Compiz has it's funnies but I have been using it for so long and I do like all of the effects that it allows, so I continue to use it. Glad that you were able to resolve your issues there. I've been on the Ubuntu MATE Community site for the last couple of days. A fellow there had me describe some things, and then he described some things from his installation. It's not exactly the same as what I was looking for, but it's close enough. The biggest problem I was having was that I'd open a file and start typing, only see something that is probably a search box in Caja filling up with what was supposed to go in the just opened file. It's still annoying that Caja stays on top of a just opened file, but that's less of an issue than focus.
