,
life is better with webradio :-)

   Hello,

I am closing this bug based on the earlier comment. It turns out the file
was invalid.

(As for the persistent XML error, it refers to the so called media library
cache, not the playlist file you explicitly are trying to open.)

   Hello,

I am unable to reproduce your problem. When I browse a directory with a
dead symbolic link, the LUA HTTP simply skips the symbolic link and shows
the other files. Can you please clarify what your problem is? Thanks.

Bug#627083: "recommends: jackd" is a bit weak

2011-05-17 Thread IOhannes m zmoelnig
Package: jackd2
Version: 1.9.7~dfsg-1
Severity: normal

currently libjack "recommends" to install jackd, which usually evaluates to not
automatically install jackd if a package depends on libjack.

i read bug-report #442814 which implemented the change from "suggests" to
"recommends" but i am not totally convinced that i can follow the argument
(being myself rather audio-centric, so i have a natural bias ;-))

in short:
- a lot of audio-packages have jack support and thus depend on libjack
- installing libjack does not mean that jackd _must_ be installed (great, i like
  weak dependencies)
- however, installing libjack will not trigger an installation of jackd (due to
the _very_ weak dependency), thus most installations will end up without jackd
installed (that was the purpose of #442814)
- if the user wants to use the jack-enabled application (which they installed
using apt), it will not work in most of these installations as jack cannot be
started, giving a cryptic error (e.g. "/usr/bin/jackd not found"), leaving the
use alone

i therefore suggest to raise dependency-level of libjack towards jackd to
"suggests" again, so people will actually be able to use their installed
jack-enabled applications.

alternative suggestions:
 - the packagers could manually add "Suggests: jackd" to each package;
this is ugly as it has to be done for each and every jack-enabled package and
requires a lot more packaging ressources.
 - add a new mechanism to apt, maintaining a "recommendation score" for each
package (A) which is raised whenever the user installs a package (B) that
'recommends: A'; once several packages recommending A are installed, A could
enter auto-install mode (a la 'suggests') thus people focusing around a
group of
   applications (e.g. audio people) will get what they expect;
this is ugly, as people installing loads of similar software will probably
install the recommended application as well, whereas the occasional user
will be
   left without e.g. jackd and a "non-working" system;

I think you have misunderstood dependency relationships. Recommends is
stronger, and will be installed by default by apt.

It seems you have the terms confused, but the actual effect is correct:

Currently libjack _suggests_ jackd (not recommend).

Suggestions are weaker than recommends, and you are right that this
means jackd will normally not be pulled in automatically.

I agree with the logic of that bugreport:

Recommends are for situations when _most_ users will want the
relationship satisfied, whereas suggests are for more occational
interests.

Generally libraries for daemons should *not* recommend their daemon.

The fact that an audio tool _can_ use some daemon should only guarantee
a suggestion. Audio tools that _mainly_ use that daemon can themselves
add an explicit recommendation on that daemon.

If the recommendation was added to the library, it would be impossible
for an audio tool mainly used without jackd to not recommend jackd.

Kind regards,

 - Jonas

i see the point (though "recommends" is still no absolute dependency, so
i don't see a reason why it has to be avoided)

i only now noticed just how many jack-apps have indeed a
"Depends: jackd"

No problem. Just took me a moment to wrap it around in my head :-)

I was not referring to Debian Policy, but summarizing the sanity that I
then afterwards elaborated on a bit.

Sorry, I could have mentioned more clearly that it was my own personal
reasoning, not a universal truth.

The underlying rules of Suggests and Recommends is, however, quite
clearly defined in Debian Policy §7.2:
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-relationships.html#s-binarydeps

There it says that "Recommends:" is for needs at "all but unusual
installations".

So it is not enough that it is /often/ needed.

Good. However, the relationship with thte old packages is wrong. It
 should Replace the older packages.

However, I'm not quite sure if we

 What do others think?

I probably won't be able to dedicate much time to this during this
week, so if anyone else can have a look at this package and comment on
it, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to have more eyeballs looking at it
since it is not a trivial package and I could have missed some things.

Bug#627124: nmu: vlc_1.1.9-1

2011-05-17 Thread Christophe Mutricy
Package: release.debian.org
Severity: normal
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: binnmu

Hello,

We failed to follow proper protocol for the (micro-)transition for libdvbpsi.
Sorry.
The only affected packe is vlc.

On sparc the vlc-nox already depends of libdvbpsi7 because vlc on sparc was
built much later than other arches.
On all other arches, vlc-nox depends on libdvbpsi6 and so needs to be rebuilt.

Package: gwc
Version: 0.20.07-1
Severity: minor

Hi,

When applying noise reduction to a whole song, a dialog pops up asking
if I want to skip saving the undo data. If I say "yes, do skip", the
noise reduction operation starts, but the dialog is not
hidden/destroyed, and stays on screen.

archive: cli-mono, database, debug, fonts, gnu-r, gnustep, haskell,
httpd, java, kernel, lisp, localization, ocaml, php, ruby, vcs, video,

the new section is inappropriate, otherwise please update your package
at the next upload.

Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think
the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package
so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the
override is incorrect then please file a bug against ftp.debian.org and
explain why. Please INCLUDE the list of packages as seen above, or we
won't be able to deal with your request due to missing information.

Please make sure that the subject of the bug you file follows the
following format:

Subject: override: BINARY1:section/priority, [...], BINARYX:section/priority

Include the justification for the change in the body of the mail please.

and have not received a response yet, please ignore this mail. Your bug
needs to be processed by a human and will be in due course, but until
then the installer will send these automated mails; sorry.]

This sounds like the bug that should be fixed.

As a counter example, take mplayer, which has a very broad userbase of
which not everyone wants to run jackd. Still they require libjack
installed because otherwise the binary would not be usable at all.

Therefore the right thing to do is to make sure that applications fail
gracefully in case the daaemon is not running or installed.
