Denis,

CUPS does not know if it's serving a single user on a single host or
multiple users on multiple hosts. The scheduler places incoming jobe in the
print queue and sends them off to the appropriate printer when it's ready to
accept them.

When you first posted your problem none of us thought to ask you to check
that 1) cupsd (the exeucutable daemon) was installed and b) if it had been
invoked.

Why your distribution suggests a conflict with itself is puzzling; perhaps
there are subtle differences in the specifics that were overlooked when
reading.

Regardless, as long as it works, just shrug and move on.

Glad you solved the problem,

Rich

Well, after much fussing without any progress, I used Synaptic to install
cups. Now before you say "duh", let me explain. Synaptic lists many
cup- . cups is described as the scheduler, and not installed.
But it also lists it as conflicts with cups. What sense does that make?
Anyway, no change was observed after the install. So I shut down and wrote
some notes. Booted back up and Bingo! The printer was magically present
without any hesitation. Incidentally I also upgraded a dozen or so
packages.

So what is this scheduler stuff? What is this conflicts with cups? Any
ideas on how it went away (other than operator error)?

Thanks to all those who tried to help. And apologies to those whose
reading time was taken up by this saga.
