I would suggest you simply select the plugin in plugin section, then restart your LMS and the latest version would be available. The manual steps were only applicable because the fix wasn't implemented in an update. I've successfully updated the plugin manually and later on an automated update

Honestly, I just assumed it was something you've been trying to pinpoint and fix all this time. And if that's not the case, than yes, I agree that UI enhancements should take a back seat to a fairly crippling software bug. I'll see what logs I can produce and mail them to you.
