Re: rmdir

2018-08-20 Thread Brien Dieterle
That's still too dangerous. What I do is first chown the folder to nobody
user. Then sudo to nobody.
Then I type out the full path to the folder, and use the arrow keys to move
to the beginning of the line. Then I finally type rm - rf and hit enter

Re: Write on PDFs

2018-06-05 Thread Brien Dieterle
I've used GIMP before, but I'm a maniac. Just open the PDF. Each page
will be a layer. The trick is to export as pdf again instead of "overwite
pdf". This lets you select the options "layers as pages" and also "reverse
the pages order".

This probably totally loses all the magic dust inside the PDF format, but
it works.

You might want to try checkinstall, which solves a lot of the problems of
uninstalling, etc:

Have you already replaced the hard drive with a cheap SSD? If not, I would
do that first before RAM upgrades.

Re: darktable rebooting computer

2017-11-26 Thread Brien Dieterle
What have you done to test the overheating theory? Have you at least
popped the case and directed a strong fan in there and restarted the
stress/glmark test?

Other things to try:
Bios settings. Reset to factory recommended defaults, adjust voltages,
underclock, ram timings, etc etc. Not suggesting you do these all at once-
one at a time.

Re: wired/wireless

2017-11-23 Thread Brien Dieterle
03:06.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT5362 PCI 802.11n Wireless
Network Adapter
03:0e.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Texas Instruments TSB43AB23 IEEE-1394a-2000
Controller (PHY/Link)

Do you still have the wireless in there? I would remove that firewire card
too.
When you plug the computer into the modem, do you mean you are plugging it
directly into the single port on a "cable modem", or do you mean you're
plugging it into one of several ports on the wifi "router"? If the former,
you need to make sure to power cycle the "modem" in order for it to accept
a new device (mac address)

I would just go with Debian Stable. You're already comfortable with this.
Why not? Then you'd have all the flexibility you need down the road if you
decide to do more with the box.

Re: seeking 4k curved monitor recommendation

2017-11-15 Thread Brien Dieterle
I just picked up a BenQ 27" 2560x1440 (100% sRGB). For the love of color
don't get a wide gamut display. Get a 100% sRGB Rec 709 monitor and save
yourself from most of the color management hell :-)

4k curved screens seem to be pretty rare. The only 2 I've found in a
(rather quick) search is a 40" Philips and 40" AOC. There appear to be
quite a few 3440x1440 curved monitors though, mostly 34" though they
 are pricey.

I think I bought both my 27" ASUS 2k and 4k monitors from newegg.

You probably just need to use your desktop environment (gnome, etc) and go
into network settings and change it there to a static DNS server.

Re: Network gurus

2017-11-06 Thread Brien Dieterle
Probably because you are getting the dns servers from dhcp. The best way
to fix this I'd to fix the dns servers on your router. Maybe restarting
your router will solve the problem since you are probably using the dns
server on the router.

What DNS server does it say you are using before you overwrite resolv.conf?

You have onboard video and a separate graphics card? I would remove the
graphics card and use the onboard for a while. If it doesn't crash you
know it is related to that card.
Have you already ruled out overheating by opening the case and blasting it
with a fan?

Well, those temperatures are not that hot, but that doesn't mean some
cooling wouldn't improve things.
Have you popped the case off and pointed a big fan in there and tried to
reproduce the crash yet?

Well, it might be protecting your computer but if it is too low it will
just be annoying.
You still need to run sensors and get those numbers if you haven't yet:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/15832/how-do-i-get-the-cpu-temperature

If your machine is legitimately overheating you need to address that with
fans and ventilation, etc.

Well, you're on the right track. Try to isolate whether glmark alone can
crash it, or if you need stress as well. Then try opening up your case
and point a fan in there.
Also don't forget to check the BIOS for thermal management events that
might be causing the shutdown/reboot.

Re: computer slow

2017-10-30 Thread Brien Dieterle
well, then run both stress AND glmark2 for like 20 minutes.

If that doesn't crash it, look for some other graphical programs like an
openGL game. There should be a package to install Nexuiz/Xonotic

That'll give you an excuse to play videogames for a bit.

If ONLY darktable makes your computer crash, then maybe it really does have
something to do with darktable and your GPU and openCL, etc

Re: computer slow

2017-10-30 Thread Brien Dieterle
Well, not yet ;-). If it doesn't crash, you might need to stress the
graphics card as well with one of these tools:

https://www.pcsuggest.com/gpu-benchmarking-and-stress-testing-in-linux/

So maybe kick off both stress and

glmark2 --run-forever

Re: computer slow

2017-10-30 Thread Brien Dieterle
Forget darktable for now. Did you run stress test for more than 10 seconds?

