Thanks for all the input. I finally fixed my problem.
Let me share info and how I luckily stumbled onto the solution.
Machine is a Dell G15 laptop.
I tried Ubuntu 20 and used "Driver Manager" to pull in the latest Nvidia
driver.
It worked with the external monitor via HDMI only when the Nvidia

I ran into a similar problem a few years ago. I bought a Dell desktop PC
at Goodwill. I hooked it up to my TV via an HDMI cable. It worked fine
with Windows 10. Wouldn't work with GNU/Linux. I tried Knoppix, Mint, and
probably Kubuntu. I wasn't able to get it to work with GNU/Linux.
