Did you try with Volume Normalisation turned on?
Oh my... I must have confused Smart Gain with Smart Crossfading... Which
means: no I hadn't tried volume normalisation. And if I do so I can
reproduce the distortion. I'll see what I can do.

couple of things that Material doesn't appear able to do.

If you've experienced the "failed to get token" issue with Spotty
v4.5.0, you should give v4.5.1 a try. It will hopefully work around this
limitation until I've fixed the spotty helper for an upcoming update.

After the update to 4.5 spotty now fails to load & the spotty app now
shows:
Failed to get access token
Please check Settings/Advanced/Spotty Spotify for Squeezebox in the web
interface.
Also the media scanner no longer finishes (Media scan terminated