This will run a stress test for 30 minutes:

stress --cpu 8 --io 4 --vm 2 --hdd 2 --timeout 1800s

If you can get it to crash with just this stress program, then it has
nothing to do with darktable

Re: computer slow

2017-10-30 Thread Brien Dieterle
Check your bios settings for hardware monitoring and temperature limits.
You may have it set with a maximum temperature so the machine panics when
it's just warm.

Try raising this number or disabling the feature entirely

But first check your sensors by installing a temperature monitoring program

Don't buy anything unless you can confirm it has 100% linux support. The
PCI version of that card says it has linux support, but PCIe version looks
suspicious. I don't think PCIe cards will work in a PCI slot.

Just get a card from here:

https://www.thinkpenguin.com/catalog/wireless-networking-gnulinux

is the last version they will support over apt (if it works at all)

Re: Question about APT

2017-08-08 Thread Brien Dieterle
Simplex Solutions looks like it was bought by KeepSolid

Their client is now downloadable here:
https://www.vpnunlimitedapp.com/en/downloads/linux

The link itself goes here:

http://apt.keepsolid.com/debian/pool/main/v/vpn-unlimited/vpn-unlimited_4.1_amd64.deb

So maybe apt.keepsolid.com is the new apt repo? I can't tell if it should
work or not. Maybe they don't support a bona-fide repo anymore.

Re: sporadic connectivity

2017-08-08 Thread Brien Dieterle
Pretty likely it is the dongle/drivers/etc. Instead of getting a wireless
card, you might consider just getting an external wifi router and
configuring it for client mode. Then you can just plug several devices
into the router and not worry about wifi drivers at all.

Do you have to click agree on a sign in page when using guest? Try going
to a url like CNN.com and see if that brings up the captive portal sign on

Re: Monitor problem....

2017-08-03 Thread Brien Dieterle
Haha, so you had two video cards? Well don't feel dumb, I only suggested
that because it'd be something I would do, especially after moving my
computer around.

If you want I think you can go into the bios and enable that onboard video
so you can use two monitors. Although sometimes that onboard video just
won't work because the CPU lacks the integrated gpu.

I have been writing BASH scripts daily, on a pretty consistent basis, for
the last 3 years or so.

Always striving to get better, if anyone needs any scripts written, or
feels like coaching me (and my work) I would really appreciate the help!

Please let me know if I may assist you in any way.

This is for free -- no ploy to buy anything -- just trying to get better at
BASH scripting. I'm also (as of yesterday) learning Python, so any tips
you have on that too would be awesome.

Re: some pages don't load

2017-06-02 Thread Brien Dieterle
Are you sure you refreshed the modem, and not the router? (or are they a
combined unit?). It sounds like the DNS server on the router was totally
broken and either had some cached records or your computer had some cached
records. This is assuming you are using your router for your DNS server.
You could always just set your clients to use google's DNS (8.8.8.8,
8.8.4.4) if you continue to have problems. You can do this either manually
on each client or tell the router to send these to the clients via DHCP
settings.

If you use Gnome, just select some files or folders, and right-click,
choose "compress". Choose your format, 7z, zip, etc etc. You didn't
specify your desktop environment so I hope this is helpful.

Re: gray card

2017-02-21 Thread Brien Dieterle
The grey card you can buy is a known calibrated reference. There's not
much point in printing your own unless your printer and computer have
already been calibrated with a bunch of grey and other cards and
equipment. I suggest you get yourself an 18% grey hat. Then you can just
put your hat

on the things you're photographing and get the exposure right, take the hat
off (or not) and take your picture.

Re: (OT) Backup Software Suggestions

2017-01-26 Thread Brien Dieterle
Backuppc moved to github and there are regular commits, so maybe it's not
dying? The 4.0 beta branch definitely is stale though:
https://github.com/backuppc/backuppc

Yeah, it's not super fancy and the uploading isn't as efficient as it could
be for duplicate files, but it is flexible and reliable. I use it with
openvpn and cygwin/rsyncd to backup family windows machines over slow WAN.
My local fs is backed up with tar. My LAN machines are backed up with
rsync/ssh for linux and plain SMB for my wife's laptop. The web interface
is pretty darn nice IMO and the files aren't terribly obfuscated on disk.

