Well, I missed one undefined routine: cairo_win32_surface_create. It is simply not in the cairo libraries that I installed via the Cygwin install program. So I have left out the wincairo device and then it all worked. Well, almost. I get warnings from pango: (process:5988): Pango-WARNING **:
