To everyone:
I found that the linux drivers for the Intel Sandy Bridge chipset
were in bad shape a year ago and it took a year's work to fix this
problem. Unfortunately Intel has the fix for the Linux v3.1 kernel
and I am only using v2.6.32-37 right now in Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS.

WAG: Adjust refresh rate to 60Hz. If 640x480 works at BIOS startup
then it should work later if the refresh isn't too high (or, I
suppose, too low, but that isn't usually the problem) for the LCD.
