I have seen burning software get weird with an explicit choice in burning
medium. so if you make it think CD and not DVD it will see a DVD and say
media not valid. I have seen this in Windows and Linux software.

There's no fault here. The difference between the 4.4 and the 4.7GB is
overhead for the DVD format and index (directory) written when the
data meaningful to you is written. If it were a straight, single track
song or movie you might get more data but it's all in how and what you
count as

well don't forget you can do a dual layer dvd for 9.8 or so.

I have a Dell Inspiron 660 running Mint 17 KDE. I was trying to burn a
DVD and cannot. I get a popup shortly after I insert the DVD which
allows me to open the burner software, however is says something to the
effect that the medium is not valid. I can burn CD's but not DVD's. A
