Thanks for the update. I do have a comment about the last two sentences:

I'm not sure if it makes sense to mention its upstream support status,
because you might ask the question "well, why do you keep it then in
the first place?". Fact is that Debian is going to support the package
for wheezy, and the statement as written is rather confusing.

FWIW, I personally think we should not mention any of "lame",
"xvidcore", "x264" or "mplayer2". All of these packages are already in
stable, so the text as current is not exactly news.

Also, I'm a bit weary with advertising that Debian now ships with
fancy modern decoders, because I fear of trolls that ask questions
about legality, patents, etc. I've therefore avoided references
regarding that in my proposed text for libavcodec/libav.

Exactly. I've just updated the section.

BTW, the maintainer of libav is (currently) the pkg-multimedia team ;-)

I agree, we'd better to postpone the announcement until those sections

I added Flowblade - I sure hope my edit didn't mess up with your later
commit, Allesio (your lock had expired when I did it).

Great text!

One detail that I find relevant for us to mention is that recent Calf no
longer provide LADSPA plugins. That is not a "dropped package" nor is
it a "broken functionality". Main reason I find it important for us to
mention is that MLT is poorly documented, and upstream web pages lists
Calf plugins as possible filters, which easily causes confusion (it did
for me, several times!).

I suggest either adding a subsection for dropped LADSPA plugins, or
(better, I think) rename to the more generic "LADSPA plugins" and "LV2
plugins".

Does this happen with all files? If no, can you please upload your test file
somewhere? This is mostly so I can verify that the bug has been fixed before
uploading a new version.

The full build log is available from:

A list of current common problems and possible solutions is available at

About the archive rebuild: The rebuild was done on EC2 VM instances from
Amazon Web Services, using a clean, minimal and up-to-date chroot. Every
failed build was retried once to eliminate random failures. The build
was done with DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS="parallel=4", so if your packaging tries
to support this, it might be a good idea to explore whether this might
be the cause of the failure.

Dear maintainer(s),

Debian is transitioning from IJG JPEG library (src:libjpeg8) to
libjpeg-turbo implementation (src:libjpeg-turbo)[1] of libjpeg62 API
with "decode from memory buffer" interface (jpeg_mem_{src,dest}).

Your package cannot be transitioned automatically as it explicitly
build depends on specific API/ABI (libjpeg8-dev) and this build
dependency needs to be changed to libjpeg-dev. In most if not all
cases this should be sufficient to build against libjpeg-turbo.

I am in process of testing each package in question to compile against
libjpeg-turbo and I will provide a suitable patch for each package
when I will succeed.

On the other hand please note that the winter^Wfreeze is coming and
if your package is not updated in due time it might be NMUed by the
release team (or by me with the full ack of release team).

That also means that if you are OK with NMU then please respond to
this bug report and I will prepare and upload the recompiled packages
for you.

Cheers,
Ondrej

I updated the mplayer2 section and added mplayer to the dropped section (I also
slightly edited the mpv description). They all probably need some proof-reading
though.

Also, I noticed that a lot of the changes mentioned are mostly relevant to
wheezy (e.g. lame, x264, libav, xvidcore, ...), so maybe the fact that the
changes presented are not only relevant to jessie should be mentioned (the first
paragraph kinda does this, but IMO it's not very clear).

Also^2, the libav section IMO should be more about what version are we going to
release and what new changes it brings since wheezy. This can be compiled from
libav release notes [0] [1] [2], though I'll leave that to the libav maintainer
judgment. The fact that we switched from ffmpeg is, I think, pretty clear to
everyone already.

Will you send a draft to this list before that?

Package: vlc
Version: 1:2.2.0~pre3-dmo2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

x What led up to the situation?

After upgrading/updating Debian's VLC packages last week, I noticed that
VLC no
longer plays streamed videos (over HTTP), and the connection is dropped
after a
few seconds on any HD stream, which did not happen with the previous
versions
(2.1.3->2.1.5)
The specific feature that I use to access HTTP streams is under File ->
"Open
Network Stream" or by pasting the video URL from the clipboard.

x What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?

At first I thought it was an issue only with videos on YouTube (since that's
where I watch most of the streamed videos), but I've tested out HD streams
from
multiple sites/servers and the same happens.

For more details and for the log that VLC outputs during streaming (and
dropping the connection) I previously posted a thread on VideoLan Forums
(where
I didn't get any answer). Here's the thread:
https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=121661

And here's the transcript from the thread:

After I updated VLC to the latest version on the unstable repos in Debian,
I cannot watch YouTube videos anymore as they keep stuttering and loading
very slowly (this mostly happens when watching HD videos, this didn't
happen before I upgraded though), to a point where the connection drops.
HTTP streaming might be affected by this too. Here's how the log looks:

--

core debug: connection succeeded (socket = 13)

-

It keeps repeating the same messages and floods the log window, which
didn't happen before when streaming (yes, it was set to Verbosity level 2)
. Also the CPU usage is unusual, takes up 20-30% extra per CPU.
