I also would recommend MX, & possibly even Spiral Linux. Spiral Linux
isn't as proven as MX, but they do offer a Mate version.

I really like my Kensington Expert Mouse Pro USB trackball. I bought it
used in about 2008 for ten bucks. If it ever stops working, I would be
happy to attempt repairing it. I also use an old Logitech trackball that's
almost as good as the Kensington (the Kensington is ambidextrous which
helps
I've found Knoppix to be very good at supporting old scanners & printers.

I ran into a similar problem a few years ago. I bought a Dell desktop PC
at Goodwill. I hooked it up to my TV via an HDMI cable. It worked fine
with Windows 10. Wouldn't work with GNU/Linux. I tried Knoppix, Mint, and
probably Kubuntu. I wasn't able to get it to work with GNU/Linux.