Re: fetchmailrc syntax error

2016-12-09 Thread Brien Dieterle
Edit the hidden file in your home directory called .fetchmailrc and see
what's wrong with the syntax

This site has examples
https://www.linode.com/docs/email/clients/using-fetchmail-to-retrieve-email/

If you don't know why fetchmail is setup, and you don't have any issues
with your email, you could just rename the file.

Tried running a search on the error message but got nothing useful.

If anyone could give me a clue I would really appreciate it.

Sounds like it had a lot of writing errors. Thing is I'll not sure how to
deal with it while using NTFS

http://linux.bigresource.com/General-NTFS-marking-sectors-bad--aLwrEyk32.html

If you use ext3 or ext4 you can check for and mark bad blocks during format
with the -c option. mkfs.ext4 -c /dev/sdd1

How do I discover the device as opposed to the mount point?

Re: Bitlocker and Linux

2016-10-17 Thread Brien Dieterle
I don't see anything there about centrally managed full disk encryption for
Linux with bitlocker. There are products out there but no way a shop is
going to invest in multiplatform solution just for one person. I would
look at doing native Linux encryption (whatever the distro offers during
installation) and turn the key over to IT. That might satisfy the
insurance requirement without having a managed solution for Linux.

Re: rsync`

2016-10-10 Thread Brien Dieterle
I don't think your sdcard is even mounted. Try this:
http://www.pkill-9.com/mount-usb-micro-sd-card-linux-automount/

Also, until you are confident it is configured correctly, you should really
use -n (or --dry-run) for rsync so you don't accidentally... oh, delete
everything :-)

Re: exposure

2016-07-21 Thread Brien Dieterle
2 or more photos are required, the more photos at different exposures, the
more range is captured. Each photo only capture a certain range of values,
or details. So your EV+2 will get shadow details and your EV-2 will get
details in the bright areas, like clouds. Your EV+0 will get the best
details in your middle values. So the software helps you mix the 3 (or
more) photos together to have the most range possible--High Dynamic Range.

In the olden days you could take two photos of a landscape, one over
exposed for the clouds and a normal exposure for the land. You'd cut the
photo in half and paste the clouds onto the land-- old school HDR!

On Jul 21, 2016 8:57 PM, "Michael" wrote:

I was wondering: To do an HDR picture you need three or more photos at
different exposures. Well, I got a Nikon and it has something called D
Lighting which is (as far as I can tell) where the Nikon takes an image and
gives the image you take + and - 1 EV and then gives you an HDR image. I
don not like NOT having control of my image when it is creating the HDR
image. Anyone know of a program that will take an image and give it a plus
and minus value you want and spit the images out so that he can play with
it in LuminanceHDR? I got it. LuminanceHDR will do it. Make
three copies and adjust the EV setting in the HDR Creation window. Not
quite as quick as I was looking for but it will work.

I've been wondering: How is using more than three different exposures
beneficial? Should you have an odd number of exposures with EV 0 being the
one in the middle?

You probably have a blank line in your serverlist.txt, resulting in
$server being null:

ping .localdomain

64 bytes from localhost (::1): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.017 ms

Re: Firefox endless crashing ...

2016-05-18 Thread Brien Dieterle
Try clicking the help ? Button then troubleshooting information. Then try
the refresh Firefox button.

If that doesn't help you could rename the hidden Firefox folder in you home
directory. Might be .mozilla

Maybe you could create a new user and see if that user has issues, then you
know it is your profile or not.

Re: rsync problem

2016-05-10 Thread Brien Dieterle
Well it is formatted for Windows vfat but it is mounted RW so there was
probably an error that caused it to remount read only. I'd backup any data
you need off that drive and run
sudo umount /dev/sdd1
sudo fsck.vfat -a /dev/sdd1
to check and repair filesystem errors.

Re: 32-bit Flash?

2016-04-18 Thread Brien Dieterle
PepperFreshplayer might work; it downloads chrome and extracts the
flash plugin. I have no idea if it will download the 64bit chrome and
if that will work for 32bit FF, though.

https://wiki.debian.org/PepperFlashPlayer/Installing

Mind you, the update script broke recently, but there is a patch here:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=818540

Your other option is to just just use the normal flashplugin-nonfree
on firefox-- it is old but they still maintain security updates.

Oh is it asking you to confirm adding the ppa and hitting enter is like
yes? If so try adding a -y

You could add -r to remove them and try again.
