Thanks.

I'm not a regular enough user to see any benefit in subscriptions,
bookmarks or listening to the same item across different access methods
(I doubt my concentration could cope).

I'm only too aware that our behaviour is tracked by many organisations,
in many ways, and in a sense am not too bothered. But I still make some
efforts to keep it down a bit. :-)

Yes. The problem is that the BBC updates the opml listing dynamically,
with newest broadcast listed first. Unfortunately LMS cannot handle this
situation as it expects the listing to remain static while you're
browsing the menu.

I recall this being pointed out, somewhat late in the day some years
ago, when LMS' menu handling was being substantially re-engineered. It
was considered too late to warrant trying to make a late change for what
was considered a "rare" circumstance. That is my recollection, anyway.

Thanks for this thread. Very useful to get podcasts listed on my Rasp
Pi/Picore/LMS set up.
Listening to 99% Invisible podcasts for the first time - very
interesting.

The BBC podcasts can take a while to load each list of options and some
of them don't actually load the specific podcast.
I think for the BBC, I will mostly just subscribe to a programme via BBC
Sounds.

Anyhow - another step forwards for my listening pleasure :-)

Take care everyone,

I'm in the US, and not really familiar with the BBC Podcast, but what I
am using is the Podcast Search though the material skin. It seaches
ITunes and Gpodder. I did a search in itunes for "BBC" (not knowing what
you are looking for):

One other thing if you are not familiar with Phillippe's "Reliable"
Plugin. It greatly helps the frustrating tendency for podcasts
disconnecting

Sorry, just noticed this thread.

My view is as follows :

The BBC Sounds Plugin only offer other programmes if you asked to be
offered them (ie go to "My Recommendations" in the Plugin or go in to
the featured podcasts). You don't have to look in there if you don't
want to!
Signing in gives you lots of benefits including subscription and
bookmarks and continues listening across the different access methods
(website and app).

The BBC have strong governance processes and are very open about why
they want you to sign in.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/usingthebbc/why-we-are-asking-you-to-sign-in

We are being tracked all the time. if you have a mobile smart phone,
the tracking that is going on makes signing in to the BBC seem
incredibly trivial.
I personally am much more comfortable with the BBC tracking me than the
global for profit massive tech companies (Amazon etc)

LMS itself is recording cookies all the time and you are being tracked
by using various internet based systems on LMS anyway . Including on
mysqueezebox.com (if you sign in, probably even if you don't).

Unfortunately personalisation is the way to get the "mobile" users on
board - screen are too small to show everything (and BBC have literally
millions of programs available to play)
BBC being Govt funded need to show the public is using their service.
I agree with your point of view but in some instances no choice has been
offered so I reserve some email addresses to register for such services.

of a service.

The good thing about LMS - you have choice. BBCiPLayer, BBCiPlayerExtra

Well apparently they need to have the metadata to justify all the money
they have/are spending on "Sounds", and because everybody else does it
:)

One can complain and rail against it (thousands have) but the Beeb just
ignores all complaints.

One either accepts it, or doesn't, it's the individual's choice

If you use a browser or app with BBC Sounds or via Radioplayer or
podcasts via a 3rd party podcast player - there are loads of other
cookies being stored so in theory the LMS plugin should have minimal
tracking.

Thanks. I hadn't twigged that iPlayerExtra was able to play 'podcasts'.
That's (for me) a problem with labels - i tend to assume they indicate

If you are interested in podcasts other than from the BBC, search for
podcasts in your browser. Add a subject of interest, thus: "podcasts
classical music RSS feed", "podcasts tropical plants RSS feed", etc. You
are looking for the RSS feed to paste into LMS Podcasts tab in Server
Settings.

Or you can visit a website of a podcast you may have read about in a
newspaper or in newsletter (The Guardian has a weekly podcasts email).
For example, a popular podcast in the U.S. is 99% Invisible
(99percentinvisible.org). From the home page, look for a clue on how to
subscribe to the podcast. I found it by clicking the Subscribe drop-down
menu. One of the menu items is "Podcast RSS." I copied the URL
(http://feeds.99percentinvisible.org/99percentinvisible) and pasted that
into the "Add a New Feed" box on the podcast plugin in Settings and
clicked the Apply button on the lower-right of the screen to save it.
Return to the LMS Home page and under My Apps click on Podcasts and you
will see "99% Invisible" listed. Click on that to see a list of
podcasts, sorted by latest (Nov. 17, 2020, "In The Unlikely Event").

Hope this is helpful.

No.
BBCiPlayer has programs that only last 7 days.

BBCiPlayerExtra accesses *all* the programs BBC has on their website.
Some programs are only kept for 30 days, some for much longer - There
are Desert Island disks from decades ago and many series of some
programs (e.g. Old Harry's Game) and a few weeks worht of Book of the
Week and Book at Bedtime.

Many podcasts are "programs" that were not broadcast (although some are
broadscasts) - they may be long in duration which is why a podcast
player which can remember position is useful

If you paste the following URL into the settings page you will have
access to a hierarchical list of BBC Podcasts: -
http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts.opml-

But it's not that convenient, after a while, because the ordering
changes as new podcasts are released.

But you can paste individual URLs of podcasts that you like:

>From Our Own Correspondent:
BBC Inside Science: -http://podcasts.files.bbci.co.uk/b036f7w2.rss-

Where did I get these ? From the, rather small, *RSS* link that each
podcast website provides.
Look on here,
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b036f7w2/episodes/downloads, for
example, it's somewhere in the top right hand part of the web site.

Or do as @slartibartfast suggests.

*RSS* podcast feeds is what you're looking for, in general. I hope this
gives sufficient clue.

I'd also quite like to know how to use the podcast plugin for BBC
programmes, just so I get a bit more of a grip on how things work.

My understanding was that the files iplayerExtra plays disappear quite
quickly (after 3 or 4 weeks at mots) whereas podcasts don't. Is that
not true?

Podcasts are just like "Listen Again" programs.

If you BBC specific stuff you can find them either with BBC iPlayerExtra
plugin or the BBC Sounds plugin (you need to register with BBC Sounds
web site). BBC Sounds will probably be better as it can remember where
you stopped.

I have never, ever, played a podcast from anywhere. I can see that I
can download stuff from the BBC website, but what I thought I should be
able to do was see a list of stuff in LMS and select and play from
there.

I have the podcast plugin and settings page, but no idea what to put in
it for a set of BBC programmes.

I've searched, but everything I've found so far assumes basic knowledge
that I simply don't have. Can someone give me a clue?
