Just an update, for closure.
After a great deal of diagnosis, it turned out to be a faulty RAM
module. So, not a FreeNAS problem, certainly not a Slimnas one, and
not (as it now turns out) a problem with upgrading to LMS.
I reformatted my HDD (to remove any trace of anything, just in case),

Can you provide a full log from running 7.7?
Worst case you may want to remove the usr subfolder below the SlimNAS
installation folder and try the installation again.
